It’s wild to see Florida crushing Tampa.

We all knew Tampa was sunsetting but all that elite talent is about to get swept.

Will they trade vets and rebuild or double down and try to win one more time?

    Can’t stand Tampa either way.

Tonight, Canucks better show up. You hear that Pettersson?

What's odd is that Tampa isn't playing bad at all in that series.  They could easily be up if it wasn't for the good version of Bobrovsky showing up.  Don't sense a rebuild is in the cards either way; with a bit more cap flexibility opening up, they might take one more crack with this crew.

*** IF *** this is true, it explains his absence ... but why not just announce it?  ... trying to avoid the "official" concussion protocol?  ... conspiracy theorists want to know.

The possibility of it being concussion-related raises the question of when that occurred ... he played all 82 games this season ... was there an incident in the final game vs TBL?  ... since then?

This isn't the first time this has happened to him, crept up a couple of years ago as well.  I legitimately think they're not sure if it's just migraines or if it is a concussion even though he keeps passing baseline testing which makes it hard to say anything.  Of course, at this time of year, you're lucky to get upper-body or lower-body as an announcement.

Dubois looks like he isn’t competing very hard. Perhaps he is injured, perhaps his heart is in Montreal.

His heart wasn't in Columbus, his heart wasn't in Winnipeg, now maybe his heart isn't in LA.  Maybe his heart just isn't into hockey?  I think that would be the likelier scenario over pining for Montreal.

For Utah, most of the Montreal D are an immediate upgrade over anyone on their roster.  I'm thinking the Price dead money would be better spent on a serious offer to Guentzal.

They can make the offer to Guentzel with Price still on the roster by using offseason LTIR though; they don't have to move Price to do something like that if they wanted to.  Notwithstanding that Utah intends to be true buyers and probably won't take on any more deadweight contracts, why give away a roster defenceman to do what can be done without doing anything?  Seems like a waste of an asset to me.

They need Anntunen (illness) to get healthy and fast.

Provstesov hasnt been good, yes it was arizona but his sv% was in the 870s for his career.

If antunnen can play, he should.

Prosvetov wasn't much better in Colorado than in Arizona considering the quality of the roster in front of him.  He also has one foot out the door already as a KHL contract for next season is believed to be in place.  If that's what they have to turn to, they're in deep trouble.

Xhekaj/Barron what kind of deals will they likely get?

Guhle/Slafkovski, will both get extended in July?

    Ylonen?

At first glance without giving it much thought:

    Xhekaj: 2 x $1.4 (the Harris deal)

    Barron: 1 x $900K one-way

    Guhle: If extended, 8 x $6.5

Slafkovsky: Don't think he'll extend, think Habs will offer 8 x $7.5-$7.75.  That's on the low end for #1 picks so his agent may suggest waiting.

Ylonen: Takes a year at the minimum or is non-tendered.  Could also go overseas and Habs then retain his rights with a QO.

With 3 capable top-6 centers under 25, Dvorak and Evans on the NHL roster, Beck, Kidney and Mesar in the system.  I'm not sure how many more a team needs to be considered stocked at center then.  Just because a player can play wing as well doesn't make them not a center.

Writing off Dach by saying "it wouldnt be wise to put all the eggs in that basket," is very premature.  Crosby missed nearly 2 seasons with much worse concussions early in his career too, nobody wrote him off.  Comparing injury time missed not skill ceiling here.  With 3 capable top-6 centers there's obviously no eggs all put in one basket anyway.

Kidney didn't exactly impress this year (and might be more of a winger than a centre) and Mesar might be too small to be a centre.  So we're looking at Beck and Kapanen as prospects whose stock is on the rise, maybe Xhekaj one day in a lower role.  Not bad but the cupboard isn't fully stocked on the prospect front at centre.

On the NHL roster, there's some depth but with two pending UFA's, it's short-term.  Add to that some uncertainty as to where Newhook's long-term position will be and there is definitely room to augment that position.  It's certainly better than it was a few years ago, sure, but there's a lot of room to add still.

Last game with the Habs organization for Norlinder, Cederqvist, Durandeau, Bourque, Galipeau, Andersson

Add Maillet, McKay, Paquette-Bisson, and Kaskisuo to the list of free agents from that lineup.  Of the ones you listed, I think Galipeau might be back and if Durandeau takes an AHL deal (he'll be hard-pressed for an NHL two-way contract), I could see him back.  Norlinder/Cederqvist/Andersson might all get qualifying offers if they sign overseas before the QO deadline in June so it's possible they'll at least be with the organization (technically) for a little while longer.  Off my additions, I could see them wanting to re-sign all of them in the right scenario.  Long story short, some of these free agents will be back.

(Stephens and Keeper are also free agents from those who didn't play the last game), I think they'll try to re-sign Stephens but Keeper will move on.)

By the way, Laval lost 2-1 yesterday, got goalie'd.

I hope they do not do that. It would be a mistake by J-F Houle if he manages his bench like a house league team

Sometimes, it's not just the coach who decides who plays.  Management will want the prospects in, not the veterans as that's what's best for the organization.

    RANDOM THOUGHT:

If David Savard were willing to sign a 3-yr extension this summer for $2.25 AAV with 25/26 20-team, 26/27 10-team NTC and 27/28 5-team NTC would you do it?

Makes him (hopefully) the 35-yr-old, 3rd pairing, veteran RHD to support Reinbacher and Mailloux the season after next ... AAV still tradeable.

I'm not necessarily opposed to the idea of an extension (especially if Barron winds up being traded) but three years gives me pause.  I get the lower AAV is thanks to the longer term but that third year is a big red flag.  If they were to pursue an extension, I think they'd be capping the offer at two seasons.

Mesar is down 3-0 in series vs London. His junior career could be over tomorrow.

Might he play in the world championships or Laval if they sneek into playoffs?

I think if Slovakia indicated they'd add Mesar to the roster, they'd lean toward going that way.  Houle is not one who typically likes playing prospects at this time of the year unless his hand is forced so I'm not sure Mesar would get regular minutes in what could be a very limited postseason.

Seems like a future Armia type? Hopefully "good " Armia, not like the bum we saw prior to January.

Offensively, not a bad comparison.  He's good on board work/cycling with a decent enough shot (not quite as strong as Armia's though).  He might be a 10-goal guy in the NHL.  Defensively, I'd be pleasantly surprised if he got to Armia's level.

Rich owners "eat" contracts if GMs over-promise and under-deliver ... Presidents usually get to have 2/3 GMs before their heads are on the chopping block ... as long as he remains GM, Dubas is at higher risk than other Presidents of getting a nice severance package but having no job to go to every day.

While Pittsburgh is owned by FSG, they're not exactly known as being high-spending teams when it comes to the front office.  Dubas is all in on analytics which aligns with ownership.  He could go on a three-year vacation in the Bahamas and still have his job.

17 hours ago, Habs Fan in Edmonton said:

The thing I don't get with Dubas is that he doesn't seem to know which way to go. He trades for Karlsson which seems to indicate he is going all in with an aging core and then he trades Guentzel who is still in his prime for young players/picks at the deadline??  Is he all in or doing a rebuild??  I think you have to do one or the other not a bit of both.

At the time of the Karlsson trade, the thought was this would make them a playoff contender.  By the deadline, they were a few points out and Guentzel is a pending UFA.  The fact they prioritized prospects over picks suggests they're not moving off the win-now (or soon) approach but knew there was a good chance Guentzel was leaving for nothing in free agency so they opted to sell.

I thought about the same thing, I am still thinking. I think it might have something to do with  a team outside the top ten winning the lottery and can only move up 10 spots. So let's say they move from 12 to 2 and then the Habs win the 2 slot lottery but that is already taken so they move to 3 instead???  Maybe

Yep.  12 wins the first lottery.  That locks SJ at 1 and 12 moves up to 2.  Whoever wins the second lottery gets 3, hence the miniscule odds.

I expect he looks forward to hiring a GM and getting a bit more job security as just President of Hockey Operations ... otherwise, he may be looking for a new job sooner than he expected.

He has six years left on his contract.  I think he has all the job security he could dream of.

  15. Xhekaj acknowledged today that he played through the shoulder injury for most of the season and hit it from the team since he wanted to play.

Guhle confirmed he has a head injury but is hoping to play at the Worlds and has been invited to play.  Considering he's been skating for a few days now, I think he was probably pretty close to returning had the season gone on.

I don’t know how you folks keep all of this straight 🤔

For me, I have a copy of the CBA and the MOU extension on my computer.  I rarely go more than a couple of weeks without needing to consult it for something whether it's for something here or on PHR so some of the obscure stuff sticks after a while.  And as most here know, I'm a bit of a cap guy so I have some odd facts on that front in my head.

At most, he will get 2/72 of his AHL contract ... assuming it is the same as the AHL value of his ELC, that is $2,569.44 ... one game of his NHL ELC would have been $11,280.49 ... while that would have been some nice "pocket change", the REAL motivation for asking/hoping for a 23/24 ELC would obviously have been to burn a year and get to RFA, then eventually UFA if all goes well, a year sooner.

There is no AHL salary this year since the contract doesn't start until 2024-25 so it doesn't have anything to do with his AHL salary on the entry-level deal.  There is no cap on what a one-way AHL contract can be and often runs into the six figures.  I wouldn't be surprised if Tuch's 'salary' in the minors is actually in the six figures.  He's eligible for a full weeks' pay since the deal was registered there Monday and there are games I think until Sunday.  That wouldn't completely compensate for what a few NHL days would have been but it would help bridge the gap compared to an ATO which is basically just per diem money.

If his ELC would have started this season, how much would he have actually received? Maybe 1/82 or 1/41 of the salary, plus the signing bonus?

It goes by number of days in the season.  I think it's 190 or 192 this year, something like that.  So 3/192 since there's games until Thursday and then the signing bonus as you noted.
