  1. Sorry Koz... but at some point you're gonna have let go of this fantasy that Bulis belongs on the 1st line. He's a 2nd-3rd liner... and as I said I think the 3rd line has become more important than the 2nd line in today's NHL. Which is why I want Bulis there, it's where he can help the team most IMO. This team is currently so lacking in high-end talent that Bulis found his way to the top line... that doesn't mean he belongs there. He does have offensive skills, but lacks the finish of a 1st liner... that's the bottom line. Also, the 1st line is Koivu's line. Audette will eventually be replaced bu Perezhogin... these two would need some size/grit on that line to complete the package. Bulis - although he isn't small - doesn't fit the bill there either. I like Bulis a lot, but I want us to finally have a dangerous yet defensively responsible 3rd line... he's a perfect fit.
  2. You guys see Nieuwendyk be helped off the bench after the OT winner?... it was symbolic of what this game meant. NJ put everything they had into tonight... they knew tonight was their last best chance to make it to the Finals. By winning tonight the Sens have won the series. Who would have thought Roger Nielsen would be the guy to decide the series... it's his speech that finally got Ottawa going, and saving Martin's job in the process. P.S. And I'm doubly happy since I needed Ottawa to win for me to have a shot at winning the playoff pool. :-^

Well last time I checked Vladdy will decide whether he signs or not... the Expos or MLB have no say in the matter. But if the Expos are in the hunt and I were Vladdy, I'd accept a 1-year deal just so the club isn't forced to trade me at the deadline and I can help the Xpos make it this year. In the end it's all up to Vlad.
  4. Welcome aboard Westcoast...
  5. I'd favor getting a 2nd mid 1st rounder than trading up... I'd be happy with Phaneuf/Bernier
  6. If Juneau & Dackell go - either way they soon will - what will our 3rd line look like? Well Kilger has played centre much more than Bulis... and Bulis has said he really prefered playing wing where he could use his speed more. So why not simply do: Bulis-Kilger-Sundstrom ? Would make more sense to me... and Kilger would have the size AND speed to cover the bigger centers in the East. Due to Kilger's chronic lack of aggression I wouldn't miss his presence in the corners much either. And the fact we have 2 natural centers on that line is always nice when our guys gets thrown out the faceoff circle. My only concern about Kilger is does he have the required defensive awareness to cover the opposition's top line. P.S. If I were to convert anyone to centre, it would be Hossa. He too, like Bulis, is a natural center, and to me he seems completely out of place at LW... he was completely invisible when given regular duty on the 2nd line for the last 15 games while Ribeiro & Zednik were lighting it up. He also doesn't have that "edge" I like my wingers to have, his more passive style is perfect for the center... he'd be much better if he went back there. And he's VERY good defensively, which I did notice during his offensive no-show to end the season. Bulis - Hossa - Sundstrom or even Bulis - Hossa - Ward would be a good 3rd line... capable of being an offensive threat as well as responsible defensively. These days the 3rd line (or "shut down line") is more important than the 2nd line, which is why I favor upgrading it. Look at Madden's line for NJ... single-handedly shutting down the opposition's top line AND producing most of the offense at the same time. That's the kind of 3rd line we need here given how Koivu's line simply can't handle the other #1 lines head to head. What's left for the top 2 lines you will ask? Ryder - Koivu - Audette Zednik - Ribeiro - Ward Not much I know, which is why I wouldn't mind going with Kilger for now... then Hossa eventually as 3rd line center. As Perezhogin, Higgins, & whoever we pick this year come up our top 2 lines will look better and better but our 3rd line would be set... and to me the 3rd line, the goalie, and special teams are the key to winning in today's NHL. Feel free to discuss
  7. For next year I see: - more offense: Hossa/Ribs instead of Gilmour/Petrov, Audette/Perreault/Czerk can only go up from here (if they're still here), Koivu/Zed/Bulis in same ballpark. - better defense: Souray/Komi/Hainsey? for whole year over Traverse/Dykhuis/Breezer - improved grit: Dwyer,Souray,Komi, healthy Rivet,Ward... Hossa also improves size on top lines. A healthy McKay could help more there too (compared to how much he helped last year, not hard to improve on that). - better goaltending: Theo just has to be. - better team chemistry: CJ coach from start of year takes control of team, a little less over-crowded with Gilmour/Petrov gone (hopefully more will go before start of year), unhappy Hackett gone, Breezer gone. - better coaching from the start of the season: CJ's first training camp to make team his own. So I see improvement in all areas... And yet that doesn't mean we'll make the playoffs, we definitely can... but we can definitely miss out too. Atlanta/NYR are two more teams that should contend for the playoffs and should be much improved over this year... plus all the playoff teams. So who knows if we'll make the playoffs, but we will be a better team next year. Then again... if we dump some of our depth to save $$ and then unlike last year the injury bug hits a top player like Koivu for example, well good luck chum. That's why they play the games, in the end anything can happen... just look at the Ducks/Wild. :ghg:
  8. No problem, welcome aboard. As for the Perreault/Ribeiro debate... one more thing I'd like to mention is that although teams aren't exactly looking to add to their payroll in the present environment, since Perreault's contract expires before the new CBA it actually makes him more attractive to other teams IMO. I hope both Juneau (2M) & Perreault (3M) are dealt... but what are the chances of that. That would be 5M gone right there, plus Breezer's 4M, we still don't know if Czerkawski (2.6M) will be back either... although I'm hearing not. We'd be right about at the 40-42M payroll level GG wants. That'll depend on how much he have to pay on potential buyouts, and if we'll end up dealing some of them for equally pricey players (ex: Tverdovsky makes 3.6M... not much saved from Breezer's 4M) Bouillon might not be re-signed at all. Audette will probably dictate whether we have a good year or bad, if he can play 100% like he did before the injury then we're ok, but if he stinks like last year again... oh boy. He still has 2 years left on his contract... Perezhogin set to take his place when he's ready. This will another "in between" year for the Habs, but not as ugly than last year IMO. I'll start up that discussion on another thread.
  9. Well I was refering to guys we would pick if we trade up to the 1-3 pick... Bernier wouldn't apply there. What I would like is for us to aquire another first rounder on top of the 10th we currently have.. so we could pick Bernier and a guys like Phaneuf for example. I rather have two mid first rounders than one top 3 pick. Two 1st rounders and two 2nd rounders in a deep draft would really give our prospect depth a shot in the arm... :/)
  10. Since I haven't seen any of the prospect play with my own eyes I can't have a real opinion on who we should draft and whether it's really worth it to trade up. I can just go by the numerous reports & rankings available on the web, and frankly that's about as effective as driving with your eyes closed. Wherever we pick & whoever we pick, hopefully he turns out well... and isn't one of the requisite busts that exist in every draft.

Not a bad week for me... I had M. Shumacher, Button, JV, and Ferrari. :-^ If not for the bad luck of a 20 second ruined pit stop for Barichello he would have finished 2nd, and if JV's car hadn't stalled during hte 2nd pit stop he had 5th place in the bag. It could have have been a nearly perfect week, but it was still pretty successful.... and now, a 2 week wait for the next race
  12. So after Lucas seeing corruption rob him of his title in Germany, another champion fighting out of Quebec :que: got screwed. This time the best the bought/prejudiced judges could do for their local stud was give him a draw he didn';t deserve... this sport makes me :puke: Thankfully Lucas & Dorin have been making some decent $$$ lately and both have the opportunity to have a rematch to make things right. Personally I could never be a boxer, the shear frustration of having a few corrupt old geezers tell me I lost a fight I clearly won would drive me absolutetly nuts Anybody who knows anything about boxing knows our 2 guys are still the Champs :king:
  13. Samsonov is damaged goods and that's why Boston is ready to deal him... he has a nasty wrist injury, and that type of injury is something you want to stay away from. Pronger missed a year, Souray has been in limbo forever, Rivet has had his bad wrist for years now... I wouldn't do that deal if I were Florida. Moreover Boston doesn't need to make the deal with Florida, as Fleury likely won't be taken 1st or 2nd... I'd say 3-6. We know Florida doesn't need Fleury with Luongo in their net, and if for example the Habs would manage to trade up they wouldn't take him either. Boston must be afraid a team interested in Fleury might get Florida's pick, so might aswell go after it themselves to be sure. I hope they don't get him, I don't want Boston having one of the many "local guy" quebecer goalies :que: who always come up big against the Habs. :hlogo: And as for the Habs trading up, I don't care which pick they'd potentially trade up to as long as we get Staal/Horton... so our center position would be set for the future. :-^
  14. More on Gainey and how his contract with the Stars expires in June... guess he'd wait 'til after his contract expires before announcing his eventual taking over of the GM duties in Montreal if the rumors are true. http://www.rds.ca/cgi-bin/nouvelles?site=r...on&sport=#80464 We'll have to be patient.. :z P.S. Think Martin will keep his job if Ottawa is bounced by NJ, especially the way they've come out with no emotion so far? I had heard AS would go after if he became available, even if he had just signed CJ.... but will AS still be GM come June? Ahh, so many unknowns... :?- [Edited on 17-5-03 by Habs77]
  15. You're talking like it's not already the case... since CJ has come in Koivu's line HAS been playing the top lines already. I'm not crazy about it either, but instead of having a Juneau-lead 3rd defensive line with nobody to cover... perhaps Perreault could benefit from lesser coverage and provide offense from the 3rd line like we haven't seen in years. Like I said, Sundstrom is a defensive specialist who can also produce offensively... then you could have Ward to add some size to that line. Like I said... it's only for 1 year, and it's the safest way to go given our other options IMO. Lineup could look like this for next year: (not great, but realistic) Bulis-Koivu-Audette Hossa-Ribeiro-Zednik Sundstrom-Perreault-Ward Dwyer-Kilger-McKay [Edited on 17-5-03 by Habs77]
  16. If Juneau were to be dumped, Perreault would centre the 3rd line. Unlike MT, CJ likes sending out Koivu vs. the opponent's #1 line... so having a checking line is not as critical. And Perreault would be playing with capable defensive players like Sundstrom. I'd still prefer to have one, but for one year I could live with Koivu/Ribs/Perreault as the top 3 centers. If Ribs can't cut it, or if an injury occurs, we'd still have 2 centers capable of playing the top 2 lines. And someone like Kilger could come up and centre the 3rd line if that happens (and Gratton comes up to center 4th line). As for the PK in Juneau's absence (Dackell gone too btw)... we still have Sundstrom, Bulis, Kilger, Hossa who can play that well... and CJ also likes using the Koivu/Zednik combo on PK. Like I said, which ever way we go our center situation will :puke: next year. P.S. If we trade up and grab Staal/Horton in the draft... we'll be set at center: Koivu-Higgins-Staal/Horton. That would be nice, and obviously that will mean no Perreault or Ribeiro in our future. :-^
  17. Here's the way I see it. There are different ways of looking at it: - money: We have a team that has to cut payroll with the new CBA coming up, Perreault costs 3M per while Ribeiro makes under 1M. - trade value: That's a tough one, one is still unproven & the other has shown his limitations, costs more and will be a pending UFA.... in terms of value I'd tend to hang on to the one who's value is more likely to appreciate with time: the kid. - future plans: Which one fits in our future plans?... the answer is neither. Koivu is our #1 center, Higgins who is own the way will more likely be given a #2 role... I doubt we'll give him #3 duty to try and contain the opponent's top line right off the bat. The 3rd centre (besides Koivu & Higgins)will need to be someone who can handle the defensive role... Perreault & Ribs are both offensive minded and neither could fill that role. So keeping Perreault is the safer short term solution... whereas by keeping Ribs you give him the opportunity to surprise you and stick with the team, or at the very least by playing on the 2nd line all year his numbers will go up and so will his trade value if you want to trade him later. :hlogo: So since I don't want to re-sign Perreault after this year, he costs 3M per & we have a new CBA on the way, I'd trade him. With teams more money conscious after the new CBA, cheap kids like Ribeiro will be much more attractive on the trade market.... plus as I said he'll also have gained value by playing regularly for a whole year for the 1st time. If I trade one, I trade Perreault. But I'd look at keeping both and dumping Juneau instead... he has a bad back, provides ZERO offense and even his defensive ability is going downhill fast. And he costs 2M, he's in the last year of his contract too. Which ever way we go... the center position will be a weak link next year. Nothing new there.

You too? hehe By the time the media starts talking about F1 every 2 weeks it's too late to make any changes and I'm screwed. 2 weeks between races is just too long to garner any sustained interest in the pool... makes me wanna :puke: It just happens I didn't want to change anything, so I got lucky. And technically shouldn't a discussion about a pool be in the "other" section? :contract: I have a feeling I'll be #1 in the pool on monday morning :king:
  20. He was offered 2 years ago when Kovalchuck was the #1 pick... not last year, that I know of anyway. Not for the #1 pick, since Florida has Luongo of course. I think the team would be better served waiting a year or two to see how Theo does the next year or two. By winning the Hart Theo is getting paid at a premium, and if any sort of salary cap comes with the new CBA in '04 Garon might become an economical alternative providing he shows he can be just as good. Theo would also get a better return than Garon IMO... Theo is more of a proven commodity at this point, and well the HArt speaks for itself. Well just a few months ago he cleared waivers... sure his value has risen since, but how much his trade value has risen I'm not sure. As I said Florida doesn't need Garon in the least.... and if puck7x is saying a Florida scout was at the Bulldogs game the other night we need to look there for the "prospect' that would be included in the deal. Probably Hossa or Hainsey... I doubt Ryder has that much value, and I gotta believe Komisarek is simply off-limits. With the 10th pick I'd take the best available guy... and I'd try to get a third 1st rounder by packaging our two 2nd rounders. Three 1st rounders in the deepest draft in recent memory would be a nice way for AS to redeem himself... or at least try to :-^
  21. 3 shutouts in a row... nice But shutouts are a team stat to me... not just the goalie. Obviously Giggy has been great but the team in front of him have been solid since the 2nd half. I'll be watching the 4th game just to see if they can go a whole series without allowing a goal. Even after Minny's amazing run... talk about a rough way to end your year

This team won't be able to afford any help at the deadline.. they'll have to do it on their own. Their only shot at getting some help is if El Duque recovers fom surgery in time to help the team in late August... or in the playoffs if we make it that far. The biggest concern is that this is Vlady's last year on his contract :c< ... and if he refuses to sign an extension the team might be forced to trade him at the deadline... how ugly would that be. :nono: [Edited on 15-5-03 by Habs77]
  23. Was apparently bought out by the Stars for his last season: - hopefully as with Robitaille we'll stay far away from him - another Gainey signing that didn't work out, just food for thought while Gainey rumors are swirling in Montreal. I'll still take Gainey over AS though... I rather have AS concentrate of scouting. [Edited on 14-5-03 by Habs77] [Edited on 17-5-03 by Habs77]
