smon
The key issue is that they were to be used soon in 'investigative hearings' where the government planned to force Sikh fundamentalists, including the father-in-law of Bains, to testify. The whole bombing investigations were a disgrace. If 325 Americans were killed by religious terrorists, they'd have arrested, tried and convicted the entire bunch of conspirators by now. There was real racism within the government, they felt that these victims weren't "Canadian", even though 300 or so were Canadian citizens, because they weren't Caucasians. Brian Mulroney even phoned the government of India to express his condolences in an embarassing faux pas before being corrected and reminded that his citizens had died, not India's. CSIS was aware of the bomb plot, but didn't get involved to stop it for unknown reasons. After the bombing, they destroyed all their wiretaps of these Sikh plotters, and subsequently these men were acquitted...quite a sad chapter in our incompetent national security history, right before the Arar chapter. Quite the chapter in Canadian history.
Dirty Harry
And now the whole thing is trying to be buried again by the Liberals because the Sikhs are an important constituency who consistently deliver their votes to them (and most recently, directly to Dion during the leadership convention).
