Agreed, likely too high for the Habs to be able to trade up high enough to get another pick to grab him. I am thinking if you could get another pick at say 15 then you could grab someone like a Liam Greentree perhaps.

I just hope the Habs can get an impact forward at 5.

Getting two picks in the top 12-15 would be ideal. Would probably allow us a SLIGHT chance to get one of the following combos:

    -Helenius/ Eiserman or Iginla

    -Parekh Eiserman or Iginla

ideal situation is we win the lottery AND trade up to the 10-12 pick range. If are lucky enough to win the lottery, I think we’d be one year away from having the pieces not only to be a playoff team, but two years away from being a legit contender.

This draft is crucial, can’t have a KK type Fxck up. There are some seriously good forward prospects this year, and if we can get the right guy it make make up for passing on Leonard last year. I would have preferred taking Leonard last year and Parekh this year.

Irrespective of the draft, we need at least two forwards in addition to a healthy Dach to make meaningful progress next year. I doubt if there is anyone we draft that makes a huge difference next year. That’s why as much as I’d like us to move our Winnipeg pick and young D and/or other picks, to get a higher first round pick, I think Hughes will probably move the first pick in another Dach/Newhook type deal.

Different time, when a grad student working part-time could afford a standing-room ticket. I would have driven a bus through the doors to see that game, though. Nothing was going to stop me.

As cherished as that memory is - I can still see Roy looking right at us and raising the Cup, roaring in triumph - I was also there for Game 2 of that series. The McSorely stick/Desjardins game. No single moment has ever been more ecstatic for me as a hockey fan than to be in the building when Desjardins blasted it past Hrudey to tie it up with a minute left. It was INSANE.

I was also a university student during the 93 cup run. I was doing an internship during the spring/sunmer and didn’t get off until game time. Missed the first period of game 1 because of the time it took to get home. For game two, Instead of going home and missing part of the game, I went to the gym at work and watched the game 2 while working out. It was a marathon workout session with the OT. I left work early for game 5, and got a lot flack at work for leaving early to watch a hockey game!!! It was definitely worth it. I still remember Roy’s awkward “going to Disneyland” plug, that seemed to be common for MVP’s those days. Haven’t seen anyone do that in a long time.

PLD for sure, but only if the asking price is reasonable. He would be a great 3rd line center for the Habs and could fill-in for Suzuki or Dach any time they may be injured.

Zegras is probably too costly for my liking

And using $8.5m of your cap (would also be the highest paid player)( for a third line centre isn’t costly?? We need to boast the second line, and add more scoring. Don’t necessarily need a centre as the priority. If we do get a centr it’s someone go can be a 1b type of second line centre and then Dach can play the wing.

those two aren’t the only two options. PLD is with his third team and has yet to have a good year where he was a consistently good player for the ENTIRE season.

It's very interesting to note that there are two potentially high-impact, relatively young C who will likely be available on the market this summer: Dubois and Zegras.

Of the two, whom would you rather acquire? Zegras is younger and a better contract, we know that. But then again you could probably get Dubois for far less valuable assets in return because of the salary. 🤷‍♂️

(I suspect HuGo will acquire neither, and will instead surprise us. But who knows).

$8.5m for 7 years for a guy who doesn’t show up in more games than he does? No thanks. If he wasn’t French there wouldn’t Ben be a discussion about trading for him.

How is the St. Louis trade or all those other names relevant to this?  There is always some uncertainty/risk when trading a player who hasn't fully developed yet. There is no reward without some risk.

I just think the trade put forth by GHT was the most interesting trade proposal I have seen yet. Most of the ones I have seen usually involve Montreal getting far more than they are giving up. This was a major trade proposal that could actually work for both teams involved.

I’m just going by the tugboats for battleship comment. What reason is there to trade Caufield for Zegras, other than size? Only reason Caufield was draft as low as he was his is his size. St. Louis never really got a chance in Calgary because of his size. I’m pretty sure they regretted that when Tampa beat them in the finals!

We need to add more scoring. You don’t do that by trading away the guy who will probably be leading your team in goals for the next 5 years.

  6. 8 hours ago, Habs Fan in Edmonton said:

It's a lot more than Caufield for Zegras.  If you break this trade down into 2 components.

    a)  Caulfield for Zegras

    b)  Mailloux and Winnipeg's pick for the #3 pick

I think you would do part b) all day long.   But you would probably not do part a)

Overall I think it's a fair deal. I know everyone on this board would like to give up a couple tugboats for a battleship but that's not how it works.

Sure if you know you are actually giving up a tugboat, and are actually getting a battleship.

how would have a Martin St Louis for Montreal’s #7 overall pick have worked out at the 2001, before St Louis had his big breakout?

Small tugboat St Louis to Montreal, so Tamp could draft the potential battleship  Komisarik (or players drafted after him like Rutto, Sjost9rm, Hanif’s, or Hemsky)? I’m sure Tampa’s happy they didn’t trade their tugboat for a potential battleship!

Depends on how HuGo evaluate all the pieces of the proposed trade ... you don't get a guaranteed Top 5 pick and a former 9th overall pick without giving up someone/thing that ***MAY*** end up being a better player than what you receive ... it is the nature of a big trade.

I didn’t notice that you included the ducks’s top 5 pick - high isn’t as big of an overpay. I’d still be hesitant in trading a guy who still looks to be at least a future 40 goal scorer AND has shown signs of becoming a more complete player, for a guy who was drafted higher, but may not be the better player.

I think a deal like this could come back to haunt us like the Leclair/Desjardins deal did.

I want Roy to win as well.

The “incident” did break my heart and I was angry at all sides, including Roy. I let that go when his number was raised.

I will never forget 1986 - Roy was beyond incredible and 1993 wasn’t far off. I’m a fan for life

I’ve got the Habs Roy “the wink” socks😀

I'm not rooting for Roy. While he was a superb player for the Habs, ultimately he put himself ahead of the team and left. It wasn't all him, but the decision was his. Had he stayed, we might have won another Cup.

I understand the situation, so I'm not holding a grudge, but neither am I going to root for him.

No. It was up to Ronald Corey and Houle being idiots and choosing the drunk Tremblay - who had an issue with Roy from the time he was a rookie.
Roy actually did try and stay after he cooled down.

After my  Go Leafs Go over the Bruins, here is another very unpopular opinion of mine.

Out of these two options, which one would you pick ?

    A)  Habs win the Cup in 2028. Until then, Oilers, Jets and Canucks all win a Cup as well.

    B)  Habs win the Cup in 2028. In the meantime, any USA based teams win all the Cups until 2028.

    I pick  A)  all day.

    Solid B.

Cant say i ever considered it, would always pull for Canadian teams, aside from Leafs (which havent threatened forever anyways).

    Go Bruins!:1vomit:

I’m rooting for the two most u likely teams, and also for Roy. Otherwise, don’t care for either of those franchises.

have plenty of reasons to not root for the favourites and we’ll, basically every other team😁 Can’t root for Kreider, the Canes, oilers (no too many oilers fan who would be rubbing it in for years and I want the Habs to be the last ad next CDN team to win). Same logic with Canucks and jets. I also want the jets to get knocked out early, so our pick is higher! Leafs - hell no!  Ditto with Bruins! Don’t any MB to get a cup with Kings. Too many players pick Florida teams, Dallas and Vegas for the weather and tax advantage - so screw them all! Don’t mind Avs, but they should have taken Allen and given us a third, so screw them! Washington is hopeless and not really a playoff team anyways.

Trade Cary Price's contract, one of the defense in the logjam, and maybe a draft pick to Utah for future considerations and use the new found cap room to get Jake Guentzal.

I also wonder if the St Louis/Lecavalier factor to get Stamkos to come to Montreal for the right price if Tampa doesn't work out something.

No way we could afford Stamkos without a major overpay on $ and term. Tampa can pay him a lot less than us because of the tax advantage.  So even with Marty/Cousin Vinny here, I can’t see Stamkos coming over on a contract that would make sense for us.

I also think we are a year away from when it makes sense to sign a major UFA, and I think we’d want someone younger than Stamkos - We are probably 2-3 years away from being able to become a legit contender.  It’s too soon to get a guy Stamkos age.

That pretty much sums up how I feel. Not the 1st time I have cheered for Boston in the playoffs and as long as they keep playing the Leafs in the playoffs, it won't be the last time.  Doesn't feel weird at all.

There was a time when I wouldn’t hesitate to cheer for the leafs over the bruins - hated when they started beating us with the Moog-Neely-Bourque teams, and even more so with the Chara (nearly decapitated MaxPac), Lucic (still remembering him taking down Komisarik from behind in a playoff series - he’d probably win in a fair fight anyway, which made it even worse), I also loathe Jack Edwards (glad he is done this year), even more then any of the pro-Leaf TSN/sportsnet/hockey night in Canada turds.  If the bruins hadn’t won the year Chara tried to murder Maxpac, I’d probably be rooting for the leafs, so Boston could continue I. Its misery. But that long steak is already over, so I guess id rather have those turds win over the leafs.

Playoffs starting tonight…difficult to choose between Toronto and Boston because I want them both to lose.

Still a leaf loss in the first round would be sweet.

This pic is fan votes about series winners:

Man choosing who to win in this series is like deciding whether you’d rather have cancer or a brain tumour! That said, as much as I hate the bruins, I don’t want to ever see the leafs win anything other than the longest streak without a cup award!

You are reaching way back for Locke example. Is zero reason Not relevant to drafting a WHL sniper in 2024 is it. Given are 1,000 other top prospects who flopped, we all know is always bit of a crap shoot with high-school kids.

And i would prefer to see them go bit more risky for offense upside, than a solid 2 way sure fire NHLer.

Like a more offensive Demidov or Catton.

(like: i preferred Jagger Firkus (63gms 61goals 126pts this year) vs a Owen Beck)

Not sure if I’d want Catton at #5 when there will be at least three other forwards, or two other Right Dmen I’d  want over him.

Another statistical tidbit: only five Habs regulars with a positive +/- rating:

    image.png

    Savard/Evans were next at -1.

Matheson and Gallagher ended the year tied at -24.

So three  guys of these guys never really have the puck -and are usually chasing the play, but hey they have positive +/- ratings. I’ll take Matheson’a negative rating!

At least he isn't drafting a dead player.

In the 1995 Las Vegas Posse dispersal draft, the Ottawa Rough Riders selected defensive end Derrell Robertson in the fifth round, only to discover that he had passed away in a car crash roughly five months earlier ... a year later, the Montreal Alouettes selected defensive end James Eggink in the fifth round of the Canadian college draft in 1996; after the draft a Concordia University football coach noticed Eggink's selection and called the Montreal Alouettes to inform them that Eggink had passed away from cancer a number of months prior.

Florida picked Guy Lafleur in the expansion draft, and apologized to Pierre page, becuase they didn’t actually want anyone from the Nordiques.

Lias Andersson was injured and missed a lot of the second half of the season.  Josh Anderson finished 2022-23 strong, so when he struggled to start the year, they were going to give him time to work out of the slump.  By the time they would have made such a switch, Lias was injured, and then by the time he came back, he needed time to get to game speed again after the long injury.

So when would the move have been made?

I would have even preferred we brought him up the last few weeks to at least see what he could do at the deadline. Even if it was in Ylonen’s (spit (another useless player this year).

    RANDOM THOUGHT:

If David Savard were willing to sign a 3-yr extension this summer for $2.25 AAV with 25/26 20-team, 26/27 10-team NTC and 27/28 5-team NTC would you do it?

Makes him (hopefully) the 35-yr-old, 3rd pairing, veteran RHD to support Reinbacher and Mailloux the season after next ... AAV still tradeable.

No. If trade him no later than the next trade deadline, unless we are in a playoff hunt next year and he is a main cog. Either way, he should be gone at the end of next year, unless it was for a salary no higher than $1.5m for a 1 yr term.

  20. 4 hours ago, The Chicoutimi Cucumber said:

I'm pretty sure he will stop getting a pass next season. MSL may also have been aware that his own attempts to improve Anderson contributed to getting him off track.  If your own meddling results in a player regressing, then you probably are going to give him some leeway. It also helps if you have a dearth of talent at W anyway. It's not as though Josh's ice time came at the expense of some elite prospect we're trying to develop.

But next year will be a new page, and JA had better pull an Armia and come back with his A game.

And I agree with you that Josh Anderson's A-game - while limited - has a lot of value. That player hits, is physical, grinds along the board, carves guys up, drives the net relentlessly with alarming speed and power, and scores 20 goals. I'd love to get him back.

Frankly, I would have like to have seen Lias Andersson and had the two of them trade spots during the year.

I feel sorry for Dubas ... he is between a rock and a hard place ... an aging roster of stars ... just out of the wild card ... ownership seemingly not open to a rebuild ... not a lot of roster flexibility in so much as they have 6 players with NMCs and 4 with M-NTCs ... Pens do have $12.7M in cap space (14 players signed).

Are you kidding me?  I agree with PK - not sure what Dubas is getting paid $7m for???

You dont think Hughes wants a young NHLer; like Newhook-Dach and not another prospect?

If we could move up to around 8 with sweeteners with the jets pick, AND win the lottery, it would be something to get Celebrini and Iginla.

  23. 1 hour ago, Habs Fan in Edmonton said:

That is true, I was just thinking that this year some teams might not perceive a big difference between drafting 3rd and 6th if the sweetener was good enough.

I’m think it depends on who teams drafting 2 to 4 want. If seen ratings that have Helenius and Parekh in the 4 to 5 position, and as low as 15-16. Similarly,  Eiserman and Iginla have been as high as 6-7 and as low as 16-17. If a team picking 2-3, and are really set on Iginla, maybe they trade down. But teams picking in the 2-3 slot that want a guy like Demidov that most ratings have in the 2-3 slot, aren’t going to trade down.
