  1. Bottom two fill-outs, we can deal with those as they come. So do we really need to trade for a winger, or even a centre now? Or, prep for the future and get our guy in place now, ready for Koivu's farewell after next season?

I doubt we'll make a major deal right now, the time isn't right. We'd have to give up some key roster players if we wanted to land a big name. We have a great record, but we're still not a top-tier contender, and we should sit on the young talent we have and let them improve. Next year or more likely the year after is when we'll be going for a big name I'd expect.

  2. It may seem like a bit of a hike, but for what he brings to the team, i think it would be money well spent. Look at what the Habs are paying Bouillon and Dandy. And Streit is definitely more valuable then either of them. If that is what he is looking for, i think BG should lock him up.

They are both overpaid, but it is BG's tendency to overpay people.

You guys are seriously overrating him, but it seems like a lot of people do so maybe that includes other GMs. We should package him off in a second if we got a good offer from a team that was impressed by the illusion of his 50 point pace and his "versatility". Maybe Calgary would go for him + Ryder for Tanguay if Ryder alone wasn't enough. Mike Keenan would be strangeling him in a week the guy is so frustrating to watch.

He's not as bad as you make him sound. And come on, no one would ever deal Tanguay for Ryder and Streit.

  3. I don't think there will be a huge bidding war for Huet in this off-season. He's not that big of an upgrade over the average goalie, and thus not worth shelling out the big long term deal for. Plus, lots of places have young guys that they'd like to develop just like we do here, so it wouldn't be that big of an upgrade for him to go there. A four year deal for him is unacceptable in my opinion, but three years is doable. Of course, one or two years would be ideal, but I doubt he'd accept that. So maybe three years 10-12 million or thereabouts.

  4. Yeah, we'd do well to keep Streit, we can't keep losing pieces of our top powerplay unit and expect it to stay at the top of the league. I heard somewhere, probably here, that apparently he wants a three year 6 million dollar contract. Hopefully we could get him for a bit less, closer to 5 million over that period.

  5. Streit is good, but he definitely does benefit from being with Markov and Kovalev on the powerplay. He's not the quarterback, Markov is. I do prefer his passing ability to Souray's though, but of course his shot is way inferior. I hope he improves from experience, after all he's played less than a full season as a PP point man. He often takes too many shots that miss the net or are harmless, he's just not that big a threat, so hopefully he learns to pick his spots better.

  6. Carle, Fisher, Subban also play RD. On the LD, you've got McDonaugh, Valentenko and Emelin... And I'm not even mentionning projects like Weber or Paquet...

    Markov-Komo

    McDo-O'B

    Valentenko-Carle

    Emelin-Fisher

    Subban

That's 9 pretty good D right there. Our D is set for years...

Assuming they all pan out, of course.

I agree with Fanpuck, we have a tendency to think that all of our prospects picked in the 4th round or higher will be good NHL players down the line. How could you say that that's a good 9 D there when 6 of them have never even played in the NHL, much less played well? Some of these guys are intriguing, but it's unlikely that they'll all develop to their full potential. McDonagh seems like our highest rated prospect D-man and the best bet to be a good NHLer at this point, at least from what analysts say.

  7. S.Kostits plays with such fire and grit. Even when not scoring he is contributing physically. I remember one instance in the 3rd where he outmuscled the Devils d-man in the corner and got the puck.

Yeah, I remember that play. It was right off the face off, and him and the Devils' player were shoving each other before the puck was dropped, then lil Teets muscles his way in and completely beats him out on the play. I agree that he would be more useful than Ryder on the first line, but who knows maybe Ryder will find some touch soon. If he doesn't I don't have much of a problem benching him, because Dandenault is more useful in the lineup. We won't get much for Ryder in a trade unless he goes on a tear, and losing him to free agency isn't that bad since it's pretty unanimous that he'll be gone anyways.

  8. Let's not get ahead of ourselves. This is not 'our year' like it is for Detroit, Ottawa, San Jose etc. We didn't make the playoffs last year and our team is still young and on the upswing. It's not the time to get expensive rentals, the golden age is ahead, we haven't quite reached it yet.

  9. I missed the first period because I thought it was a 7:30 game so I tuned in at 7:40 when the puck would drop and it was intermission

Yeah, me too. At least we didn't miss much.

It looks like all the Koivu fanboys are back to proclaim his godliness. He was good for half the game, a big improvement mind you, but he'll have to string together some solid performances before he regains his stature in my mind. Not to mention that his goal was a high stick, thankfully not disallowed.

  10. It wasn't much of a save but he managed to be sitting in the right place when the puck was bouncing around in front of him with 6 players right there, on some Devils powerplay. Also, his save on the Madden shorthanded break was solid, not big but he handled it well. He played well, the goals were not his fault.

Our penalty killing was good tonight too. I love Lapierre in the offense zone shorthanded, he always manages to kill some extra time or create something. This season we've had a tendency to kill off the first 80 seconds of a penalty really strongly and then the other team scores at the end. We held them off tonight.

  11. Ok lets weight some facts...

    - Phoenix was hurting bad for a goalie, they had like 4 goalies and all were terrible.

    - Bettman has stepped in before to make sure things go his way (see Jim Balsillie)

    - Burke could have sent him anywhere for a 7th round pick but instead he sends him directly to a DIVISION RIVAL for nothing!

    - With the way the selection works they could just wait long enough to get whatever team they wanted first in line (with the worst record) and then send him off.

    - There is always a market for a good starting goalie, I can name you five teams in the east that would kill to get their hands on Bryz.

The Balsillie thing is different because it deals with ownership and franchise location, which the league office is always involved in directly. This is player movement, which the league doesn't ordinarily tamper with. johnnyhasbeen's post seems like more of a plausible situation than yours. People like you can find a conspiracy where ever they look.

  12. Awesome, awesome game. My fist-pumping was violent and angry after our fourth goal.

First two periods it was the same story, we have one line creating the odd chance but the others were nowhere to be seen. I was ready to punch Koivu in the face through the TV. Then the two LONG 5 on 3s, we got a little unlucky there but to hold them to one goal, I knew down by only two goals we had a chance to come back. And when we scored that goal right of the bat we were in the game, and controlling it. Especially great performances from the Boobs brothers, Markov, Plex, Komi, and yeah, even Smo. Huet did a good job too, I can't really blame him for the goals and he made a few key stops.

We did, however, get kind of lucky. On the first goal Kovalev did a slew foot to trip the Devils player that allowed Big Jubblies to take the puck (and what a sweet job of it he did to control it and fire that pass). And the Koivu goal was a high stick, I was surprised (happy of course) that they didn't overrule it. There was no way his stick was at 4 feet, no matter if he was hunched over and all. Plus, the camera angle gave it away; the angle that they used was from a camera that is well above ice level, and Koivu's stick in the foreground should have appeared to be lower than the crossbar in the background if they were at the same height. But instead they appeared to be pretty close to the same level on screen. We all would have been pissed if that was a decisive goal against us.

  13. Bah, I don't remember it. I didn't care about the Habs at all back then, I was excited about the Jays winning the World Series.

This current team is the one I'm excited about, I follow it more closely and know more about each player than any other sports team in my life. These are guys that I'm watching develop, and I'm hoping they'll achieve some great things.

  14. I don't see how it outside the realm of possiblity. This sort of backdoor deal goes down every second of the day what makes the nhl so immune to such things?

Then again this is my favourite movie.....

I don't believe that there are no conspiracies, but you're the type that would suspect a conspiracy everywhere. There's no reason to believe the Bryzgalov move was a conspiracy, yet you think there is. It makes a lot more sense when you rationally weigh the facts that there simply wasn't a big market for a goalie at the time.

  15. It would be awesome for us to win tonight, but I'm mainly focused on how we play. If we come out and play hard and try to take it to them, I won't mind if we end up with a loss or even no points.

I think that we have as good a chance to beat them now as at any point recently, we have more speed and more offensive threats.

  16. Huet is top 5 in the league for save % and top 10 in GAA. His value is very high and I don't believe for one second that Bryz getting waived was because of a lack of interest, I choose to believe something shady went on behind the scenes there. No way Gretzky gets handed a respectable starting goalie for nothing.

That's ridiculous, you can wear your tin-foil hat if you want to though.

  17. I am pessimisstic because I have watched this team way to closely and been let down way to much. But I also predicted before the season that if everything went well they could finish

over 100 points and if things did not they would be in the low 90s. A lot better than the simplistic analysis of the professionals at TSN.

I mean, I am really supposed to listen to Mike Milbury? The guy who traded Luongo, Heatley, Bertuzzi, McCabe and Jokinnen and received Dipietro and Trevor Linden?

    Ridiculous.

TSN seems to go out of its way to find the stupidest people to put in front of the camera. Mike Milbury earned his reputation as one of the worst GMs ever, Darren Dreger is a complete tool who shouldn't have ever made it out of the seventh grade, Healy is dumb but can at least be funny sometimes (I wish he was the next GM in TO), Pierre McGuire is dumb too but the times he makes us laugh aren't intentional. Good thing for Duthie and Bob McKenzie, they are pretty good.

  18. Saku's not getting traded this year, guys. It'll be interesting to see how he views his season and his role in the offseason. I could see him having a good talk with Gainey at the end of the year and then come back re-energized for next year, finally accepted a lesser, but still important, role. I think he's a little stunned by the turn of events this year, and fully expected to once again be the go-to-guy on offence.

More like he was stunned/out of it, THEN he lost his role of being the go-to guy. I don't think he's done though, I was sure Kovalev was done after his last two seasons, and he's proved me wrong and then some. Koivu's having a down year, but he can still turn it around. I bet he'll be playing well come March.

Anyways, no need for a shake up at this point. If we were currently out of playoff spot I'm certain Gainey wouldn't sit on his hands this year, and any player (besides our young core) would be open to consideration for a trade.
