The D is underrated (as a work in progress) because of the lack of a marquee name, i.e., a top-10 pick that commentators can focus on. But the Hughes era has been defined so far by wave after wave of defensive prospects coming in and looking good. Meanwhile, Reinbacher, Hutson and Mailloux are waiting in the wings. So, yes. It’s going to be an elite D corps.

The projection that the Habs will peak at “pretty good” is nevertheless reasonable given the lack of impact FWs. That being said, would this be the prognosis if Dach and Newhook had been healthy and had nice, developmentally progressive seasons in the way that Slaf has?

So frustrating to have promising players sidelined for months.

I think it’s still too early to say that we will even have a real good D, let alone elite. Never know with young players. I’m really hopeful about Hutson, unsure if Reinbacher will just be a second pairing guy and have heard Mailloux described as potential 2nd pairing to 7th dman. Just too early.

i remember when Kurvers first came up the talk was Habs have another college dman that is even better than Chelios.

I didn't put it in the trade proposal thread but here because the Habs may pick up that good 'ol 35 y/o if they trade Monahan and need a plug for the 4th line.

but (and most probably) the Habs would not pick up Bobino if they did not pick up Ruzicka. So, maybe Bobino would fit with another team than the Canadiens who struck out on Ruzicka... and that is why it is in this league-wide thread.

:tumbleweed: (that is Bobino tumbling by the Habs)

If the trade Monohan, they may take an expiring bad contact back - which should further increase Monohan’s value.

That's the level of effort coming off of back to back blowout losses?!  Sad.

Is it effort, or we are finding out that contrary to the belief of some, we ar not close to a playoff team yet, and won’t be until the D has a chance to develop and are healthy AND we add more talent up front.

What do you think is a fair trade here? Keep in mind Savard also has another year at 3.5M

If you are moving Savard on his own, minimum ask is a 2nd. If you have to take Ceci back, a 1st. Savard at $3.5m is better than Ceci for another year for them.

I like the EDM to MTl trade rumour I saw on several sites Savard and a 5th to EdM for Ceci, Borgault and  a 2nd.Thought's?

100% agree. That’s also why I wouldn’t want to move him unless someone is really making a godfather offer.

I hadn't seen that one. Obviously the Oilers would need to see Savard as a definite upgrade over Ceci since they both have 1 year remaining at close to the same cap hit.  Bourgault hasn't done much in the AHL, seems to have regressed. A late 2nd is OK.

If I could get a 1st instead of Bourgault and a 2nd I would be more excited about it. Of course we would have to take on Ceci to balance contracts. I can see the Oilers wanting Savard as defense is what they need.  Adding Perry and Savard  provide a lot of grit for a playoff run.

I’d want more than that to take on Ceci. The guy is a human pylon. Wouldn’t be opposed to taking him to make the cap hits work, but I’d want a lot more to take on a pylon for another year.

I really don't see a trade happening given that both teams are in rebuild mode although the Flyers seem to have taken a definite step forward this year. I don't think that Frost is a guy that Hughes covets, had a decent year last year with 19 goals but he is going on 25 so maybe that is his peak. I don't think Arber is going anywhere, just included the article as something to talk about.

Well, if Philly wants Wifi bad enough, I suppose I could be talked into moving him for Michkov😁

He might be young and have good qualities but still I'd avoid him.

Like it says in the vid, he isn't explosive, dynamic, or big.  i.e. that doesn't sound like he's fast = not a fit for the Habs.

Do the Habs suck at scoring because nobody can pass so they need another really good passer?  Or, do they desperately need more shooters?

Plus, how is really different than anyone currently in the Habs system?  Can anyone say for certain that he's leaps and bounds better than Roy or Beck?  No.  How about Newhook?  Draft him and the Newhook trade instantly becomes a dumb mistake.

If I had a pick that came before Lindstrom was taken, I'd take him over Eiserman, Helenius, and the Russian.  Why? He's 6'3" and he's already 215lbs.  How big do you think he will get?  He'll be 235+ lbs in 3-5 yrs.  He'll be a monster like Anderson.

Gee, according to the peanut gallery I'm such a big dummy for wanting the Habs to have 5 F's that are 6'3" 220+lbs.  i.e. Slaf, Dach, Andy, Florian, Lindstrom.

Besides, most scouts have Lindstrom ranked higher than Helenius anyway.

Either way, put me down for avoiding BPA Kostitsyn over Getzlaff v2.0.

I’d like to trade away our big bad Anderson, for a consistent producer. If he’s another Anderson - a guy who always leaves you wanting something more than he has given - IMO wanting a guy for the size fetish that has led to far too many mistakes - he would be a solid hard pass for me if other more consistent producers are available - regardless of their size.

Of that list on the previous page, only Scherbak, Juulsen and Poehling were first-rounders, and Juulsen was injured before we could really see his ultimate potential. The other two, I personally doubt whether they would have developed even in a better environment.

The others were late picks which have a low probability of becoming NHL regulars anyway.

What about how KK was handled. He was not only the wrong pick - but handled badly. Not sure what was dumber:

    1) Drafting KK over Hughes and Tkachuk

    2) playing KK in the NHL as the youngest player in the league as a scrawny 18 year old.

    3) trading a 1st and 2nd for Dvorak instead of keeping the picks for losing KK to the Canes.

I don't think anyone thinks he can be the next Weber (!!). Weber was one of the top 20 defencemen of his era. He's not going to be that.

To my mind, the future for Wifi is one of the following:

    1. Marginal NHLer/excellent AHLer

    2. Bottom-pairing guy

    3. Top-4 , Bieksa-type.

If I had to lay odds, I would say something like 50% #2, 35% #3, 15% #1. But who knows, I could be way off.

I’d say he can be better than Bieksa. Has a better shot, and moves the puck well. Question is how his hockey sense is, and how he improves his reads of when to go for the big hit, and when to play a controlled and disciplined game.

100% agree. Sometimes revenge brings some level of satisfaction, other times you have incidents like McSorley or Bertuzzi.

only way to really get stupidity and cheap shots out other game, is the league to take a stance by having harsher dislike. Starting point is not to have not to have goon clowns like Parros in charge of discipline. If the goon honey after Laval’s goalie got 5 to 10 games suspension, that would take those type of cheap shots out the game. If you cross heck someone on the back of the head and the penalty for first time offenders is 5 game suspension, that will increase to 10 games for thr second infraction., and a coach gets 5 games, those types of penalties would be real deterrents.

The bottom line for me is that they are making progress. Last year they ended up 14 games below 500, right now slightly past the 1/2 way mark they are 1 game below 500.  Rome wasn't built in a day. Monty is emerging as a #1 goalie, the young defense is gaining experience (painful at times as expected), Slaf is progressing and maturing. We need to find another young offensive dynamo at the draft and hope that Dach can emerge and stay healthy. A lot of positive signs if you want to look at the glass as half full.

There is a lot of positives. The D has been a lot more offensively productive than I thought - even though we are as porous defensively as I expected. The offensive is worst than I thought (mainly because of Dach going down, and Caufield’s recovery time from shoulder surgery), but it’s been improving.

i said last year 25-26 is the year we should be targeting to make the playoffs, and I still think that is the year we legitimately can EXPECT to be able to make it. Any earlier is based on luck, and a hope and prayer. We are going through a co plate rebuild. Management has managed expectations accordingly. Not sure why people here keep getting upset about a big loss, or getting their hope up for that playoffs after a surprise win.

we have a young D, and don’t have some of the major pieces needed on the team yet (Hutson and Reinbacher).

the guys here are going to be inconsistent. That’s part of the growing pains of a young D. We also need to to add more talent up front and have Suzuki, Caufield, Dach and Slafkovsky at a minimum to show they are all legit Top 6 guys and at least two to be legit top line guys - the top line has looked good the last 10 or so games - so we are getting their. Hopefully they continue to progress!

Not yet. But that said, the goaltender is part of the team, too.

It is. But are goaltending is not good enough for us to win significantly more games because only the goaltending carries us for a sustained run during the season like Price carried us.

last year because of the goaltending we finished 5th last instead of 3rd or 4th last. This year it’s been good enough that at the end of the year we may finish 25-26, instead of 27-28. The goaltending has been good, but it’s not even close to being good enough as Hasek or Price good that would be required to get us into the playoffs.

watching Xhekaj play for Laval this season, makes me wonder if he may not be the odd LD out from the Habs lineup. He would be an excellent addition to EDM for example. I think it would be a mistake by the Habs, but it would not surprise me from HughGort since they are building the team in a different way than I would. So, here it is:

To EDM: Xhekaj (two more waiver exempt seasons, for salary cap relief), would fit right in in their 3rd pair.

To MTL: one of Xavier Bourgault (2 more waiver excempt seasons) or Raphaël Lavoie (waiver eligible, in the AHL right now). I think Lavoie would fit well as a mid-6 forward with the Habs. Bougrault's projection has dropped down from what I can read, but he seems to have the higher pedigree.

There no way I’d move Wifi right now. Definitely not for Lavoie.
    we finally have good prospects,

we aren’t going to make the playoffs this year, and probably not next year. Why are you so eager to give up on guys until we know what we have? IF wifi, does develop into a decent physical shutdown puck moving D, that is a bit of a unicorn, why trade him before we have a better gauge of his ceiling?? It’s not like we are gong to be able to win this year or next year,‘and none of the players you are suggesting are going to make a difference in where we finish during that next two years.

I don’t see us being a legit playoff team until our young D develops and at least one of Reinbacher or Hutson is capable of being an NHL player.

this NHL season is meaningless. I don't know why you are so dismissive of the value of winning the Calder cup. It worked for TBL, didn;t it?

There’s a difference between having young players in the minors, developing and winning, as they develop, and sending guys that belong in a hit NHL down so that they can win in the minors.

we are trying to develop NHL players, winning at a level lower than you should be expecting a not much of an accomplishment. It’s as bad as the friends I have honkept their kids back in school for a year, so that they will be bigger than the other kids in their class, and have have better chance of making sports teams🙄

Organizationally, do you want to reward players for mouthing off about ice time by giving them a huge raise through an NHL promotion?  That's not a good precedent to set and that's what Beaudin has done behind the scenes.  Norlinder could be a designated scratch though, sure.  Not sure they should be going out of their way to be playing one of those on a nightly basis though.  And what sort of message are you sending to Struble for demoting him when he's doing well?  I get the idea of trying to have a long playoff run in Laval but sending a deserving player down (and giving him the corresponding big pay cut) to call a no-good flunky up for the purpose of maybe winning some minor league playoff games isn't going to go over well with a lot of players.  Development-wise, maybe him staying up for the stretch and then playing at the Worlds might be better.

You mention sending two down when Pearson/Newhook come back but what about the other part of that - what happens when Monahan gets moved?  Or Pearson?  Or another forward?  Whoever you send down is probably coming back up.  Maybe they get a body back for Pearson but they don't have the healthy depth to avoid raiding Laval at some point.

Struble had played one bad game - he shouldn’t be sent down. We are developing players for the nhl, not the AHL. Guys that need time should be in the AHL, guys that don’t, shouldn’t be sent down so that they can win at a lower level than they should be.

We are in the low 40% for team xG%.  We are still a bottom ten team in the league and some OT points and luck in goaltending doesnt really change that.

100% agree. This year and next I’m just looking for an increase in production from Suzuki, Caufield, and Slafkovsky to play better. I really thought Suzuki was going to get over 80 points and Caufield over 40 goals. I also see this year and next as a time to get a better read on our young D. Is Guhle trending to be a top pairing, or middle pairing? Can Barron be a middle pairing guy, and will Wifi be a guy that can be part of the future. I’m really happy they sent wifi down for development this year. Better now than when we get more crowded on D.

While I was looking for high production from Suzuki, Caufield and Dach this year, I still thought we’d  finish between 25 and 28. Is still think we finish between 25 to 27 - unless the Sens really pick it up.

we are not a wildcard or bubble team yet. We were a bottom feeder that overachieved because of goaltending, and look better because of the OT/SO loser point.

I think we are confusing playoff team with a contender team.

If our injuries weren’t so severe our second line would be

    Newhook - Dach - Monahan

Habs are about to enter bubble status, climbing out of bottom feeder status is what I’m saying, not that we are ready to compete.

We are not a playoff team even with a better second line. Our D is still learning to play. While I think Dach looked like he eas ready to take a big step forward, we don’t know if Newhook is a 2nd or 3rd liner. While we would have been better, I don’t think we’d even be a real bubble team by we get to games 70-82.

I'm very, very happy we have St-Louis instead of Roy.

So am I. But o do think that Roy will become a good coach at the NHL level. Who knows if he has a lot of success he may be a viable candidate for us in the future - but only if he proves he can win and play nice with others while doing so. Let another team develop him.

Im not overly concerned by this, I guess its cause I didnt see them as a playoff contender yet, so the Sens/Bruins games are not a setback from where I had them.

100% agree. Only thing that surprises me is that we are ahead of the Sens on the standings.

Kovacevic's struggles seem really to have exposed the D. With him out - and I agree that he was struggling badly, so it's not just his absence but his regression - our D suddenly looks like a bunch of rookies brought up too soon. It doesn't help that Struble also seems to be regressing after his impressive start.

Mid-year fatigue, which is often an issue with young players, may also be relevant. Most of these guys were injured last season and do not have experience with the meat-grinder of a full NHL season.

Just think, three games ago people on this board were talking about us as a borderline playoff team...

I don’t get the constant playoff talk everytime we string a few wins together. We are not close to be being a playoff team. East has been lousy and our loser points make it seem we are closer to a wildcard than we actually will be in another month.

I said at the start of this year, we don’t have the D to be a playoff team, and I haven’t seen anything to change my mind. The D has score more than I thought they would have (while the forwards have scored less than I thought they would). Unless Hutson and Reinbacher suddenly are suddenly playing like Makar and Seider in their first years, we probably aren’t a playoff team next year either.

25-26 is the year we should be targeting for the playoffs.

we have a young team with an extremely young D. It’s going to take time. Wifi isn’t going to make us better, and either is Kovacavec.

I don't think anyone is questioning whether the Habs should be interested in Zegras. He is obviously a talented forward, it's a matter of what price do you pay to get him.

    Thanks for your trade suggestions.

As well as the cost to resign him. I’d love to add him if both were right, but I’m pretty sure Anaheim is going to be looking for a PLD type deal. We dodged that bullet, and as much as I’d love to add a guy like Zegras, I wouldn’t want to pay the price Anaheim will be looking for.
