Nice depth at least, but how many actual NHL all-stars will come from this group?

    Caufield, Hutson, Reinbacher?

I think calling Hutson a future all-star is a stretch.  I doubt very much he will be an all-star.  If he can carry his offense to the NHL, he may top out on the 2nd pair.  I really believe he's too small to be an effective top-pairing defenseman unless his stick-work defensively is something we've not seen from a defenseman yet in the NHL.  His size will get exploited vs most forwards at that level.

I was looking at it more from the overall roster construction perspective. The Habs now have depth on RD and goaltending, got rid of most of the boat anchor contracts and will have a lineup full of young players with decent talent.

They have a shot at squeaking into the playoffs if their goaltenders are healthy and perform well. If only their powerplay could produce more consistently.

    If everyone is healthy:

    Monahan-Suzuki-Caufield
    Newhook-Dach-Anderson
    HarveyPinard-Dvorak-Gallagher
    Pezzetta-Evans-Armia
    Ylönen

    Matheson-Barron
    Guhle-Savard
    Xhekaj/Harris-Kovacevic
    Wideman or Lindstrom

I think you have Barron playing too high in the lineup.  I think it's setting him up for failure to put him on the top-4 pairing in his first full year in the NHL.  Also, Harris is LHD that plays RD and LD, so it's not Harris or Kovacevic on the 3rd pairing, it'll be closer to which 2 of those 3 are better.  As for the top 4, it'll depend on the coaching staff, but I see a real chance Matheson and Savard are the top pairing and Guhle and Harris/Kovacevic are the 2nd pairing.

As much as I harped on Harris last season, I do think overall, he's better than Kovacevic.

I believe many/most have to be submitted by a certain date (usually July 1s)... so maybve he didn't update it ... or maybe they HATED it in Pittsburgh ... but most likely I expect HuGo have promised Petry he will be dealt.

It’s possible it was a “grass isn’t always greener,” situation which is what I believe you are pointing out.  He and his family may of regretted the decision to move away from Montreal.

  4. When I saw the headline for the trade, my assumption was the Price contract was involved to make the cap space work.  Really surprised on Hoffman being apart of it and Petry coming back to Montreal.

Petry’s best years were in Montreal so I can 100% see this as a rental at the deadline in hopes he bounces back in some capacity.  It also adds a veteran RD for the young kids.

Isn’t DeSmith basically a younger Allen?  Career solid backup?

The latest rumour, from TSN690 yesterday, is that Michkov does not like the idea of a 3-yr ELC and may stay in Russia until he is 24, when his ELC would only be one year.

If he doesn’t sign an ELC within 2 years, Philadelphia loses his rights.  At that point he would be put back in the draft as he would only be 20.  If by chance he isn’t put back in the draft he becomes a UFA.

I’m not sure if there’s some specific rule that may negate this if he’s signed in the KHL though.

If i remember correctly, he produced more near the end of the season when the games were completely meaningless and was useless during the first half. Personally I take production at that time of the year with a grain of salt when a team is playing out the string. He  rings nothing at all to a team if he isn’t scoring and he doesn’t score like he used to.

He was also given a lot more playing time near the end of the season from injuries.  Most of his games missed was the first half.

He also doesn’t score like he used to because Suzuki replaced his spot on the PP.  Hoffman always was more of a PP specialist.

I don’t know how we move Hoffman without retaining salary, and I can’t see anyone wanting him even with 50% retention it less he shows he can still produce.

Hoffman was 14G-20A-34P, a 0.5 PPG player last season.  At $2.25m he's more than tradable.  If it weren't for the cap situation of most teams, he would be tradable at his full cap hit.

  8. Temporary changes at Twitter because they didn’t want to pay Google $1b for their server rentals.

The big change you’re taking about is embedded tweets can’t be seen unless your logged into Twitter with the browser you’re looking at the forum on.  These embedded tweets count against you’re daily limits too.  If you’re not logged in, or over your daily limit, you won’t see tweets linked in any forum.

It’s probably better for these forum if you screenshot a tweet and post it in here as a picture until these measures by Twitter is lifted, but that’s just my opinion.

  9. A pure cap dump without giving up a sweetener and getting a return.  I think we all expected there to be salary retention, even if he was traded last year.  Better than a buyout, cap hit is only there for this season.  Win/win.

Let’s hope if there are any more trades that they keep one retention slot open for Monahan at the deadline.  With a cheap contract and the ability it retain on it, he could fit on any contending team for nearly no cap hit.  An injury free season should fetch a nice return.

As for goalies, after three picks in the draft, it sure looks like Plan A is to develop one of the prospects. I don't foresee a short-term move for a goalie given that they have Allen holding down the fort at the moment and we have yet to see what Dobes can do in Laval.

I hope they revisit acquiring Askarov.  I know it's a long shot, but Anderson, Dvorak, Hoffman and young D are things Nashville need.  I'm not saying they have any interest in any of those roster players except Anderson.

The biggest question mark in the prospect pool, as any prospect pool, is goaltending.  Would be nice to have another swing at a highly touted goalie prospect.

The Habs have a bloody impressive pipeline of D prospects right now, which might end up with three or four first-pairing level D-men. If that’s the case, the distinction between first and second pairs might not be much at all.

in terms of stylistic fit, Reinbacher could really complement Hutson nicely, whichever pair that would be.

I agree with the extremely healthy pipeline of D.  I would just caution thinking they have 3-4 first pairing guys.  I think realistically we all should be thinking they have 6-7 NHL caliber defencemen, of which 3-4 potential top-4 and hope at least 1 develops into a true first pairing guy.

I have a feeling that a couple of the defencemen that played last season won't be with the team in October.  Edmundson aside, I think one or more of the rookies may be traded for a winger or RD or possibly a goalie.

I believe Hutson could possibly hit 100 pts.  IMO that is why Hughes made the comment about Reinbacher being a #2 dman.  i.e. Hughes was saying that he will be *their* #2 dman vs just a #2 dman.  Reinbacher would be the #1 dman on most other teams.

I think you may be reading more into that comment than you realize.  Reinbacher is RHD and Hutson is LHD, like Guhle.  The only was Hutson is on the 1st pair is if he develops much better than Guhle or Reinbacher develops into a 1st pair stud shutdown guy.

Wouldn't Michkov have been the true "swing for the fences" pick? He's the guy that many scouts seem to see as a potential superstar.

By every scouting report I’ve seen Michkov is the second best player in the draft, talent-wise.

I’m glad Montreal didn’t pick him.  With him signing in Russia, I believe there’s legitimate concern that once that 3-year deal is up he may just stay in Russia.  Then nearly any other player is a better pick.

Not a habs rumor but Lucic back to Boston is talked about on tsn. I miss the rivalry when Weise and Emelin vs Lucic and Chara was going strong.

Would love to see Wifi vs Lucic.

Wifi is too big for Lucic to want to fight.  He might fight Gallagher or Caufield though.

I wonder if Newhook is part of a package going to Winnipeg 🤔

Im also curious if Newhook plays wing like Dach did, alongside Suzuki?

    Caufield - Suzuki - Newhook

    Slafkovski - Dach - Monahan

    Anderson - Dvorak - Gallagher

It feels like Christmas and tomorrow can’t get here soon enough!

Doubtful he's part of a trade to Winnipeg.  Winnipeg has accepted LA's offer enough to grant LA permission to negotiate a contract with Dubois.  Seems pretty much a done deal unless the contract negotiation breaks down, which at this point is reported to be 8x$8.5m.
