  1. Even Gainey said he struggled when he first came. And he definitely knows what positional hockey is about. It could've been Julien's fault... Once Bob took over behind the bench, he started to improve.
He played exactly the same the first half as the second half (only the puck went in the net a few times in teh second half).
  2. Theo did carry carry that team to the playoffs and upset the Bruins. Yes he did do that single handidly. That team was garbage. Theo was that team the entire year. Even if you don't think so, everyone in the league that year thought so.

Theo is worthless now and i don't even really like him, but Huet NEVER had a run like Theo did that year.

That wasn't all Theo, that was the team. We were constantly outshot that year, but the forwards and D managed to keep all the shots from the outside and let him see them. That team didn't have much going for it, but they did make sure that Jose got shots he could handle.
  3. What is funny in that ?? He is not faster both are not very fast, but he is well positionned,

handle the stick very well creates space and play a very good 2 waysand he has a winning attitude.

    Wich Bonk never had.

I sense some irony on your last 3 post revin5.

-Patrick Stefan a heartless no hitting no scoring no attitude guy, you must be joking.

-Tom Poti at defense? He learned to make blind pass and blurs at Patrice Brisebois school.

-Radek Bonk was a complete disaster the first year in Montreal playing with an injury ans skating like he pooed

in his jackstrap. He gave a good run this year to stay in the league and get another contract.

Are you joking around because i am not sure at all if you're not a Corvina clone or something :P

Not joking at all and no irony at all. Stefan can fill Bonk's role but with a bit more speed, Poti can fill Souray's role (not PP, but 5 in 5) with a bit more speed and more shot blocking, and Radek Bonk did everything that was needed of him the first year he was here (he was a big shutdown center, he wasn't here to score goals). What's a Corvina clone mean?
  4. You're probably in the minority on that issue. Personally, I thought Bonk wasn't as bad as many made him out to be, but he definitely played much better this past year.
Know of any other players that can play the same positional style as Bonk, roughly the same size, but a little faster? I can't think of any.
  5. I think this is what I love best... when I have no IDEA of who your talking about and I go search for them and get surprised! :) thanks
I have no IDEA what to say. Is it Poti or Stefan that you weren't aware of?

BTW what stefan is it? Patrick? 11 pts in 41 games?

Poti I like... but this stefan unless Gainey and Crabo Know him well and the "untapped scoring potential" is Untapped then yeah

Don't really want any scoring out of him. To make it clear, I though Bonk was amazing the first year he played here.
  6. Latendresse-Koivu-Ryder

    Higgins-Plekanec-Kostitsyn

    Lahti-Stefan-Kovalev

    Samsonov-Lapierre-Begin

    Markov-Komisarek

    Streit-Poti

5 and 6 will be chosen at training camp.

Out of all the UFAs that are available I chose Stefan and Poti because I think they fill out needs best out of what is available (and are both underrated so they shouldn't hurt us too badly on the money side of things). Stefan has a good combination of speed and size, also plays well defensively and could fill the role that Bonk is vacating. Poti blocks shots and is mobile, he should be an upgrade from Souray (they both make defensive errors, but Poti won't be taken for a pylon).

And yeah, I have Begin playing off-wing so that Samsonov can play with Lappy and him. Gainey might be able to get rid of him over the summer, but he might not, so I'm not going to count him out quite yet. His agent will probably start whining and we end up with this instead:

    Latendresse-Koivu-Ryder

    Samsonov-Plekanec-Kostitsyn

    Higgins-Stefan-Kovalev

    Lahti-Lapierre-Begin

So no matter what Begin will be playing the off-wing as no one else we have should be on the fourth line and plays RW. Lahti apparently only plays LW so it would seem to be easier to switch Begin since he's played just about everywhere anyways.

So I guess the main question is.. what do you think of the two UFAs (Stefan and Poti)?

  7. Really, Preising and Corvo both had plus minus' better then the Habs team combined. They are not liabilities.
you've never seen them play in their own end I take it.

You shouldn't compare a Great D in the Sens and the Habs. There is no comparison. 105 points, Stanley cup bound. The Habs are golfing and had a 10th place finish.
We're not about to sign the top two D in the league so we can't model our defensive corps after Anaheim and no other team has a defensive corps worth replicating. If we're going to get better than we have to look at what everyone else has. We add a defensive defensemen who can block a lot of shots and suddenly our D will look pretty good.

The Sabres are a tough and gritty team. Obviously not tough or big enough to match the Sens but that'a why they were the best all year. Peters had more fights then the entire Habs team.
Tough and gritty? Sabres? The Islanders are tough and gritty... The Sabres are like ballerinas in comparison. They are a team I would consider the exact opposite of tough and gritty. That's why Peters took 17 fighting majors this season, making sure that they got to play their game and not someone elses. I really like the Sabres, but you've got to be kidding yourself if you can call them either of those two words. They play a game based on speed. Not size, nor toughness. Just speed. Well, playmaking as well... but the speed is what gives them the opening for those crossice passes. Now why did the Sabres lose? You say it was becuase they weren't big or tough enough... I'm going to blame it on the D. Sens D was solid positionally so the Sabres couldn't take advantage too much with their speed (and their forwards are committed to coming back to help) and the Sabres D wasn't. Sabres had Lydman who blocked a hell of a lot of shots but other than that their D were making too many mistakes. That and the Sabres powerplay has been horrible all year. How many shorthanded Sens chances did we see compared to Sabres PP chances? It wasn't a terribly impressive ratio for the Sabres. So yeah, if the Sabres had been bigger and tougher they could have muscled past those Senator defensemen... but they also wouldn't be fast enough to capitalize on any chances. They lost because their D wasn't good enough.

Except for the first game in the series, every game was a low-scoring one-goal difference affair. I guess you would say that the Senators are just too big and tough up front... but we both know that they are speed team just like the Sabres, right? It's all in the D.

  8. The Habs need size, grit and hard working players. The formula has been the same for decades, 2 offensive lines, checking grinding line, and a energy tough guy line. All the top teams are built like this or very similar.
Except the Sabres. The reason they lost to the Sens? Defense. Redden, Volchenkov, Phillips, Meszaros. It has a lot to do with the fact that any shot that goes near Volchenkov bounces off of him. Corvo and Preissing are liabilities defensively, so they don't really count in that. The team I want to see will be built like the Sabres offensively and the Senators defensively. Sounds tough, but it really isn't all that hard.

Sabres offense: built on speed and non-stop attack. Every line can score, so the other team can't play around that one top line. I've already shown some line combinations that would make it possible to do this here.

Send defense: positional play and not letting opponents get clear shots.

Redden: superb defensively and offensively. (Markov)

Volchenkov: hits alot and hard, blocks any shot that goes near him.

    Phillips: plays superb defensive positioning.

    Meszaros: positioning.

Corvo: he's basically a point shot and that's it. (Souray)

    Preissing: classic offensive-defensemen. (Streit)

    Schubert: utility man D/W. (Dandenault)

We've still got Komi and Bouillon. but they don't match up against any of those players. I like Bouillon, but he doesn't play a sound enough game to match up to even Meszaros (I think he can, but he didn't this year, if he could bouncec back, maybe). Komi is a half-and-half version of Phillips and Meszaros. His positional play was far better this year than the last, and he hit everything he saw. He also blocked alot of shots, but not nearly close to Volchenkov. We don't know enough about Jorges to even classify him, but we must have someone in our organization (Jorges, or Cote, or O'Byrne, or Emelin, or Jancevski) who can step into the role that Meszaros is playing (hopefully). After that, we need to get rid of Bouillon and pick up 1 of either Tom Poti or (performance enhancing drug-abuser)Sean Hill. Neither of them can fill the shoes of Volchenkov, but both will block a lot of shots so it could be possible to create a 'volchenkov effect' by having similar amount of blocked shots on the team, just not concentrated on one wall named Anton. Of course, it's going to hurt a bit if we can't get both Markov and Souray back.

  9. Walker is NOT a 4th liner...neither is Johnson.

Why would you pay a guy what these guys will earn to play on the 4th line??????

Walker can put up 60 points a year, plays with grit, can hold his own in a fight, is strong on the puck and a solid 2 way player.

<sarcasm>Yeah, let's put him on the 4th line so he can get 6-9 minutes a game. </sarcasm>

Walker is the perfect compliment to Pleks and another young LW on our 3rd line...

I agree that he is an upgrade over Johnson and you wouldn't want both on the team at the same time IMHO.

Roll four lines. 4th is defensive line which lines up against opponents top offensive line... goes like this:

    Habs vs Whoever

    4th 1st

    1st 3rd

    2nd 2nd

    3rd 4th

Here's a sample of what could have been done with the lineup we had at the start of this year (I made an exception for Lapierre):

    1st Samsonov-Koivu-Ryder

    2nd Higgins-Plekanec-Perezhogin

    3rd Latendresse-Lapierre-Kovalev

    4th Begin-Bonk-Johnson

4th plays the role that the 3rd (Perez-Bonk-Johnson) played this year, and the rest of the lines just go 40 secs one after another (it doesn't even matter which one you want to call the first line, the opponent can call whichever one it matches it's checking line against that), with different combinations for special teams. Now the reason for Walker in particular... what makes a good checking line isn't pure defense otherwise Garth Murray would be playing against the top line every night. A good checking line has to be able to play 2 ways. It has to play perfect positional hockey (like Bonk and Johnson... and Bulis... also Pleks) and be able to convert on the opportunities created by their defense. That way they make the offensive line work in their defensive zone, wearing them out as well as keeping the puck away from out net.

*actually I don't like this combination at all... I wouldn't want to see Ryder and Samsonov play on the same line... they are both floaters (unless next years Ryder is the Ryder we saw in the last game... in that case he's good for 60 goals no matter who he plays with) so switch Ryder and Perez.

Why not use that cap money and go gunning for a solid 1st or 2nd Line player, and promote a hard working player who had a good season to the 2nd line? Instead of trying to find the "bargains" on the market?
Did you forget we have to sign our D as well?
  10. You know what, if the Habs had 3 # 2 lines next year, and 1 shut-down/energy line, then I would think that was dandy.

I'd be surprised if we end up getting a quality A-1 center via trade this summer. I don't think that Gainey wants to mortgage the future quite yet.

    Higgins-Plecks-Kostitsyn

    Ryder - Koivu - Latendress

Samsonov - Grabovsky - Kovalev (don't think those two are heading anywhere unless we get junk back)

    Begin - Chippchura -Johnson

No problem with those players, but Samsonov and Kovalev cannot be put on the same line.

    Higgins-Plecks-Kostitsyn

    Samsonov-Koivu-Ryder

    Latendresse-Grabovsky-Kovalev

    Begin-Chipchura-Lapierre

... I just think Lapierre brings more to the game than Johnson does. He plays exactly the same game as Jan Bulis except not as many highlight reel crossbars. I'd be happier with Bulis back.

I'm just looking at that fourth line again... I really hope that's what we line up with next year.

  11. I want Walker to give us the best fourth line in the league. 3 offensive lines and one great checking line. If Gainey can manage to trade Samsonov, sure why not, but a buyout is a waste. It'd be better to clean the slate with Samsonov and give him a chance with the best players we have available. He'll push himself.

  12. As someone mentioned already, I'd like to see a line of Sammy-Koivu-#### next year. Samsonov never got a chance to play with Koivu and I think they would compliment each other well.
Kostitsyn would be what makes it a line though. Samy-Koivu would work well together, but Kostitsyn is the only right winger we have who will go the net (plus he has the skill and speed to keep up with the other two). Kovalev is a perimeter player, like Samsonov, and Ryder sets up in the slot. The only other option to make those two work together would be to move Lats back to RW, but that would force Kostitsyn to play off-wing so it's not really viable.
  13. You gotta capitalize on your opportunities man.

If you're gonna sign Walker, you may as well use him to take Samsonov's spot on the roster.

If you're gonna let Souray go, you may as well use the money on a bigger name than Zubrus/Walker.

And that D corpse would be awful. The bottom 4 (+ Bouillon makes 5) is just abysmal. If you can replace Cote with a good UFA then you've gotta jump on the opportunity.

I see Walker as an upgrade for Johnson, who I always thought would have been best used on the fourth line. Samsonov still has a year, and rather than give up on him and pay a penalty for doing so, we should give him a chance. He played well at times this season, but was punished even after doing so. Giving him another shot, a legit one, will also send a message to Kovalev that this is a team and that anytime Carbo does anything to him, it isn't because he isn't part of the team, it's because he's letting his team down. If that's done, it'll also give the players more respect for their coach, making his job much easier.

As for the D, they aren't as bad as they seem. I firmly believe that Streit will be even better next year than he was this year, and the increased speed of the D will more than make up for Souray's physical presence. Not filling up to the cap means that next year, Montreal can make an impact trade or even two at the deadline. I would of course take Timmonen, but he's not going to leave Nashville, not a chance in hell. None of the other free agents are worth the while and Souray would probably break the bank to keep.

  14. I've been high on Antropov for awhile. He's a big, solid, two-way player to replace Johnson but without his negative of only playing right wing. I think this will be the big year for Perezhogin, and as such we can't pick up anyone who will demand a place that Perez could have. Compete with him? Sure, but not require it.

    Perez+-Koivu-Ryder

    Higgins-Pleks-Kosty

    Latendresse+-Lapierre-Kovalev

    Begin-(BONK)-Antropov+

The ones with + are interchangeable depending on play.

  15. In a recent interview in the Canadiens magazine.

Komisarek was quoted as saying something along the lines of since Markov's english has improved he nevr shut's up on the bench or on the ice. So if he was ready for a leadership role that would be fine with me.

that was my initial thought as well... apparently he's very vocal on the ice, but not much so anywhere else. Let's give him the C.
