You are correct that nobody is completely untouchable, but I think the consensus (here and elsewhere that I heard/read) was that the young NHL forward and a former first round pick with second line potential was someone whose "potential" was of the "once upon a time had" context.

While that's what it could mean, it also could mean they were picked in the first round and still has second line potential.  Without knowing who it was and what was actually meant that statement, making an assumption either way is equally as inaccurate.

Is he completely untouchable or is he a guy the Habs were unwilling to sell at his lowest value when in the AHL?  I dont know the reports said either way.

I think we can say that he wont be cheap though.

Nobody is completely untouchable, but I would say Xhekaj is just as untouchable as the defencemen you listed.  While he was in the AHL Montreal was offered "a young NHL forward and a former first round pick with second line potential," according to the fourth period.  That offer was rejected, which seems like a substantial offer for Xhekaj.

Jimmy Murphy is a horrible source.

That said we are deep on D and for the right price Im sure Hughes would trade him, but hes not giving him away.  I think the only ones hes not willing to move (for the right price) are Guhle, Hutson, and Reinbacher

From previous reports, add Xhekaj to that list as well.

I think the Devils are still entertaining hopes about a playoff run so likely looking for immediate help rather than a draft pick.

Unless it's done during the draft.  At 22, he's well under control of the team.  Unless he is used as a trade chip, as you suggested, he could still be available at the draft.

The $776,667 is the 25/26 cap-hit for the second year of the buyout period ... a buyout saves the $1,533,337 on the 24/25 cap, and costs $766,667 in 25/26.

The cap hit numbers were the numbers Capfriendly had listed at Montreal's cap hit for those 2 years.

That is another option for the summer.  Not sure what is cheaper or better, retain 50% and then maybe you get something for him or a buyout. I guess it depends on the goalie market.

    From Capfriendly's buyout calculator:

A Jake Allen buyout spans 2 years, has a cost of $1,533,333 and savings of $766,667. Allen is 33 years of age at the time of the buyout; therefore, the buyout ratio is 2/3. With $2,300,000 in salary remaining, the cost is $1,533,333, and the savings are $766,667. Buyouts span twice the length of the remaining years and because there is 1 year remaining in the contract, the buyout length is 2 years. The buyout cap hit is displayed in the Cap Hit Calculations table below.

    (below is abbreviated)

    Cap hits

    24-25 - $2,316,667

    25-26 - $766,667

By those calculations, trading Allen with 50% retained for futures is better cap wise, but does use a retention slot.

I bet Allen gets put on waivers next season if Hughes can’t trade him. I don’t think anyone wants him.

Or Primeau goes somewhere in the off-season as apart of a package.

Read that Buffalo may look for a goalie in the off-season in free agency or trade for a goalie with a year left so Levi could spend a full season in the AHL.  Allen with retention is about what Buffalo would be spending in free agency.

The goalie market is weird this year.  Multiple teams are looking for goalie and there's some interesting names out there that may or may not be available.

Saros is listed there too and I'm pretty sure Nashville still wants to resign him.

Markstrom may or may not be available.

Swayman may or may not be available.

With 3 good goalies potentially available, teams don't want to commit until they know the status of at least those 3.  Allen won't get traded until the deadline.

Allen to Colorado makes sense, it's just making the other pieces and salary fit as you said. Somehow I think Johansen would be involved. There has been a lot of chatter on the Calgary chat boards about Markstrom going to Jersey but talk is cheap.

I've read those rumors too, but every one mentions cap hit is the issue for New Jersey.  I'm not sure exactly what it is about the cap hit as I'm not invested into that rumor enough to look into it.

In Montreal, they're trying to make him more of a two-way guy since they're putting him with players who most nights have no hopes of scoring.  That's a role he has never had before and the end result has been a lot of mediocrity.

The flip side to that is IF he develops a solid defensive game, he makes a great 3rd line player.  A more offensive version of Lehkonen that can play higher in the lineup if needed, but is a solid 3rd liner.  Which is a great idea, but defense is arguably the hardest thing to teach effectively.

  11. The whole situation highlights Toronto's problems.  They brought in Reaves, Domi and Bertuzzi to fix their toughness issues.  This situation happens and instead of the mentality of "we will make them pay for that," they resort to a cheapshot.  Now instead of the next game, or the end of that game, this gets repayed, it's Ottawa coming out with the motivation for the cheapshot.  Shot themselves in the foot being soft.

How often do you see the quarterback of a football team take a knee when the game is decided or a basketball team dribble out the clock when the game is decided. Maybe you are right and they should try and run up the score to antagonize the other team.

If the net is empty, it's the losing team attempting to come back, not signaling the game is over.  The reference to football and basketball are misplaced. In hockey, if the net is empty to attempt a comeback, it's fair game to score on it.  Teams don't avoid scoring on an empty net if given the chance.

When was the last time you saw a team have a breakaway on an empty net and purposely not score?

I guess we will have to disagree on this. Winding up for a slapshot was totally unnecessary and disrespectful, kind of like running up the score. It's like sending out your best power play unit in the last minute of the game with a big lead.

I don't understand this mentality.  It's was unnecessary and disrespectful? Players have made entire careers on being disrespectful and doing unnecessary things.  Teams look for pests to antagonize the other team.  That part is completely embraced and accepted by the hockey community, but heavens forbid someone slap shots a puck into an empty net.

We do need more elite talent up front, no question about that. Maybe the Winnipeg pick can be used to move up in the 1st round but rarely do you see a team trade down a few places near the top end of the draft.

When it does happen, or is proposed, it usually is part of a bigger trade, like the Subban for Draisaitl trade that fell through.  The picks aren't the main part of the trade.

I could see some draft day scenarios involving Ottawa or Columbus, with that availability of Chyrchurn or maybe Laine.  I doubt we'll be super happy with what the cost would be to acquire one of those and move up the same time.  Laine would be more realistic.

  15. In wake of Reilly cross checking Grieg in the face, TSN has a bunch of stories of idiots defending Reilly's actions, the worse being Martin Biron.  Biron went as far as saying he doesn't believe Reilly even deserves a suspension.

TSN has always been bias, but to even defend that is unacceptable.

I look at it this way....

You can pay ___ Million for your top 3 centres.

Some team might be paying 13 million for matthews and 11 for Tavares and then have to go cheap on their #3.

    Or McDavid/Draksaitl, etc

On the Habs could you pay 8 for Suzuki, 5 for Dach and 7 for mittelstadt and stjll come in cheaper and have more money for wingers and defense.

It's one way of thinking about it.  I would say though, that if you're paying a player $5m+ they shouldn't be on the 3rd line, limiting minutes and quality of teammates.  I know there are 3rd line players making $5m+, like Gallagher, but they were signed to those contracts while being under the assumption of playing top-6 roles.

Anderson on the ice for four of the five even-strength goals against. How is he still getting 15 minutes of ice time?

His element of speed and driving the puck to the net.  For a team that takes a lot of outside shots, someone driving the puck to the net is valuable.  He's ineffective once getting there, but still doing it.  Also, injuries, the bottom 6 is nearly all AHL players that aren't there because they earned their way out of Laval.  That's why he's still getting 15 minutes a night.
