  1. I really hope the BG is not stupid enough to give up on Ryder yet. Also, why would we trade an excellent-- still young-- goalie who thrives on the pressure in Montreal and a promising young forward for a minimal upgrade in goal? Who started this rumour? Rejean Houle?! :-)

  2. I liked him when he did color for the Habs on CJAD. What I saw of his comments on TSN(a brief clip on the website) indicated he thought the Habs should have went for a forward or D-man... which seemed to be the initial reaction of almost everyone here and in the media.

  3. Give the guy a break... as I said on another thread Bob and Claude must see some potential there or he wouldnt still be on the roster...especially if the " new and improved" NHL features a speed and skill game.

  4. I liked Ward, but speaking of Kilger if BG had qualifyied everyone like John Ferguson did he would have had no cap room for Kovalev and his unrestricted free agents.

By getting rid of Brisbois and Ward BG left himself room to manuver.

  5. It was very strange for me to be cheering for Joe Thorton against Saku -- I hope it never happens again.

However, for the first time I have respect for Joe as a player. He would look good in the Bleu, Blanc et Rouge

  6. I may not be a high-powered lawyer like Bettman or Goodenow but I think my math skills must be better

A loss of a season means that some franchises may fold due to the millions of $$$$ they are losing.

A loss of a franchise means the loss of 30-35 players jobs plus the associated minor league positions.

Adding that many free agents in a dispersal draft will reduce player's salaries-- its simple supply and demand:

too many teams and not enough skilled players= todays NHL. Reduce the demand and you reduce salaries.

When I read about players who say that they are doing this for the next generation of players, I want to puke. This adds up to millions in losses and long-term damage to the health of the league as it will take time to win back disgruntled fans.

All of this may be good for fans in the long run, but I cannot believe how greedy, stupid and short-sighted both sides are being. I'm so pissed, I may have to give up professional hockey the same way I did baseball after their last strike.

  7. According to the Gazette, Guy Charron turned down a contract offer with the Habs to join the Panthers.

I wonder who we will get to replace him as special teams coach?

  8. This is good news and now.... for a free agent or two

    Habs re-sign Ribeiro, three others

MONTREAL (CP) -- The Montreal Canadiens re-signed team scoring leader Mike Ribeiro as well as forwards Niklas Sundstrom, Marcel Hossa and Steve Begin on Wednesday.

Ribeiro, Hossa and Begin were restricted free agents while Sundstrom became an unrestricted free agent after the Habs declined to tender him a $1.95-million US qualifying offer before July 1.

Ribeiro, a bargain at $770,000 last season, signed a one-year, $1.55-million deal. He led the Canadiens with 65 points (20-45) in 81 games, his breakthrough year in the NHL.

The 24-year-old centre was on vacation in Portugal and could not be reached for comment.

Sundstrom, 29, agreed to a two-year, $2.5-million contract. The defensive winger had 20 points (8-12) and a plus-3 rating in 66 games last season and was one of the club's top penalty killers. He will earn $1.2 million next season and $1.3 million in 2005-06.

The pesky Begin, 26, signed a two-year, $1.5-million deal that also includes a third-year club option at $850,000. He had 15 points (10-5) in 52 games as well as 41 penalty minutes. He will earn $700,000 next season and $800,000 in 2005-06.

"I'm pretty excited," said Begin, who had shoulder surgery last month. "Now I can just think about my off-season program and getting ready for next season.

"My goal is to play in every game, to stay healthy. I'd like to improve my stats, score more goals, but the main thing is to give everything I've got in every game."

On July 3, Begin married his girlfriend Amelie, who is expecting a daughter in October. For that reason, he has so far made no plans to play in Europe or elsewhere if the 2004-05 season is postponed by a lockout.

The Trois-Rivieres, Que., native became a solid regular on the checking line after he was claimed off waivers from Buffalo on Oct. 3 and a crowd favourite for his energetic play.

"From my first game here, I felt I was part of the team," the former Calgary Flame said. "(Coach) Claude Julien gave me a lot of ice time and I took advantage of it.

"It's fun to play here. I love the fans and I guess they like the way I play."

Hossa, 22, agreed to a one-year deal. The younger brother of Ottawa star Marian Hossa spent most of last season with AHL Hamilton, collecting 40 points (18-22) in 57 games.

  9. You are all forgetting two important things: 1. predicting the performance of rookies is an inexact science and 2. injuries.

Sundstrum is a solid, defensively responsible veteran who can play on the 3rd or 4th line (or even the second in a pinch) and who gives us important depth. Another good move by BG. Another good sign is the Sunny reportedly turned down more money elsewhere because he likes Montreal --- at last the universe is starting to get back to its proper order.

  10. You are right a healthy, motivated Pavel would be a wonderful addition.

Unfortunately, the P. Bure I just described hasn't been seen since he left Vancouver. Until he proves that his knee is healthy -- which I think is not the case--- he can't even be considered and even then the risk/price would be too high

  11. As I posted under "Habs Pick up Dagenais Option", I think picking up Dags was a good move. He can score and that is a precious commodity in the NHL. With an improvement in his skating --- which I am sure will be demanded by the team-- he will be able to make a positive contribution. If not he will be banished to Hamiltion--- Cheap insurance. Not only to keep him on hand for us, but also to prevent him blossoming with another team. Canadiens management has been guilty of impatience in the past... this should not be the case with BG.

  12. Valuable, perhaps, but not to the Habs.

All of those players you mentioned were added by serious Stanley Cup contenders who felt they needed a veteran character player or two for a run at the Cup. Unfortunately, the Habs are not there yet.

IMHO, we need to continue the youth movement and supplement the yongsters with a veteran free agent (or 2) who is still young... not an expensive, injury-prone player on the down-hill side like Leclair.

  13. As I said, if the offense matches the defense the Al's will dominate. Notice that the special teams tacklers were also dominant. My only concern is the the Als maintain this intensity level for the entire season. It is important for the Alouettes to finish strong and to go into the playoffs on a high note.

  14. Cavillo does not suck. The Alouettes offense sucks and it will soon catch up to the defense and the team will be dominant. Imagine, if the Als can win when the offense sucks that bad what will they be like when the offense is good.

Also I had to laugh about the Esks stealing a player from Calgary's ! practise roster after screaming about the Als taking Landry.... Another great move by Popp I might add. Ottawa will provide an interesting test. I'm really looking forward to the game

  15. I think that this is a good move by Gainey. I know that many of you don't like Dags, because he isn't intense and doesn't use the body much, but he scored 14 goals in limited playing time and that's what we need him to do. I'm sure that BG &CJ told Dags that this is his last chance and that he must go to a skating school to improve his mobility. If Dags produces he's on the team if he doesn't, he's in the AHL on a 2-way contract. Cheap insurance IMHO.

  16. I left the UAE on June 1st and after a week in the UK am now home in Canada. I am actually watching a few classic NHL games( and even repeats of old entry drafts on TSN, how sad).

I am hoping to get to Montreal for an Alouettes game and some the Jazz Festival and to TO for an International rugby game Canada vs France on July 6th.

The best thing about working in the UAE is 2.5 months vacation.
