Saku Koivu - The Best Second Line centre in the League

Koivu has been a great Habs for many years, I personally think with Plekanec , we have one good young centre, and would prefer the team try to add some size to the position. When the playoffs start, we are going to have to win battles along the boards, as well as in front of the net, and Montreal,s size there bothers many.

The Habs are no longer small, sure at centre they are but thier wingers are big.

As for Koivu I believe he will play for 4-5 more years at a declining rate, he is a leader he will continue to be the captain and a power play specialist as well as chipping in on a 3rd scoring line.

So then who is currently, right now, having a better second line C season then Koivu?

And don't use Malkin.

Why not use Malkin? He is the second best C on the team, that is what a second line C is.

Other than Malkin, there is Brad Richards, Mike Richards/Briere, Marleau, Stastny, Brind'Amour, Chris Drury, Mike Cammalleri, Patrice Bergeron/Marc Savard and PM Bouchard (even Mikko is gaining quickly on Saku) are all definite candidates. It's clearly premature to throw out statements like "Koivu is the best second line centre in the league" without taking a look to see what the other teams have got.

How? He's talking about this season. Sure, Malkin and Richards are better statistically and Briere too. But the vast majority you claim are better this season aren't.

Marleau's having a pathetic year, Drury is producing less, Patrice Bergeron hasn't played most of the season, Cammalleri is having a bad season, and Marc Savard is acutally Boston's #1 centre, not #2.

Just look at the numbers before you claim that half the league is better than he is. I mean honestly, come on, Patrick Marleau's fantastic 47 points and -19?

He says clearly "Saku Koivu is the best second line centre in the league." Marleau is picking it up, he's been almost a point a game since the trade deadline. Drury is obviously producing less, he went from a firewagon team to a very reserved defensive team, he was bound to score less. On Boston, both their first two Cs are better, so it doesn't matter which one you consider their 1st. Bergeron isn't playing, but that doesn't suddenly make him a bad player. Same for Marleau and Cammalleri, having off-years but that doesn't mean that they are no longer great players, the question was not who's hotter (though Marleau is hotter), but who's better.

And then you make no mention of Minny, Colorado, Dallas and Carolina. All very deep at centre.

I'm counting teams that have a better second line centre than us. To me, that is Pittsburgh, Philly, NY Rangers, Minnesota, Boston (when Bergeron's healthy), San Jose, LA, Dallas, Colorado and Carolina. That is 10 teams by my count, putting Koivu 11th.

You disagreed with NYR, SJ, Boston and LA. That places Koivu 7th.

Saying he is one of the better 2nd line Cs is fine because it is true. But saying he is the best and then stopping at that... that's just a false statement, even if you refuse to count Malkin just to make your point work.

In your previous post you clearly quoted him saying the following: "So then who is currently, right now, having a better second line C season then Koivu?"

But I digress.

Clearly I'm of the opinion that Koivu is having an off year, and you are not.
