  1. Something is going to happen soon.  They just lost to SJ in regulation to claim sole position of last.  Not a good look for a cup favorite at the start of the season.

I doubt Woodcroft is the head coach in 24 hours.  There has to be a goalie move somewhere in the next week or they're writing off this season.

  2. Benching a player sets up accountability.  He's a first overall pick, not Wayne Gretzky.  There's been talk of shipping him to the AHL all season.  First step is benching, see how he responds, next is a healthy scratch, see how he responds, then send him down.  It's all stages of development.  It's showing St. Louis is holding players accountable for their play, which is nothing but a good thing.

Not a proposal but I was thinking about Huberdeau having another mediocre year in Calgary and I wondered if there is an opportunity there.

Cap hit of 10.5 million for 7 years with no movement clause of one form or another. Would he want to play in Quebec?

Flames must be crapping their pants

Is there an opportunity for the Habs to take Huberdeau? at a cost of course. That contract sure is scary.

Is Huberdeau a 40 point player or a 100 point player that just needs out of Calgary? Could he transform the Suzuki line?

Would dumping Gallagher and Armia and getting Huberdeau plus a prospect/pick be worth the risk? Would Calgary consider it?

    Just spitballing

Calgary probably would entertain a trade, but not for 2 cap dumps.

Although tonight’s abolition isn’t helping this case, I think we should be looking at trading them Allen. Maybe get a quality prospect or young FW back - assuming they have any.

Bourgault is having a better year in the minors this year.  He's their best prospect not in the NHL.  RW with high offensive upside.

  5. Tampa Bay Lightning

    Montreal Candiens

    Hagel - Point - Kucherov
    Stamkos - Paul - Sheary
    Motte - Cirelli - Barre-Boulet

    Hedman - Cernak
    Sergachev - Raddysh
    de Haan - Perbix

    Tomkins

    Slafkovsky - Suzuki - Caufield
    Newhook - Dvorak - Anderson
    Pearson - Monahan - Gallagher
    Pezzetta - Evans - Armia

that is what I thought, to use Campbell

    interesting news:

I just saw that myself.  They are either calling up Rodrigue, or more likely, trading for a goalie.  As they are only carrying one goalie, if it is a trade, it’ll be announced in the next 24 hours or less to allow for travel time.

Edit: Seravalli is reporting they are calling up Pickard.  This makes no sense, Campbell is being replaced by a minor league goalie as punishment for Skinner’s play the last couple of games?  I hope someone with a bigger hockey brain than me can understand this move as it only saves $344k in cap space.

We would be free of both Gallagher and Price and we can stick Campbell in the minors for a 4 million cap hit for three years.

Not a plausible scenario anyway but it seems worth it to me

Or actually use Campbell.  He would be going from 2 high-pressure situations in Toronto and Edmonton, to a low pressure situation in Montreal.  He might rebound enough to be serviceable(tradeable w/ salary retention at some point in the future).  Edmonton has a reputation over recent years of being a goaltender graveyard.  It's possible the Campbell that showed flashes of brilliance in the LA years and early Toronto years is still there.  A year in the minors and another shot in the NHL in case of injury or next year might do him well.

Changing the coach is always the easy short term solution. This is basically the same team that made the Stanley Cup semi finals last year. They have little cap room flexibility and other GM's can smell desperation. This team is basically all in with McDavid/Draisaitl in their prime and new contracts for them not that far on the horizon. I think the next couple weeks will determine whether changes are made.

It is the same team, but they don't have the offense bailing them out this year.  It's easy to keep goals against down when you're riding the momentum of scoring a lot.  I think the next couple of weeks will determine if the Oilers can make the playoffs or not.  Either way I think changes will be made, McDavid and Draisaitl are in the prime, so they have to worry about squandering it and either of them wanting out.  Draisaitl only has 2 more years left and McDavid only has 3 on their contracts.

Bouchard has had a really tough start to the year defensively. Oilers are in a tough spot but I don't think they do anything in the short term.

Rumors have been swirling for a week now about Woodcroft getting canned.  With his ejection last night, it's clear he's grasping at straws to get the team going.  Maybe player-wise nothing is planned for the short term, but those plans will quickly change as the window is closing fast on the Oilers playoff hopes.  They realistically need to get to .500 by January to have a remote chance to make the playoffs.  Which would involve quite the turn around in the short term.

Lightning's 2024 first and second are spoken for, as is there 2025 first ... and Vasilevsky is rumoured to be returning by American Thanksgiving, so I expect they will tough it out.

Carolina is another "Cup contender" with bad goaltending at the moment ... all three of their goalies are sub-.900 Sv% at the moment ...

I knew the Tampa Bay situation was bleak.

I would doubt Carolina makes a deal with Montreal unless they are really desperate.  I could see Allen for Andersson plus if it were to happen.

No way do I want Campbell’s cap hit at. A time we while be making a push to be a legit playoff team, and potentially a contender. I wouldn’t mind trading Allen for a good prospect and a a bad contract for the rest of this year, and at most next year. But not longer than that.

I think Tampa could be another team  that may be interested in one our goalies - but would need to dump salary.

The cupboards are bare in Edmonton, and even barer in Tampa Bay.  Edmonton has a few prospects that could make NHL impact, while Tampa Bay has a few prospect that are a wish and a prayer.  Any deal with Tampa Bay would be from picks.

  12. Seeing as Montréal is in desperate need of moving a goalie and Edmonton is desperate to get goaltending.  How about a crazy proposal.

    To Edmonton

    Allen

    To Montréal

    Campbell, $1.15m retained

    Xaveir Bourgault

Oilers get a hot goalie as they desperately need goaltending.  The cap hit is a wash for the first 2 years, but Edmonton gets out of most of Campbell's cap hit in year 3 and 4.  They have been trying to move him for nearly a year anyway.

Montréal uses Price's LTIR for Campbell, who can be sent to the minors or further retained in an attempt to move, which would be doubtful anytime soon.  They get a good RW prospect that is still in the minors, looking to get NHL icetime this year.  The biggest downside is Campbell's contract runs a year longer than Price's LTIR.  By this time anything can happen, from cap space being freed up by trades or the possibility of Campbell playing well enough to be traded.

This would imply Montembeault and Primeau would be 1/2, with Campbell being in the minors to save some of the cap hit and only used in case of an injury.  Nobody will claim him off waivers.

Why does Marty continue to keep Newhook, Slaf, Anderson together?

I know the RHP injury caused some changes there but seriously Marty the second line is terrible and you need to do something about it.

Dvorak will be off LTIR and is expected to be ready for Saturday.  This will free Monahan from the 3rd line and he will most likely center the 2nd line between Slaf and Newhook.  I would imagine this means Anderson goes back to the top line regardless of RHP is hurt or not.
