  4. October 17, 2003 Plenty of options for Comrie TheFourthPeriod.com The Oilers haven’t received one substantial offer for holdout Mike Comrie, although, according to the Edmonton Sun, GM Kevin Lowe has entertained a handful of inquiries about No. 89. The newspaper suggests the Atlanta Thrashers, Florida Panthers, Montreal Canadiens and New York Rangers could all be possible destinations for the 23-year-old centerman. Such players as Marc Savard of Atlanta, Niklas Hagman or Matt Cullen of Florida, Mike Ribeiro of Montreal, and Jamie Lundmark of the Rangers could be send the other way. The Sun cancels out the possibility of Comrie being dealt to Anaheim or Nashville, while New Jersey general manager Lou Lamoriello denies any interest he has in Comrie. oh man i dont like this! first of all i dont like giving up ribero and i find comrie is a loser in the dressing room! what do u guys think??? :?- Edited : To fix misleading title (Habs MENTIONED by newspaper , it doesnt mean they are interested , they are just a possible destination that the newspaper is speculating on) [Edited on 2003-10-18 by puck7x]

  10. October 11, 2003 Youth movement moving slowly By Arpon Basu The Montreal Canadiens are obviously having trouble grasping the concept of a youth movement. When general manager Bob Gainey took the job this summer, he said there was a need to get the young talent in the organization on the ice. He specifically mentioned AHL stalwart Jason Ward and hulking defenseman Mike Komisarek as two players he had noticed. He even bought out the contracts of the ineffective Randy McKay and Mariusz Czerkawski to create spots for some new blood. But here we are at the start of the season, and Ward is penciled in to play out of position at center on the fourth line, while there is a logjam of veteran defensemen in front of Komisarek on the right side, namely Patrice Brisebois, Craig Rivet and Stephane Quintal. Gainey must realize his dreams of a young, hard-working team are on hold for this season, largely because of former GM Andre Savard's personal game of Who Wants to be a Millionaire. Over the last two years, in an attempt to stem the tide of rebuilding and in reaction to a rash of injuries that befell the team two years in a row, Savard inked high-priced veterans Yanic Perreault and Joe Juneau, and re-signed Brisebois to a ridiculous three-year (plus a team option), $13 million contract. He also brought in Donald Audette at $3 million a year via the trade route, and handed players like Andreas Dackell and Karl Dykhuis million-dollar deals. Even Marcel Hossa, a talent who remains unproven, is a millionaire. LOL! One look at the Habs season-opening 5-2 loss in Ottawa gives a good idea of how the organization's hands are tied. Montreal's best offensive player on the night was easily Mike Ribeiro, who, in captain Saku Koivu's absence, is centering the top line between Hossa and Richard Zednik. Yet Ribeiro, 23, and Hossa, 22, were the only players under 25 on the top three lines, and head coach Claude Julien will have to find room for Ribeiro in a veteran-laden lineup when Koivu returns from a knee injury. Ron Hainsey was a surprise starter after a so-so training camp, and came through with a goal off a Juneau feed on a nice backdoor cut to tie it 1-1 in the first period. He also logged 18:59 of ice time and didn't look the least bit out of place, finishing the game at plus-1. Meanwhile the veterans didn't show that much intensity. Audette led the team with five shots on goal, but was also a minus-2, as were linemates Perreault and Jan Bulis. But the 25 year-old Bulis was far more effective in the third period on a line with Ward and Michael Ryder, who spent the first two periods playing with Gordie Dwyer. It's not wise to read too much into the fact Ryder led the team in pre-season scoring, but the 23 year-old from St. John's, Newfoundland brings elements the Canadiens sorely lack, like a willingness to battle in the corner and go to the net hard. He also has a lightning-quick release on a heavy shot, and likes to throw his body around. The problem here is that the Canadiens are paying far too much to players they would rather not have, so those players have to perform if Gainey is to have any hope of shedding some dollars. In order to perform, you need ice time. So, for the time being at least, Ryder and Ward will have to wait while Audette and Dackell play ahead of them. The contracts of Perreault, Juneau, Dackell, Niklas Sundstrom, Richard Zednik and a score of others are up at the end of this year, just in time for the premiere of the new NHL reality show: Lockout. Brisebois and Audette are both signed for another season, though, in the case of Audette, Gainey has no one to blame but himself. He handed Audette that free agent contract when he was running the show in Dallas. Their extended deals make the pair very difficult to move without eating more salary, something owner George Gillett shouldn't be thrilled about after buying out Czerkawski and McKay's contracts this summer. But the departure of some veterans should allow Gainey and, possibly, Julien to begin the true about-face of this once-storied franchise when (or is it if?) they start playing hockey again in the post-lockout NHL. Until then, a lottery pick in the draft is not such a bad thing.

  12. Ryder gives Canadiens draw with Senators Canadian Press 10/4/2003 OTTAWA (CP) - Prospect Michael Ryder scored for the second night in a row Saturday to lift Montreal to a 1-1 tie with the Ottawa Senators in the Canadiens' pre-season finale. Ryder's second goal of the pre-season in the third period cancelled out one Peter Schaefer's opening goal of the game for the Senators before a Corel Centre crowd of 17,761. Jose Theodore made 20 saves for Montreal, which finished the exhibition schedule with a 2-4-1-2 record. Patrick Lalime stopped 19 shots for Ottawa (8-0-1-0), which failed to win for the first time this pre-season. The Senators wrap up Sunday night in St. Catharines, Ont., against the Buffalo Sabres and play host to the Canadiens in the regular-season opener on Thursday night. Neither team generated much offence through the first two periods, registering just nine shots on goal apiece. Just more than a minute into in the third, however, Theodore made the first stop on a rush by Marian Hossa only to have Schaefer stuff in the rebound to make it 1-0. The lead didn't last long as Ryder took a pass from Yanic Perreault at the top of the left faceoff circle and wired a wrist shot over the glove hand of Lalime to tie the score at the 3:27 mark. :ghg:
  13. i just heard it on cjad that zednik has a sprained knee and they said a sprained knee is usally 7-10 days! aww fuk injuries are starting to pile up!!!!:( :ghg:
  14. Hossa scores winner as Habs tame Wild Canadian Press 10/3/2003 MONTREAL (CP) - Marcel Hossa scored with 2:40 remaining in the third period to give the Montreal Canadiens a 3-2 win Friday over the Minnesota Wild in pre-season action. Michael Ryder and Sheldon Souray also scored for Montreal (2-4-0-2), which outshot Minnesota 8-3 in the final period before an announced Bell Centre crowd of 17,305. Sergei Zholtok and Alexandre Daigle replied for the Wild (4-4-0-0). Mathieu Garon stopped 14 shots for Montreal, while Manny Fernandez made 27 saves for the Wild. Gordie Dwyer - whose position as the Canadiens enforcer was put in jeopardy when the Habs claimed Vancouver tough guy Darren Langdon in Friday's waiver draft - played a high energy game, finishing all his checks and generally being a pest. Brent Burns - the 20th overall pick in this year's draft playing his first game since signing with the Wild on Tuesday - nearly set up a goal on his first shift, sliding the puck through the crease to an open teammate who missed it. After a first period devoid of any goals, penalties or action, the two teams combined for four goals in the second. Zholtok opened the scoring at 1:47 on a power play off a cross-ice feed by Pierre-Marc Bouchard. Daigle gave Minnesota a 2-0 lead on another power play at 5:37, roofing a wrister from the right face-off circle. Souray brought Montreal back to within one while the Habs were shorthanded, one-timing a pass from Niklas Sundstrom past Fernandez at 11:01. Ryder had the goal of the night at 16:33, skating clear across the Minnesota zone, stopping to shed a Wild defender and putting a wrister off Fernandez's glove and in. Jan Bulis hit the post one-timing a feed from Perreault with 2:45 to play in regulation. Off the ensuing faceoff, Mike Ribeiro won the draw and set up Hossa in the slot for a high wrist shot. Notes: Canadiens fans who were booing Patrice Brisebois appear to have taken general manager Bob Gainey's instructions to heart. In the first home game since Gainey admonished the Bell Centre faithful for booing Brisebois every time he touched the puck, the fans generally let him be. He was even cheered when he carried the puck on his first shift, though a handful of fans booed him in the third. :ghg::ghg::ghg: [Edited on 4-10-03 by Habs77]
