Other than info received from Friedman or Dreger,  are any of these trade rumours ever real ?

If you type “Canadiens rumours” or “Habs rumours” into google you get a myriad of “fake news” or headlines on YouTube videos trying to suck you in. None of them make sense and often they are just fan-based trade proposals… or just clickbait…. Or both.

Even the French media (J-C Lavoie) had a Gallagher for Huberdeau trade proposal….. ridiculous. Like yes, we want a two and a half year salary headache to turn into a much larger four and a half year salary headache. How the crap does that help us ?

Who has the best track record for rumours on the net ? Asking for a friend.

Honestly, Bob McKenzie is about the only analyst I've never questioned.  Friedman and Dreger have good track records.  Seravelli is generally correct, but I have my own gripes with him.  Typically anyone who has some form of media platform about hockey discussing it full time, should always be questioned.  They need things to talk about to stay relevant, and rumours are interesting.

The biggest problem is it's very easy to discredit a rumour, and the person presenting it, if it the rumour never materializes.  Eklund gets a ton of flak for almost never being right, but he has broken a few rumours earlier than anyone else, showing there is at least some form of insider information there.  There's a huge possibility he mixes that credibility with things that aren't true causing this as well.

I’m curious how Laine plays this year and next. I’m curious if we re-sign him or trade him at deadline next year. I’m hoping he gets his career back.

I think everyone wants him to get his career back on track, he's a dynamic talent with a high skill ceiling.  As for the re-signing, it'll come down to how how he plays, how much he plays and what he wants.  While the idea of resigning Laine is great, at this point there's still too many other questions to really answer that question.

okay, fair enough… but I’d still pay up to get a first rounder by sweetening it with a pick… so, give Savard and retain half his salary and also give a third round pick to get a first round pick.

I would like to use this mountain of picks we have to get lower in the draft. So if we have to give one, I am alright with that. But I still think/hope someone will pay up without a sweetener.

You have to remember a 1st round pick is a premium.  If a team can get Savard for a 2nd, there isn't a whole lot of incentive to take a lower pick back to pay a 1st.  The only real chance at getting a 1st in return is if, at the time, Savard's value to that team is above their available 2nd round picks/prospects.  Then Montreal would have to sweeten the pot to get the 1st.

Okay… first round pick. I assume no retention. Left shot. Better production than Savard. Roughly 7 years younger. Is paid 4.7 million.

So we can’t be too far off with Savard and wanting a first round pick. Savard has more experience, shoots right. Savard is older, a bit less production. Cheaper at 3.5 million.

If we retain salary we should get there. Right shot D is more desired.

Heck, if we can get a first without retaining salary it would be great, but I think that maybe a bridge too far. But Hughes always surprises.

Even with retention a 1st round pick, or equivalent, is on the high end for Savard.  I'd expect more along the lines of a 2nd, or equivalent, for him.  It'll come down to what's available between the new year and the trade deadline in the RD department.

  5. Winnipeg reportedly offered Perfetti, McGroarty and a draft pick.  Carolina declined it.  Top-6 roster forward, 1st round prospect and an unknown pick.

If the Laine trade was an indication, Montreal probably offered Harris plus prospects not named Hutson, Reinbacher or Beck and a pick.  This is based purely on The Winnipeg offer.

With Columbus having claimed Fabbro, apparently Jiricek is the odd man out. Does he have enough potential that it would make sense to add another young (waivers-exempt!) RD to the prospect pool?

Assuming that we’re willing to give up a prospect that they would want.

I've read his potential is still there, it's more of a Drouin situation where he wants to play in the NHL and the team doesn't think he's ready, causing the rift.  I doubt he will be cheap.

Pierre McGuire said the Habs tried to trade Armia three years ago.  (Not necessarily that those attempts have continued for three years.)  This is when the current management team inherited the first season of his contract.  His value then and value now are quite different as someone on an above-market player with term to someone on an above-market deal as an expiring.

At the same time he said they've been trying to trade him for a long time.

The trade value of both Armia and Dvorak at the deadline depends largely on how they play between now and then.

Was reading today Montreal has been unsuccessfully trying to trade Armia for years.  Being in the final year of his contract will help, be I wouldn't expect anything in the way of a return for him.  He's not worth using the last retention spot on either.

Savard has been a shot blocking savage but I wish Hutson had a more offensively gifted partner.

Typically you want a player like Hutson with someone like, but better than, Savard.  The better his partner is defensively, the more offensive freedom Hutson will have.  Like the Karlsson/Methot pairing in Ottawa a few years ago, Keith/Seabrooke in Chicago or Carlson/Alzner in Washington.  Methot, Seabrooke, and Alzner in a vacuum weren't spectacular defensemen and none of which were particularly good offensive players.

I do expect Armia to get a contract somewhere next season, I just hope it isn’t in Montreal

Armia's next contract will be a $1m or less, easily able to bury for any team.  At that price, I wouldn't be opposed to re-signing him.  That being said, he will probably take less than a potential offer from Montreal to have a fresh start somewhere else.

  11. 4 hours ago, Prime Minister Koivu said:

Both of them would clear waivers. Meaning nobody will even take them for free

That’s not entirely true.  A team that couldn’t afford the contract may want either of them.  It’s happened before, players clearing waivers, but a trade happening for that player because of a money in, money out situation.

  12. I would be all for sending them down, or at least waiving them, but you have to wonder if there's more going on that we are unaware of.  It also doesn't look good sending expensive contracts to the minors if you intend to call them back up again.  Typically the only reason they would be sent down if there wasn't any intention of calling them back up, like Souray or Alzner situation.  Armia last season was a bit of an anomaly.

It also tanks any value those player may have.

I few week's back I took a deep dive into NDL team rosters and any RD that may fit the Habs' needs. To be honest, Barron is better than most RDs that may be available on a trade where the Habs would not loose a core piece.

Barring the fact that a LD for RD lateral movement is extremely rare, you are right that there aren't many available RD that are comparable.  Andersson, Pesce, Durzi, Carlo, and Cernak are loosely comparable, but I doubt any of them will be available.

I think most here think he is the perfect 4th line centre for this team. It all depends on how much you want to spend on a 4th line center?  Once you get around the 3M/year mark, it starts to seem a little expensive.

Even $2m is getting on the expensive side of a 4th line center, unless they have a niche quality, like faceoffs or penalty killing.

  15. All very valid points, but it's the growing pains of this roster.  Matheson isn't a top pair minute eating guy and Savard is a 5th/6th defenceman on most teams.  They are 2 of the best 3 defencemen on this team, with Guhle being the 3rd and not in that particular order.  Hutson's offense is amazing, but his defense isn't there yet to put him into the top-3.  These are the growing pains of having 4 of 6 inexperienced defencemen.

He needs to do the same peripheral awareness training Slafkovsky did last year.

That awareness also comes from teammates.  A good teammate will attempt to warn you about incoming players and hits if they suspect you don't know it's coming.  It also would be on Guhle as well whether he heard or paid any attention to the warnings.  It does seem very clear that on the ice, there they are still lacking communication at times.

If he does get fired we should hire him IMMEDIATELY. He would get picked up right away.

Sadly there's not many bilingual coaches on the market, so I agree we should snatch him up.  We are becoming the Bruins dumping grounds for coaches though.
