I didn't think it needed to be stated that it would come with a pre-negotaited contract extension, as almost every other trade of this sort, but that's on me for not explicitly stating that.  Rumor is he is at $11.5m AAV for an undisclosed amount of year right now.  I would safely bet he will settle around the $11m AAV mark.

Suzuki hasn't had a PPG season his entire career(0.78 PPG), possibly this will be his first.  At 24 years old, there is nothing to indicate Suzuki is elite level, let alone a franchise center.  He's no doubt a good top line or great send line center, which his career numbers clearly indicate.  That comment is something you would jump over if someone else said it.

I defended my point and its based not just on offence but his analytics that show selke level defence

    Hes grown every year

He also scored 66 points while spending half the season with Harvey-pinard, Armia, and others rotating on his wings at age 23.

Agree, although I'd try to barter them down to Wifi, LOL.

More likely they insist on Suzuki plus.

I don't quite get this turn in the thread, though. Yes, Friedman (an impeccable source) has reported that the Canes but a VERY serious offer on the table for Petterson. But the Canucks leveraged the threat of accepting that offer to force Pettersson back o negotiations. That means, in effect, that Pettersson has conceded that he wants to stay in Vancouver, and accepts that he will need to negotiate during the season, which he was loath to do. The general media chatter here in Van is that it is now a question of WHEN, not if, Petey signs - and for how much term. (12 million per seems to be the agreed-upon number).

All told, then, it is much less likely that we can prise him away from Vancouver than it was three or four days ago.

I agree completely.  Was just pointing out the value of an elite centre.

That said we might have one already.

Suzuki now sits 10th in the NHL for points by centres (12th on NHL.com but Reinhart and Barzal are playing wing this year no matter what NHL.com lists them as).

Meanwhile Paul Maurice said yesterday that he was impressed with Suzuki and said he plays a two way game like Barkov.  Could be just the opposing coach praising a guy, but I think people are starting to notice that his defensive game is getting to Selke quality.  Barkov is already acknowledged in that tier.

So we may have a true franchise level centre on our hands.

Just to be clear, I'm not saying I've given up on CC becoming a heavy-duty elite scorer. I agree that his game has become more complete. Yes, the surgery was a factor. And heck, he is on pace for 30 goals pro-rated, so it's not like his season has been bad.

I've just never seen him as topping out as an "elite 2nd-line W." I want him to become an elite 1st-line goal-scorer who scares the sh*t out of other teams. I'm not talking Auston Matthews, but definitely a reliable 40+ goal guy. Those are lofty expectations, but CC has it in him IMHO.

I also still think he can be a 40 goal guy.  He has that level of skill and just needs to get the shoulder back to 100%

I agree that something closer to  60/40 type split would be perfect. Hopefully Fowler is good enough to make Monty the 40. Monty has been great but hoping Fowler is even better

Goalies are voodoo but Fowler has been as good as we could have hoped this season.

I hope Roy goes back. He has NHL potential but he would have a better development opportunity in LVL than in MTL

    Disagree completely.

Other than being papered down so that he can play in the AHL playoffs he needs to stay in Montreal for every NHL game he can play

    Hes getting 2nd line minutes.

Hes succeeding in those minutes, and his analytics show that he is actually helping his linemates at both ends. Hes helped both Newhook and Armia to better 5v5 results.

Hes scoring points and playing a 200 foot game.

In fact its not crazy to think Roy-Dach-Newhook is a line next season. And even if they find a better winger for that line, at the very least, he should be a third liner next year.

Keep him up as long as possible.

Assuming Gallagher is on a "therapy day" ... does Roy go back to help Laval, do Pezzetta or Ylonen go on waivers, or is there a trade in which one more player goes "out" than comes "back"?

Gallagher was apparently hurt against florida.

Seeing Dobes and Fowler up there like that is encouraging. We need at least one of them to become a NHL starter at some point

I think that the idea is one becomes part of a tandem with Monty.  I dont know that pure starter is the way to go anymore unless you find a Carey Price level guy.

6th in TOI amongst regular Ducks-D ... Leafs going C-H-E-A-P to "improve" their defence corps.

Treliving watched the Ducks, one of the worst defensive teams in the league, over the past two seasons and said "yeah, give me half their defence"

    Benoit, Klingberg, Lybushkin

He didnt even get the good D like Gudas or Jensen

Bit early for post-mortems, but off the top of my head I’d say

    POSITIVES

-Suze emerging as a legitimately elite 2-way C

-Slaf’s growth into a serious top-6 FW, with more to come

-Monty solidifying his standing as a legit #1 G

    -Guhle solidifying his game

-Huge pro season by Mailloux in the minors

-Great season by Monahan, followed by solid trade return

    NEGATIVES

    -Caufield not being elite

-Ridiculous injury to Dach, plus the resulting doubts re: his durability

    -Massive Newhook injury

    -Regression by Kovacevic

-Vets struggling, especially JA and maybe Allen

The top two positives and negatives all concern the young core. Frustrating that we can’t bump more of those into the “positive” column.

    I disagree on Caufield.

We've already seen that he's an elite level goal scorer.  That isn't gone.  Its' been said all season that his shot doesn't have the same velocity as last year.  This is normal for the shoulder surgery he had.  In other players who had the same surgery, the velocity returned 18 months post surgery, which lines up at the start of training camp.

While his shot was elite last year, he was also a one-trick pony.  What has really improved in his game is his playmaking and his play without the puck.  While the playmaking was a liability, its now a strength.  Where he was a liability defensively, he's gotten to the point where he may not be a positive, but he's not a negative either.

Given all of that, he still is projecting as a franchise level, first line winger.  Let's remember he's just 23.   Nick Suzuki is two years ahead of him in terms of drafts (2017-2019) and still improving, so I'm not down on him at all.

The other issue is Newhook.  yes he had the long injury, but he's proven to be a top-6 capable player when healthy and that's a plus for the team in my mind too.

Say what you want about +/-, but I always believed it was a relevant statistic when it comes to egregious outliers. E.g., if I'm -25 and everyone else on my team is a +, that is probably telling us something meaningful about my suckage.

Or its saying that you face tough opposition, and often are on the ice for the 6 on 5 with teams scoring ENGs against you a lot, or goalies have somehow been terrible when you are on the ice.

My whole point is why even look at it, when there are plenty of websites that will give you xGF%.  If you are actually sucking, it will show up in that stat (also with reference to the rest of the team).  If the +/- is uniquely weird cause of something out of your control, then that will also show up.

xG is so much better cause it counts many more events and a big sample size is less likely to be wrong than a small sample size which is +/- for an individual player.

Perhaps it isn't but I would like to see what this team would look like with a healthy Dach for a year. Maybe that is too much to hope for.

I think they are around a 500 team (82 points or so) which is what they were trending as pre Monahan trade.  Dach probably provides about the same as what Monahan was, maybe a little better

Its still a big jump to the 95+ points it takes to make the playoffs.  Need to add another difference making forward even after getting Dach back IMO

Anyone know the stats on when 14/22 put up their points during a game?

i like both players so this is not me knocking them but my eyes seems to believe these two (particularly 14) seem to be amassing a significant portion of their points when the game is essentially out of reach, late in game, down by a couple.

Anyone have any opinion / info on this?

I’m curious, but not enough so to do the research myself.

My theory is that once opponent’s ease off on offensive pressure and take a more passive defensive approach to protect a lead is when 14/22 seem to get their best looks, sustained o zone pressure, ultimately points.

They obv create earlier in games as well, but the eye test tells me they cash in more when trailing (although I suppose they are always trailing…)

My worry is that if this is so, will they ever be able to produce early and often enough to be winners instead of happy to be competitive?

There is nothing to suggest that their points come late in games that are already lost.  Nothing.

  13. MSL isnt wrong though.  The advanced stats show the team is playing better during this losing streak than they were playing before.

The biggest difference is that the goaltending has fallen off.  For about a month now, Montembault isnt pulling off heroics hes done earlier in the season.  Allen has been terrible, and Primeau has played about the same as he did before but he is only used in limited games.
