    Back to trade proposals..

Puljujarvi for Byron and a pick...

    Yay? Nay?

Nay! A thousand times nay! Why would we want to give up an effective roster player and a second round pick for a struggling prospect who has demanded a trade? I wouldn’t mind Bergevin taking a flyer on Puljujarvi for Hudon and a second or third, but not if we are giving up anything substantial

Look, the truth is what has or doesn't have value is a matter of personal perspective, literally what the bartering system was built on. What you might see as valuable, might be viewed as complete junk to someone else, simple as that, always has been. As far as trying to make a stink about down votes and such, like there is some kind of non existent stigma on down voting, is silly, to put it lightly. The system to rate a post is there, its a fine thing to have in any environment where discussion is prevalent. Trying to call people out about how they rate a post while in the same breath claiming they are not respecting another person's opinion is a contradiction and a half, considering that rating a post is also a form of someone else's opinion about an opinion. If they very much agree or disagree with your post is entirely their right, expressing it is entirely their right, you may find it harsh, the same as they may have found the post harsh.

Ultimately there is no difference with someone POSTING their opinion and someone RATING their opinion, if you believe in one you should believe in both, because you are agreeing to allow people to express their thoughts one way or another.  Anyways, i'm getting side tracked, back on topic...

Really wondering if Bergevin is working on some other kind of big swing right now, because it seems like the easy back up plan at this point, to infuse the top 6 with some talent, would be to really pick Vegas' brain about Gusev. It just seems like they would let him go for adequate asset replenishment, the kind of assets we have in abundance and would be an affordable top 6 contract probably under 5 mill per. The fact we are not going after this obvious situation leads me to wonder if we are not currently working on pulling a bigger fish out of the pond until we either get him on the boat or the line gets cut.

I would think Gusev at the reported price of a second round pick would be a no-brainer. I also think Ferland would be a good addition. I’m not saying both but adding one of these guys would be excellent

How about Weber and either Drouin (preferred) or Gallagher for Marner. Than try and sign Marner for $12m/6 years

it weakens are defence big things big time, but we basically have a 4-5 year window left with Price and 3 to 4 years of Weber as elite players.  No way we can have a serious contender within that time frame.

for Toronto they will probably need to move another contract.  But they solidify their D for next year with Reilly, Weber, Muzzin and Barrie.  And with Weber have improved their D for at least 4 years.

For me the hardest thing to accept is strengthening the hated leafs.  But we need a bold move that is going to have three years for the kids to improve and build the D.

Price may also asked to be moved given the window is further out, than so be it.  We need a real plan to build a contender than this retool and rebuild our n the fly.

in the East next year, Columbus has gotten worse and won’t make the playoffs. However, their spot will be taken by Florida. NJD and Philly also improved and will probably finish ahead of us.  Next year I’ll s another lost year.  With each lost year, Price and Weber get older and their value will be dropping.

I don’t see how one of our best d and a heart and soul player like Gallagher for Marner benefits Montreal. Also I don’t share your pessimism about next season for 2 reasons:

    1. Our backup goaltending should be better

    2. It is July.

This fellow think Habs are in worse shape than last year because:

    1. Didnt get enough return for Shaw (as he calls it a 'bag of pucks')
    2. Didnt sign Duchene
    3. Offer was to low on Oho.

What Brendan Kelly does NOT know about hockey could fill the Bell Centre and half the other rinks in the league. He is a doom and gloom hack who never has anything good to say about Les Canadiens. It is a sad commentary on the Gazette that they have gone from writers like Michael Faber and Red Fisher to a non - expert like this one.

Why did this guy get a 2 million dollar raise from last year. He's jordie Benn.

I want so badly to be positive, but I just cannot do it. This constant patch work on this D-Corp is a joke.

This signing is basically a guarantee that Gardiner won't be signing here.

As I understand it, he is faster, meaner and more physical than Benn.

His signing does not preclude Gardiner anymore than Benn re-signing would have.

A 7 year term might keep Montreal from signing Gardiner. If he signs elsewhere at a shorter term, I will be pissed

Chiarot isnt bad but hes not great.

He played second pair last year with Byfuglien.  Sound defensively and can shoot.

Hes a bit of a an upgrade on Jordie Benn.  But not a huge one.

Will they want him with Petry or leave kulak there and have chiarot as the experienced defensive d with rookie juulsen

That said still a bit underwhelming

I mentioned this in another thread, but some analysts including Ray Ferraro on tsn radio yesterday have said that they think that Chariot is underrated. I hope they are right. I also hope we DO NOT sign Gardiner for 7years

  7. We could still get Gardiner. It never hurts to to have a fallback position when negotiating. Ray Ferraro and others I respect think Chariot is underrated.

I would love Gardiner at a 5 year term but think we would be better off—in the long term— passing on him if the price is 7 x 7. I think he is holding out for 7 years and that is the real reason that he is not signed yet.

No way a UFA agreed to twiddle his thumbs for seven days just to sign with the Habs. Other suitors may have spent their dough by then, so it is an absolutely terrible negotiating strategy.

A team can go over the cap in summer. They can still add Gardiner if that’s the move they want yo make

If I am Montreal I would do that in a heartbeat. I don't think Edmonton would, they would rather see him go to Europe for a year.  I don't think Holland is in any rush to trade him.

You are probably right, but who knows Edm is in need of wingers on the cheap

  10. Finally, I’m seeing really good asset management from MB. Moving a player like Deslaurier for a 4th rounder is excellent. Cap space and draft picks are now the premier currency of the NHL. Conversely, long term over payment for free agents is a killer. I hope that M. Bergevin remembers that tomorrow.

Jake Allen or James Reimer would be interesting, as both could be traded with an asset attached, both are reportedly great team guys, and both fit the Habs' cap crunch window.

I think Reimer and a first or even Reimer and a 2nd and 3rd for Hudon or a mediocre prospect would be excellent. Hope Bergevin is able to negotiate a deal

How well-positioned are the Habs to succeed in such 'anything goes' playoff series (assuming they could make the playoffs)? Guys like Domi and Gallagher will feel right at home, but is the team on the whole gritty/heavy enough to survive? Not a veiled criticism of the team; I'm honestly asking.

Unfortunately, I don’t think that they are very well positioned in that area given the way they were manhandled by “heavy” teams at times during the regular season

It would be nice to squeak in, but I'm mentally preparing myself to miss and am more or less ok with that after seeing them fail in games against good teams lately.  The prize for squeaking in is Tbay, and we don't have the talent to hang with Tbay.  I used to be hopeful that we'd get 7th place and maybe have a shot at upsetting the Caps...but after watching both the Habs and the Caps lately, I really don't think this team has that sort of an upset in them.  So, no matter what teh outcome, I'm at peace now.  The last 2 losses have taken the nerves right out of the equasion; whatever happens...happens.

I am not ready to be so serenely Zen about the situation yet. But, should they lose tonight I will move on: after a suitable mourning period of alternating teeth- clenching rage and dark despair.

    Niemi starts, Kotkaniemi sits again.

    I hate it.

I am ok with Kotkaniemi sitting again  and although I see the need for it— and agree with the reasoning, see CC’s post above— Niemi makes me nervous.

Are we going to see good Niemi or are the Habs going to have to score 7 goals to win this game?

Stayed tuned. It’s either going to be “the miracle in San Jose” starring St. Anti OR “San Jose horror show continues for Habs: why didn’t Bergevin get a better backup?”

I am hoping, but not terribly optimistic, for the first one.

Use our cap space and take on a bad contract to get an asset..

Oilers send Lucic (40% retained) and Puljujärvi to Montreal for Hudon and a draft pick??

is that Lucic contract too bad to take?

I have been thinking about that for a while. I don’t think the oilers would retain 40% though.

i think it would be a worthwhile gamble
