Spider-Man NL Posted May 25, 2004 Share Posted May 25, 2004 http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/news_story.asp?id=85166 TSN.ca Staff 5/25/2004 Philadelphia Flyers general manager Bob Clarke says he'd like to re-sign forwards Keith Primeau, Alexei Zhamnov and defenseman Vladimir Malakhov. However, the future of forwards John LeClair and Tony Amonte in Philadelphia are uncertain at this point. "The problem we have to face with John is the size of his salary and what the new CBA is going to bring us," Clarke tells the Philadelphia Inquirer, adding that Amonte is in a "similar situation". LeClair has $18-million left on the final two years of his deal while Amonte will cost the Flyers $10-million over the next two years plus another $1-million in deferred salary. The Phoenix Coyotes are picking up another $3-million in salary. Clarke says among the options he's considering is buying out the two players at two-thirds of their salary while trading them is unlikely given the uncertainty of the labour situation. Clarke says he plans to meet with Mark Recchi later this week to discuss re-signing with the team, however, he admits the process may have to wait until after a new collective agreement is signed. "He's at an age where we have to see under the new CBA what a player of that level gets," Clarke tells the newspaper. "It's hard to guess. I don't intend to sign him now." The Flyers aren't expected to pick up the $4.75-million option on backup goaltender Sean Burke. Clarke says if there is a 2005 season, Phantoms goalie Antero Niittymaki would backup starter Robert Esche. Jeremy Roenick admits retirement is a possibility for him but adds he's keeping all his options open. "Yeah, (retirement) is always there. But I'm not going to close my options. I love this game and I love Philadelphia. This team is awesome," he tells the Delaware County Times. "It's been a hard year for me. It's been 16 years in this league and this year was the most difficult. It was tough not only on the body but the brain." Clarke says would prefer Roenick not play for Team USA in the upcoming World Cup, so he can fully recover this summer. "I thought the injury Roenick had was really a devastating injury," said Clarke. "As hard as he tried and as much as he gave us in the players I think there were effects ... it's his decision, but I think he should take the summer off and get his head and his body healthy and get rejuvenated." Roenick says he's not optimistic about the future of the NHL beyond this summer. "We don't know if anybody's going to be back next year and that's what makes it more difficult," he tells the County Times. "I seriously feel that both sides are going to be very bullheaded and there's probably going to be a lengthy lockout. We're at a time when hockey is still on the rise and getting more popular. It could be a while with a labor agreement keeping hockey away from people. It'll not only hurt the fans in the stands but it would also I think hurt a lot of the teams that are struggling to stay afloat." Flyers owner Ed Snider agreed with Roenick. "Nobody wins in a war, everybody loses," he said. "It's something that's very painful but that we have to go through, because when you have the kind of season we've had and you still lose money you have to look in the mirror and say, 'What's it all about?' Leafs Suck Posted May 25, 2004 Share Posted May 25, 2004 Flyers would prolly be better without them LeClair had a HORRID playoffs. He is a shell of what he was 5 years ago. Same with Amonte.
