It's the Beasts of the East clashing. Despite Pittsburgh being behind the Lightning in points, they still lead their Metropolitan division by three points (ahead of the... Islanders? Sure) taking on the Montreal Canadiens and their league leading 29 points. The Penguins, however, have played three less games than the Canadiens (16, tied with Philly, one more than Florida) who along with Tampa, Buffalo and Boston have played the most games in the East (San Jose has for some reason already played 20 games). While most would suspect Pittsburgh to be an offensive dynamo, it's actually in defence that keeps them where they are. Fleury hasn't been Fleury of old and the additions to their blueline has been positive. The Penguins have allowed 12 less goals than the Habs while scoring five more. The Penguins are also 9-1 in their past 10, with a loss to the Leafs. There's a few throwbacks to Pittsburgh in the Habs lineup, including former coach Michel Therrien and former Penguins defenceman Sergei Gonchar, who is still so respected in Pittsburgh that fellow Russian Evgeni Malkin made him a sign and rode a tiger to celebrate Gonchar's 800 point milestone. As for injuries, defenceman Olli Maata might be coming back to the lineup while Kris Letang appeared to have hurt himself in practice. No word if it was serious. Both could likely be in the lineup for the Pens. Pascal Dupuis is injured, which might lead Pittsburgh to take Hornqvist off Crosby's line and put him with Malkin for... some reason. I don't know. Read about it in a Penguins practice. No changes for the Habs are expected in the lineup: Montreal Canadiens Max Pacioretty - David Desharnais - P.A. Parenteau Alex Galchenyuk - Tomas Plekanec - Brendan Gallagher Brandon Prust - Lars Eller - Jiri Sekac Manny Malhotra - Dale Weise Andrei Markov - P.K. Subban Alexei Emelin - Sergei Gonchar Mike Weaver - Tom Gilbert Nathan Beaulieu Carey Price Pittsburgh Penguins Chris Kunitz - Sidney Crosby - Blake Comeau Beau Bennett - Evgeni Malkin - Patric Hornqvist Nick Spaling - Brandon Sutter - Steve Downie Zach Sill - Marcel Goc - Craig Adams Paul Martin - Kris Letang Christian Erhoff - Rob Bortozzo Rob Scuderi - Simon Despres/Olli Maata Marc Andre Fleury

It's yet another 2-in-2 set as the Bulldogs (4-6-2-0) travel to St. John's to take on the struggling IceCaps (3-8-3-1). The Winnipeg Jets have been... good in goal? That's the crazy thing about the start of the regular season. Crazy things happen. Like Pavelec posting a better save percentage than Carey Price and the Jets proving they don't need Budaj backing them up... so far. Future Habs Andrew Ladd and Blake Wheeler have 10 points each and Bogosian no longer looks like that young D you can throw in a deal and hope the Jets will bite. They look good... so far. As for Montreal, we're celebrating the departure of Rene Bourque with dancing, cakes and conspiracies that Michel Therrien and Marc Bergevin had a Moneyball confrontation about a crap player like Bourque. Because as we all know, Therrien can do no right and Bergevin can do no wrong (unless we draft someone you don't like. Then it's Timmins can do no wrong and Bergevin can do no right. Why is everything absolutes on the Internet!?) Habs lines during practice yesterday Galchenyuk -Plekanec - Gallagher Pacioretty - Desharnais - Parenteau Sekac - Eller - Prust Bowman? - Malhotra - Weise Markov - Subban Emelin - Weaver Beaulieu - Gilbert Gonchar? Price Tokarski Atlanta Thrashers lines Ladd - Little - Frolik Kane - Scheiffle - Wheeler Perreault - Lowry - Byfuglien Galiardi - Slater - Thorburn Enstrom - Bogosian Stuart - Trouba Clitsome - Postma Pavelec Hutchinson Fun Stuff: - Winnipeg legend Dale Hawerchuk was originally the guy Montreal was going to trade Chris Chelios for. Instead the Canadiens trading Chelios (WITH A SECOND ROUND PICK) for Denis Savard while the Jets did a blockbuster deal with the Sabres. - Gallagher doesn't like the Jets: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a46dTonXnSw - With the Jets doing well, all of the "Trade the best Jets for Habs garbage" trade proposals are gonna die out... until the trade deadline of course. - Pavelec is a great example of a terrible goalie (the worst in the NHL) on a hot streak. I'm sure Bob Essensa did this a time or two.

We could be looking at a boring one folks! The Minnesota Wild are struggling to score. The Montreal Canadiens... are struggling to score. Rookie Jason Zucker has five goals for Minnesota, which leads the team. Parise has four, Neiterider has four, Pom has three... and everyone else has only one or two goals. For Montreal, they have two five goal scorers in Pacioretty and Plekanec while Galchenyuk has four and Subban, Parenteau and Gallagher have three. Falls after that. Montreal has 10 players with a goose egg for goals. Oh yeah, Minnesota also has a worse Powerplay! 5.3% compared to our 7.9%! Their PK is a little better (86% to 84%) but both are pretty strong. This will either be a game where one team breaks out of a slump or both break out of a slump or the more likely result? We will be enjoying (ha) a 2-1 shootout again. Minnesota Vanek - Granlund - Pominville Coyle - Koivu - Zucker Fontaine - Brodziak - Neitereider Carter - Haula - Veilleux Suter - Brodin Scandella - Folin Ballard - Dumba Kuemper Backstrom Montreal Galchenyuk - Plekanec - Parenteau Pacioretty - Desharnais - Gallagher Prust - Eller - Sekac Moen - Malhotra - Weise Markov - Subban Emelin - Gilbert Beaulieu - Weaver Price Tokarski

Since no one else got around to it and puck drop is 3 hours away, here's a quick GDT for tonight: Pacioretty - Desharnais - Gallagher Galchenyuk - Plekanec - Parenteau Bourque - Eller - Weise Prust - Malhotra - Moen Emelin - Subban Markov - Gilbert Tinordi - Weaver Price Hudler - Monahan - Colborne Gaudreau - Backlund - Byron Glencross - Stajan - Jones Bollig - Bouma - Jooris Giordano - Brodie Russell - Wideman Smid - Engelland Hiller With no morning skate today, there's no official lineup news for the Habs. That said, with Calgary being a more physical opponent and Beaulieu's less than impressive performance yesterday, I expect Tinordi will be back in at the very least. TV info: In French on RDS 2 (regional), in English on City Montreal and Sportsnet Flames, a companion channel to SN West (both regional as well).
