Ok a couple of things- even though I am not that crazy about Markov as some of you are, why would Markov sign here? It seems to me he will get just as much signing for a great team like the Wings or maybe the KIngs if he likes the limelight or he could sign with the Caps and join his old buddy Ovechkin or even sign with the Pens who seem to be one steady defenceman away from greatness. The only reason I see Markov remaining is the cap may hinder some teams like the Wings. As for Souray, all signs seem to point to him leaving. I tend to doubt Gainey will trade him so we lose him as well. Rivet doesn't seem to be in our plans and I could see him signing with Toronto or Ottawa for next year. All to say, if we don't trade these guys by Tuesday we may get nothing in return

I have to ask myself how did we get ourselves in this mess? We have 3 veteran free agent defencemen going into the trade deadline. Obviously other teams know that and will deal from that vantage point. My point is why didn't we sign any of them during the year? What happens if they all leave at year-end if they are not traded??? Can we sign equivalent free agent defencemen? We all know what success Gainey has had luring free agents to Montreal.

Kovalev and Rivet to the Pens for Ouellet Letang and a draft pick 2 or 3- what kind of cap space do the Pens have anyways, Markov and Plekanec to the Wild for Gaborik and Bouchard, Souray to the Sharks for Carle and Pavelski(whatever)

I remember in 1986 we had this type of game right before the playoffs against the Bruins and won it all- Who Knows???

I hope your right, cause what Gainey has shown in the past is exactly what he said today 'Let's stick with the players we have'. If he thinks he can sign Souray Markov and Rivet for next year then I have no problems. If we lose all three in the summer, and we get some third rate free agent to replace them then Gainey should be fired.

That is incorrect in many ways- first the leafs have not won since 1967(I hope that was a typo)- Armstrong played up to 1971, if you find a leaf that was gone after 1967 you may have a case, second Armstrong was not traded by the Leafs, a better analogy would have been Frank Mahovlich, who was traded I do believe in 1969 and subsequently won the Cup in Montreal and Montreal kept on winning with his brother in the 70's. I think the curse is still in the numbers, the fact the Leafs did not retire any numbers of their dynasties and the fact Sundin wears 13(tongue in cheek)
