  1. If you want to pick the Houle trade that signalled that the Canadiens were about to plummet into chaos this is it. There are a few trades by other teams that were equally bad Eg. the Cam Neely trade from Van. to Boston, but for the Habs none worse.

I think that the worst part of the end of the Savard era and the Houle years was the way that the Habs were humiliated in the trade market. The trade noted above, Turgeon for Corson, Tucker for Zalapski and Vuckota(sp) ... I could go on but the memories are too painful.

Did Houle ever make a good trade? I can't remember at the moment.

Thank God BG is in charge now... he's not infallible: see Audette, Donald with the Stars, but he knows what he is doing, has a plan and sticks to it.

  2. Adios, Andreas, Thanks.

I'd say we did well with Dackell: Acquired for an 8th round draft choice, several seasons of excellent effort and now that the Habs have younger players to fill the gap, he leaves as an UFA.

  3. Ulmer isn't that bad especially compared to some of the other hacks in Toronto, like Strachan.

I really think that this has to be a joke-- not even Leaf writers are THAT stupid, even though some of the fans are. I may email Ulmer and ask him.

If I am right, I will propose something suitably nasty for you to eat AP:)

  4. I copied this information from the Canadiens Official Website.

    GUIDELINES

To contact a member of the organization or Canadiens player via regular mail*:

    Send your correspondence to:

    Alexei Kovalev

    c/o The Montreal Canadiens

    1275 St. Antoine Street West

    Montreal, QC, CANADA

    H3C 5L2

  5. I love the conservative response whenever Bush has screwed up and it actually gets reported

" Oh, Its not that bad if only that nasty liberal media wouldnt exaggerate!"

The truth is that from 9/11 until now Bush has somehow evaded serious criticism like it was unpatriotic to say bad things about an incompetent, lying, ineffectual regime.

IF the media had done its job before the Iraq invasion and racheted up the pressure for real proof of WMD then maybe this mess would have been avoided. Failing that, perhaps the invasion could have been delayed so that they would have had time to develop an exit strategy.

Right now, the only terrorists in Iraq are Americans. Fighting against an occupying military does not make you a terrorist: it makes you a resistance fighter, a patriot.

Don't get me wrong, I freverently hope that Bin Laden and his ilk are erradicated from the face of the Earth, but the fiasco in Iraq does nothing to fight terror and everything to show Muslims that the USA will invent reasons to attack them and will show no mercy. As I said before Bin Laden must be happy that Georgie is causing so many new recruits to join the fold.

Take a look at the Gulf News www.gulfnews.com to get a idea of a relatively moderate view from the Arab world.

  6. I applaud the effort of the online questionairre --- doing something positive, even if you question its effectiveness, is always better than doing nothing.

Unfortunately, I question the usefulness of the exercise. BG is going to TRY to sign Kovalev if his analysis says its worthwhile and if he can get K under contract within the team's budget. The first is probably a lock; the second, who knows?

I suggest that fans sending personal letters to Kovalev--NOT email-- telling him how much we loved having him in a Habs uniform and how much we want him back might do some small good in convincing how wonderful a city Montreal is to play in and why he should accept less $$$ to stay in Montreal than to go try to re-establish himself with another team, in a "non-hockey market".

I KNOW that this might not accomplish anything, but I'm going to do it anyway, because it certainly can't hurt for the player to know how much the fans really want him.

  7. If we trade Theo we have to replace him with another #1 goalie and Garon does NOT fit that description YET. Given more time -- and more playing time-- Garon may yet blossom into a legitimate #1, but it is my guess that he will do it with another team-in a season or two as BG uses what he will bring to improve the team:ghg:

  8. Not sure if this precludes AP from playing in the NHL next year or not. According to Bob McKenzie, the AHL suspension does NOT automatically apply to the NHL. Colin Campbell was quoted as saying that there are legal issues involved.

Also, AP will have to get IIHF approval if he wants/needs to play in Russia or anywhere else in Europe next season.

I for one hope to see him in a Habs uniform next season. The only problem is- if they let him play- what to do if he makes the team in training camp, but struggles badly later in the season.

    :ghg:

  9. Obviously, AP got what TB should have gotten.

Bertuzzi's contract and union make it uncomfortable for the NHL to do what's right. So, the AHL in "consultation" with Gary Betteman decided to make an example of Perezhogin.

I think 30 games would have been fair. Any word on an appeal. BTW, how can Stafford's action been a "contributing factor" while P's actions were "indefensible". The factor that Stafford swung first is in itself a defense of sorts.

I really think that if this incident had happened with a Canadian draft pick of, say, the Laffs that the penalty woulld not have been so harsh.

  10. My list before last night would have been

    1. Calgary. 2. San Jose 3. Detroit 4. Tampa 5. Philly 6. Colorado 7. Toronto

Thank God both Toronto and Colorado are gone

    I am cheering for

    1. Calgary (heart, timely scoring and goatending- What I had hoped for from Montreal, although we got two of the three Jose had an off- playoff)

    2. San Jose: same above

    3. Tampa- first time I have cheered for a team that beat the Habs- that usually puts a team on my shit list for at least a decade

    4. Phillly because they are the reminder to me of the decline of the Habs. Savard's terrible trade of Desgardin, LeClair and Dionne for Recchi and Martin Honneburger; Houle's incompetence in the Rechhi trades; ARRAGH ! Makes me sick just thinking about it.

I never liked this team much but I pray that they never win a cup until Recchi, LeClair and Desgardin leave the team. I would almost rather cheer for Toronto.

  11. Leafs Suck is right Leaf fans- especially those in the media are insufferable until they are humbled. Contrast the deluded ramblings of Jim Hunt before Game six

    http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam040504/col_hunt-sun.html

with the reality descibed by Stephen Brunt (who is, BTW, a fine Journalist and a talented writer) http://www.globeandmail.com/servlet/story/.../BNStory/Front/

HUNT (delusional Montreal hating old hack)

"Ol' Hunt is convinced the Maple Leafs will beat the Philadelphia Flyers tonight. They just can't play as badly as they did Sunday in Philadelphia. Bryan McCabe was the goat but he was merely the worst of a bad lot. If nothing else the Leafs should be well rested. Besides they have played well in their first two games at home. This is a team that bounces back from embarrassing losses.

They'll do it again and force a seventh game which they will probably lose. Should they do the unthinkable tonight the Leafs can expect to be booed off the ice.

This isn't Montreal where the fans gave the Habs a standing ovation after they'd lost four in a row to the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Leafs fans expected a lot this season. To avoid getting booed off the ice it behooves the Leafs to win tonight.

    BRUNT (Talented sports writer)

"Because who knows when the next hockey year will roll around. Because who can tell how accommodating a brave new economic world might be for a team that has traditionally relied more on its vast stores of cash than on brains and innovation.

And because this incarnation of the Maple Leafs, an over-the-hill gang that for a time bore a striking resemblance to the ancient heroes of 1967 — the last Toronto team to win the Stanley Cup — in dawn's light simply looks old, and full of question marks, especially with a long, labour war looming just beyond the horizon.

Meanwhile, in Toronto, where horns honk and street celebrations erupt every time the beloveds win during the playoffs, it was dead quiet last night after Mr. Roenick scored. A scattering of fans stayed behind, battling shock, cheering their team off the ice at the Air Canada Centre. And those few who dared look ahead could imagine only winter nights with no hockey, familiar names taking off the skates and moving to their rocking chairs, a veteran coach maybe put out to pasture — and perhaps no Don Cherry, either.

On another tough Maple Leaf night, precious little comfort to be found there."

We as Habs fans talk about the failure of seasons: pity the poor Leafs fans humiliated at the continuation of DECADES of failure :P

  12. Bad news. I just read in the online version of the Gazette( sorry I didnt copy the link) that the T&C Islanders arent keen on joining Canada. They feel that our taxes are too high and the dollar too low. Did you know that the T&C asked to join Canada in the 1980's but that $%@$@!*!&*!!))(!&^^%$!!!!!!!!! Scumulrooney's government turned them down flat.

Oh well. I would have been nice the Golden Seals could have been reborn on a floating ice rink and they could move the Expos there and play their exhibition games in Cuba:)

  13. The Leafs haven't won the cup since 1967, the year I was born. I hope that they continue their tradition of "excellence" for another 60 or 70 seventy years. I would particularly enjoy celebrating the centennial of their last Cup victory along with my own. As they say here in the UAE "In'Shallah"- God willing.

  14. It would be wonderful of some kind soul could ease the suffering of those of us who cannot see the Habs in action.

I haven't seen a live hockey telecast since the 2002 Olympic final and it took a lot of effort to find place in Dubai that was broadcasting the game. It was worth it though.

  15. How could tbey punish AP more than Bertuzzi?

The Baron's player has a concussion. Steve Moore has fractured vertebrae.

For those who say they never want to see AP in a Habs uniform: does that mean you would be unhappy if Mr. Gainey somehow acquired TB from Vancouver?

AP made a mistake that will follow him the rest of his career. Thank God the other player wasn't hurt more. Suspend him for the same time as TB or less and get over it.

The simple, unfortunate, fact is that it probably will take a catastrophic injury on the ice to cause serious changes. Don't think that these kinds of things didnt happen in the past. The only difference is that now any incident is replayed thousands of times on the cable sports channnels.

I hope that this incident does not permanently damage the career of either player.

  16. I think BG will wait until he has some idea of what the labour market will be and what will be available before making any decisions. What happens to AP will also be a factor.

I'm sure his focus right now is deciding what to do with the restricted free agents and making decisions on option players such as Dags. I wouldn't be so quick to dump PD, an offseason of skating school and hard training could work wonders and he could come back to haunt us.

That said, I think that Yannic Perrault and Sundstrum are useful players if they can be re-signed relatively cheaply.

Whatever happens I am confident in Gainey's judgement.

  17. Fan Puck33: you are wrong about the terrorists being happy if the US leaves Iraq. The US presence in Iraq is the biggest boost to terrorists yet. It gives credence to the fundementalists claims that the USA wants to dominate the Muslim world and every civilian casulty and every image of tortured prisoners just adds to it. GB provided terrorists with the recruitment campain of their dreams.

I dont know what kind of advice GB was getting or if he listened to it, but as someone who has lived in the Middle East for the last five years I can tell you that anyone who has lived in the ME for more than five minutes would have predicted what happened in Iraq.

Bush is an idiot and he wanted to oust Saddam from the very first. WMD were just an excuse. It is a leaders resoponsibility to establish an exit plan before beginining this kind of action and it has been painfully clear the GB and co have been making it up and they go along.

If they had of devouted all the resources wasted in Iraq to hunting down Bin Laden and the other terrorists world opinion would still be on the side of the USA and the terror network might have been eliminated or at least seriously weakened.

GB has no credibility in the world except with Tony Blair and Sharon. His election would be a disaster for the world.

Don't take my word for it read some of Michael Moore's books, read some of the English papers from the ME. Study some history, but don't take the Republicans word for it because lying or not they obviously don't have a clue.

  18. Any word on what's up with Scott Flory?

Does anyone know a good site for Al's information because the Gazette is driving me mad?

Any chance that HB could or would give the AL's a separate forum of their own?

  19. Koivu still does not get the respect he deserves. As I noted in my post on Al Strachan, that idiot wrote that K is not an outstanding talent because he has been slowed by his lack of size and his knee injuries. I bet most NHL players wouldn't mind being slowed to a point a game pace in the play-offs. The job he did against Thorton was amazing. From the Bruins excuses; from K nothing but grit and production.
