A-game Anderson has value, but his game is effectively a solo effort, so the linemates need to play accordingly. I give you the Armia-Newhook-Gallagher line (with two of the most maligne forwards we have) as the counterexample: the three players play with each other, look for each other and work together to create scoring chances.

that is a great observation on the Newhook line.

Anderson was considered by many as a glorified 3rd liner that had an outliers season before getting injured in CBJ

MB touted him a à player that helps you in the playoff and often pushed criticism on regular season dry spells he had. He was overpaid because the Habs needed that type of player during the Price-Weber window.

In the current team’s context, Anderson is useless. Playing 3rd line will not raise his trade value, unless he has an unselfish centre like Evans to do all the dirty/defensive work for him.

my hope is that the Habs get an uncontested top-6 forward that pushes Anderson out of the top-6 and out of the team on a trade

All this talk about Armia is why he got a ridiculous contract in the first place. Let’s not be fooled into giving him another one!

Half a great, surprising season vs. a career of mediocrity.

I agree on not giving him another contract, let's just make sure he is given all the chances to improve his trade value leading into the trade deadline next year.

  3. Also, some moves are meant for the AHL team, not necessarily for the projected NHL roster. Tuch still needs to prove he can play at the next level, I do not think he has proven he is a legitimate NHL prospect yet.

I expect HuGo to be making moves based on where they want the team to be in 25/26 or 26/27 ... not 24/25.

It's a lot of assumptions (Armia, Evans and others); so much depends on whether Hughes' assumptions match yours (or mine)--and what deals they are able to make in the summer. Getting rid of Armia, Evans, Pearson and Ylonen, for example, will make our already-weak PK far worse yet, so that would likely be contingent on signing someone that can also take on that role.

    Hab's PK TOI this year.

I agree with you, the PK has not performed well for long pans this season. I doubt they "get rid" or Armia this summer. Pearson and Ylonen are not going to be re-signed IMHO; but I would not mind seeing White come pack to training camp on a PTO to be a 14th forward, in case on eof the Hab's centers gets hurt again. I doubt HughGort will consider Gignac an option to start the year in the NHL.

I doubt Luke Tuch starts in the NHL next season. He will be a winger in Laval probably replacing Cederqvist.

A regulation loss would have been better BUT they are now 2 points ahead of Ottawa and the Sens have the tie breaker so another regulation loss by the Habs or another 2 points by the Sens guarantees they will finish ahead of Montreal. It would also be nice if Arizona could take a point from Calgary tomorrow night.  Arizona has beaten Vancouver and Edmonton back to back so maybe that is too much to expect.

Plus that was a huge win by Detroit against Toronto tonight. It guarantees that their games against Montreal will be massive for them.  Hopefully they don't choke.

quitting the tanking habit is hard, I am using an AHL patch this season and almost has me out of the habit.

    gotta sink it for cellebrini!

WHY in the world would the Habs want to "ice their best lineup"?   Wins only have the potential to worsen their draft position.

Hutson is getting at least one game because that burns a year of his ELC ... THAT and getting some $$$ in his pocket immediately is why he signed now ... there was always the "possibility" of his waiting and ultimately deciding to play another NCAA season.

Struble is with the Habs because they only have 7 healthy defencemen and one of them could be injured/get sick before the game roster is submitted.

@dlbalr made it clear that Baby Xhekaj is playing because Stephens can't, not to "give him a game".

So, not the management screw-up you seem to so often hope for.

    Dormamu, is that you? 😁

  7. Unless Martin St-Louis changes how he constructs his defensive pairs and how he plays, I do not see things the same way I wold for other teams or Habs vintage.

I think Matheson stays with Montreal for the next two seasons.

I also think that Guhle will return to the left-side and anchor the 2nd pair.

Savard will be here until the trade deadline, with one of Mailloux/Barron/Reinbacher taking those minutes late in the season

    This gives:

    Matheson-Savard

    Guhle-Barron/Mailloux/Reinbacher

I have not placed yet any of the other Ds, which will be fighting for a 3rd-pairing job:

    Xhekaj-Struble-Harris-Kovacevic

The Habs could keep the four of them in a rotation. At least until the trade deadline. Patience is on the Habs side to sort this out.

If the Habs feel compelled to have an NHL-level top-4 RD, they could swing a trade for that player, especially if they plan on trading Savard at the deadline. It will be too expensive later in the season to fill two RD holes if Barron/Mailloux/Reinbacher are not NHL-ready by that time.

I would rather be patient with Barron/Mailloux/Reinbacher, I would even give Barron the 4D spot on the 2nd pair from the beginning of the season and suffer through his growing pains in the NHL. He would be buying the Habs time until their defensive prospects solidify their game, to then make a decision at the end of next season.

Xhekaj will play tonight but it comes at the expense of Stephens who is out with an undisclosed injury.  Not an ideal time to be missing your top two centres, that's for sure.

It is annoying that the Canadiens AND the Rocket are both limping along to the end of the regular season with no obvious effort - to my limited understanding - in helping either team to ice their best lineup possible.

If you give Hutson a few games, why not also Mailloux?

If you play young Xhekaj in a key game tonight, why not Strubble?

managing both rosters this way does not seem like the most effective. At least to my Mr. Potato Head reasoning.

Definitely a harder path but still not impossible since Laval has the tiebreaker on Belleville if it comes to it.  If Laval wins their last 3 games in regulation (2 against Belleville), Belleville has to get 5 points out of 6 in their other 3 games to beat the Rocket.  The Sens have Rochester on the road for 2 starting tonight and the Amerks are a better team on paper.

If the Amerks don't rest anyone, and Belleville doesn't get any of the call-ups back, it may be possible.

  10. not enough offensive generated by the 1st line, although Heineman shot often, I do not remember him looking like a threat to score despite scoring one. I will need to view the replay to remember.

Mailloux had a good game but he also fumbled the puck a few times. Passes were not sharp and they lacked speed when entering the offensive zone
