When you are rebuilding, the best strategy is to have numbers.  Have lots of prospects.  Lots of lottery tickets.  If Mete makes top 4, great.  If he doesn't, one of your others does.  The idea here is to hoard prospects.  If we want to finish this rebuild, we need to add prospects at the defence position, not trade them away for guys who are 10 years older.

Mete should be one of many.

I’m not saying that we should go all in, but if Mete for Muzzin accelerates the “re-set” it should be considered. Don’t get me wrong, the last thing I want the team to do is to make an ill-advised trade, but again it depends on where they see Mete’s ceiling, and most importantly— that their assessment is correct.

Muzzin will be 30 before the playoffs start.

The habs are still in rebuild mode.  Adding Muzzin is not enough to win a cup.

I have no interest in making moves to win now and sacrificing Mete and another prospect for a guy who is 10 years older.

Makes no sense for building this team IMO

I think it depends on how you value Mete. If he develops into a top 4 d maybe you are right. If not, maybe you make the deal. My crystal ball is foggy on Mete’s potential but it doesn’t seem that he has the offensive chops for top 2. Does the rest of his game push him into the top 4? If not, we have a plethora of 5-6 D men and they are not difficult to acquire if you need one.

He's played in every game this season and is still logging over 21 minutes per night.  I don't think he's really been out of their good books.  I'll also add that while he is a left-shot defender, I remember reading recently that he has stated in the past that he prefers to play the right side.

I stand corrected. I thought he had sat out

Dont think calgary is interested in moving a top four defenceman for schlemko plus futures.  They are battling for first in their division.  Why are they moving him to get a 20 year old d, two thirds, and a cap dump?

Brodie was seriously out of favor with Calgary fans and was a healthy scratch earlier in the season. Has he worked his way back into the coaching staff’s good books?

  5. I agree that the d is not an area of strength but I don’t think that it will be the pitiful chaos that we have seen in recent weeks. Also, Schlemko is not our top left d and I am not sure that anyone other than Claude Julien thinks that he should get the first shot at playing with Weber. I would put Mete or Reilly there ahead of the Schlem, who, in the immortal words of noted Habs fan Shania Twain, “ don’t impress me much”.

  6. A lot has been written about the Habs defense lately— most of it negative, and deservedly so.

However, I disagree with the idea that Weber’s presence on its own will not fix many of the team’s problems on D. The knock-on effects are enormous.

    Think about it:

    Alzner exiled

Benn out of the top 4

Petry out of the top pair

The addition by subtraction is in itself a massive upgrade. Now, if only Mete or Reilly could consistently play well  with Weber and move Sclemhco to the bottom 6 or press box and all will be well.

The average NHL team needs  about 11 different d-men/yr. So why waive and trade your #6 & #7 d-men at start of season. I am for Mete to see some time in Laval asap, play big minutes down there and dominate a bit, a full year in AHL didnt seem to hurt Subban's development any.

Shaw brings more good than bad, even though obviously undisciplined player.

Deslauries is a pretty good 4th line checker, isnt he?

Scherbak; Julien, Muller and Ducharme keep sitting him for some reason.

I see your point about d depth but they are not 6-7 but 8-9.

    Weber Reilly

    Petry Benn

    Juluson Mete

    Oulette

    Schelmko

    Alzner

I know only 10 games into our season is a very small sampling but I thought we could evaluate every 10 games or so and see how we do for the entire season. The biggest question will likely be, can we keep up this speed, buy-in and work ethic for the whole season.

    The positives:

    - after 10 games we have had a much better start than last year with a 6-2-2 record for 14 out of a possible 20 points.

    - we are both a very fast and young team. We have seemingly very quickly become a team that successful NHL teams are made of. Young and very fast with some skill.

    - we have some good and exciting surprises with a number of our players: Max Domi, Jesperi Kotkaniemi, MIke Reilly, Victor Mette, Noah Juulsen......

    - some veteran players who at this point are playing much better than last year. Jonathan Drouin, Thomas Tatar, Carey Price.......

    - the players seem, at this point, to have "bought all in" to the system the coaches have introduced.

    - the coaching staff: 1. the new additions of Dominique Ducharme & Luke Richardson seem very well received by the players and they have improved us [according to the players].

    - the new system: we are much more fun to watch and we seem to be playing to our strengths.....speed, a strong forecheck, a good back check, paying attention to helping the "D".

    - young players not yet in the NHL. I'm thinking Suzuki, Ryan Poehling, Cale Fleury.....we should see a few more, one or two young guys at least, make the jump next year.

    -  we seem to be accomplishing a "rebuild" on the fly without having to go years and years at the bottom of the league.

    - the two key trades we made, Max P and Alex G., at this point are very much in our favour. I know that can turn around quickly, but 10 games in we have to declare we have a big advantage at this point. We'll see after 20 games if that has changed.

    - we have done very well without Weber and Schlemko.

The negatives: [this section may be small now but has the potential to grow as the season progresses.

    - if our play continues this way, more or less, we will not get a really high top 5 draft pick next June which most of us expected.

    - the disappointment and no games in for Nikita Scherbak.

    - maybe...Andrew Shaw? Too many penalties, undisciplined, possible trade material? He has been good with Kotkaniemi though.

    - what happens when Weber and Schlemko return? Who has to leave?

    Thoughts?

I am eager to see how all of the positives you mentioned ( all of which I agree with, btw) do against Tampa Bay, Washington and, to a lesser extent, Dallas this week.

I think/hope Alzner will be waived and Schelmko traded when all of d is healthy. I would like to keep Shelmko for depth, but I can’t see him clearing waivers.

You left Deslauriers off your list of negatives. I would like to see one of him or Shaw gone and Scherbak given a real shot

I just don't see why some people have such hope for this guy.  He's never shown anything on the NHL level and his window is rapidly closing.

The Plekanec injury is suspicious.  Do you really think he is hurt or it's a way to not lose a player through waiver.  Workman's comp scam^_^

If so, it is an  encouraging sign because it means that the management team is getting smarter ?

  10. Let’s wait a few more games before anointing all of these moves as unqualified successes. People scoff at small sample sizes for a reason: they tend to produce anomalies or simply misleading results. If the Canadiens keep playing with such vim and vigour— not necessarily winning at this pace- for most of the season, I will be the first to admit that Bergevin is not as much of a moron as I thought.

  11. Yes, I know they traded for him so that they had the Laval option but I thought-and still think— that Bitten will exceed expectations at the NHL level. That is why I was questioning the trade- that and a rebuilding team trading a wavier exempt 20 year old for a 23 year old. Maybe—hopefully— I’m wrong and Bergevin is right?
