  1. Note that MT already coached a Stanley Cup Finalist, although he lost the series.

What does it take as a coach to make a team a Stanley Cup champion? Whatever it is, the following guys had it.

    [...]

Some of those names are well respected. Others, less so. Nevertheless, they've all won. Are they all better than MT?

I don't know really who would be the coach that would have what it takes to take the CH to the cup finals and win. It is not all on the coach, but there needs to be a special dynamic between coach and team to bring the team to that higher level.

I just think that MT will run out of steam by the time the team has the makeup of a contender. I believe he could still coach them to the cup final, but I do not think he is the coach to bring them to the level required to win the cup.

Let's see if this year he can make believers of us that still doubt his ability.

  2. I think Therrien will complete his contract, but won't see an extension or second term. I think he was hired with the goal of bringing up the rookies and keeping us competitive; but I do not think he has the record and coaching style to make a team a cup stanley champion. Maybe a contender, with all the pieces together: a finalist at best, but not a winner.

I am really happy on how he as stablish that "mental toughness" and attitude with regards to "adversity". The team has shown up to play and seems well prepared.

Like most fans, I do not agree some of his decisions: Brière's handling, surprise Budaj starts, not playing Galchenyuk at center more often, etc But he has done well, despite some questionable calls.

  3. I remember the habs won the cup with a very young Chelios and Kurvers who were practically a rookie,

Yes, I almost posted that the other day. I was thinking the same. My only concern is that it seem slike Beaulieu seems to have a bot of an entitlement... One of the french commentators on the (I think it was Danny Dube) was mentioning how Beaulieu seems to think he doesn' have anyting more to learn in the AHL and that is why he has not been giving it 100% lately.

I have not checked how Beaulieu has been playing inthe minors, but this comment would explain why he has not been called up.

  4. I'd like to give Eller a chance on the wing with Galchenyuk and send Bourque home. If he doesn't work out, give the shot to Bournival.

Leave white on the 4th line and if Eller is successful as a 3rd line winger, have White, Moen, weisse and Bournival fight for the 4th line role

yes, for giving Eller a shot at wing; but I would still want to give Bourque a chance because you can always swap Eller and bourque depending on who responds. It gives something like this:

    Pacioretty-Desharnais-Vanek

    Eller-Plekanec-Gallagher

    Bourque-Galcheynuk-Gionta

    Moen-White-Weise

Whith this lineunp, you can play musical chairs with the 3 bottom-line left-wings

  5. What game were you watching? The Habs had one of their best offensive periods in the first, and finished with almost 50 shots. This was nothing like the Detroit game from a couple weeks back where we only showed up at the end of the game.

Yes, they almost scored in the first and gave a great effort; bu I was so frustrated to watch them miss so many chances. It was a good game until they collapsed.

  6. I think that the Habs came out really strong in the first period and should have buried a bunch of chances but they didn't. Ottawa was able to capitalize on their fewer number of scoring chances. Price really only had a chance on the Smith goal, and other than that thought he played well. I felt he had an extra layer of confidence within him but yet also that this game didn't mean near as much as the last ones he played. The team showed heart and that's all you can ask from your players. MT probably had a chuckle with the boys afterwards and I'm sure the mood in the room is positive.

illWill I agree, jut to say, I am also surprised how p***d off some are, after a win.

For me, this team is not winning the cup this year unless Price stands on his head all playoffs. So I try to focus on the progress of the young core: PK, Price, Eller, Gally, Chucky, Patches, etc So this win is important because it will serve as a reference to these players to never give up, like the Rangers game years back, And to Eller and others to drive to the goal to score, like MT keeps telling them.

I still don't see Gionta, Bouillon and Weaver coming back next year; but it is not fair to be sooo critical of them when they actually delivered. It is one of those games they can remember next year, as they co over their career as a Hab; and as a fan, I want to enjoy that moment with these two heart and soul guys for the team (Gio, and Cube)

Now, on to Buffalo and Vanek's homecoming :)

  7. Game of the Year. Best case scenario, they rally around this game. Worst case scenario, Frankie B for 16-23 straight games.

The new lines worked. They had chances all night. The minuses on the Kid Line are worrying though.

I smell some fines from the Senator's presser.

Loved the comeback, but hated that I had to wait 55 minutes to see anything positive from the Habs. MacLean's diving gesture when Markov drew the penalty was classless, I have lost any respect I had for the Walrus.

I was happy with the lines, and agreed with the RDS commentator's observation that the team has been well prepared in the last few games because they have come out flying in the first periods but that they were giving up after. To add to the critics of the coaching, I would say that Gallant is the one who is to blame since he's the one always talking to players when they come back to the bench. He is surely demotivating them and constantly criticizing any mistakes they make

Bouillon and Subban have played together in the past, and they did fine before. I am not too worried about the defense combinations, I think there will be a lot of rotation of 3rd pairings and 4th lines until the playoffs to make sure everyone is in game shape going in.

As a HABs fan living in Ottawa, this game was just pure joy to watch. I hope is all uphill from here :D

  8. Despite all the negativity on this board, I think the Habs are doing a good job preparing for this.

    1) they have been bringing AHL'ers with expiring contract up to the NHL on a regular basis

    2) they have tweaked the NHL club by adding UFAs without ging up too much

    3) they have not rushed their prospects up

I think the following UFAs walk: Weaver, Murray, Bouillon, Parros, Gionta

I think they will resign all their RFAs, and they will give a decent chance to make the NHL roster to those that cannot be sent down.

This should free roster spots for Tinordi, Beaulieu, Pateryn; and it should free enough cap space for Suban, Markov, Vanek; but I have not checked that.

Now, if only we could move Briere and Moen this summer

  9. I like BCHabs4Ever lines. All you have to do is flip Galchenyuk and Vanek around. Galchenyuk hasn't played much right wing but I can't see him having trouble adapting. I'd just tweak with:

    Patches - DD - Gallagher

    Vanek - Briere - Galchenyuk

    Prust - Plekanec - Gionta

    Moen - Eller - White/Weiss

If we went with the EGG line again I like Stogey's idea of Vanek with Patches and DD. Stack the top line.

I also agree with Stogey's. We need three lines that can score, but it is time to give Galcheynuk a chance at center and we need to make room for Prust.

I know it won't happen, but I wish we saw this:

    Pacioretty-Desharnais-Vanek

    Eller-Plekanec-Gionta

    Prust-Galcheynuk-Gallagher

    Moen-White-Weise

(Bourque, Briere, Parros,Bournival) --> with these player rotating on the 4th line

    ===

    Emelin-Subban

Markov-Patryn --> the last few games of the season may be a good time to try this,

    Murray-Tinordi

    (Bouillon,Weaver)

  10. seems they are playing like when Parros first started, expecting "him" to do all of the policing and stopping being aggressive. With Vanek. it seems like the time is expecting Vanek to carry the scoring on his shoulders for the team... Wednesday's game should give a better idea of what to expect.

  11. When all are healthy, I think 3 of the 4 scratches are pretty obvious - Parros, Bournival, and Weise. I think that last one will be a bit of a rotation.

Against the sharks, Weise may have been better than half the club... they looked flat. But once everyone is healthy I see one obvious scratch (Parros), and two that should play if they are going full tilt: Weise, Bournival. That should make Bourque, Eller, Moen and Briere sit if they continue to coast/float out there

  12. all this trade means to me is that the staff and organization are not sold on Tinordi or Beaulieu down the home stretch, both will finish off the season in Hamilton, and Murray - Weaver fill the bottom pairing,

unless there is more to come...

exactly my thinking. And with Drewiske being sent down, this is a right D depth replacement for Diaz. I think this settles this years changes on defense. With Bouillon and Weaver not returning,.. don't know why it reminds me of Sopel and Mara ?!

Now if only we could get a physical top 9 RW with some scoring for Moen and/or Bourque. That would do it for me this year.

  13. I will be surprised if much changes. But based on how they have been bringing up D-men from Hamilton and the waiver of Drewiske, I would not be surprised if they move Bouillon or a Bulldog D to either make room for Pateryn or to bring a right shooting D prospect to Hamilton.

Up front, with Weise's acquisition and the reliable play of Bournival, Moen becomes expendable over Bourque. Bourque is inconsistent but can generate more offense, an OK player for the third line.

I do not think they will shop Briere nor Gionta, but will move them if the return makes the team better in the mid/long term. I do not think they'll move them for picks. Which means that I believe they will let Gionta's contract expire.

  14. Of course it will affect the Olympians. But I think if will be mostly beneficial to most of the team, specially our smaller forwards who will get some rest: Briere, Gionta, Desharnais, Gallagher.

It will also help those bruised or injured: Prust, Bournival, Moen, Galcheynuk, Drewiske, and maybe Georges.

Weise will have some time to settle in and, with the rest of the team, he will have some extra practices to work on the team's system. I think he makes Moen redundant.

    ===

I liked how MB was bringing up Thomas, Leblanc, Nattinen before the trade; checking the right-handed forwards in Hamilton before making a move. If there is room, I think we will see some of the same after the Olympics and before the trade deadline, to assess what can be done to get this team closer to a contender without giving away key assets.

  15. I don't think that there is a point to dismantle this year's team because some players are not of caliber on a "Cup contender"; as far as my expectations for this year go, DD is just fine as a placeholder until Galchenyuk earns that position alongside Patches.

Next year is when I expect to see a center line of Pleks, DD/Chucky, Eller, White, and at some point a decision to keep Eller at center or to move him to LW, for example to the left of Pleks...

But this year's DD is just fine, and his production during the playoffs this year will show what he is really worth.
