See this is why I want to see one of the rookies in the lineup now. We could roll Markov - Subban Emelin - Diaz Tinordi/Beaulieu - Gorges as early as next year, with Pateryun as the 7th, and the loser of Tinordi vs Beaulieu as your first callup and rookie in 2015. But its hard to break in all these rookies at once. If you break in one of Tinordi/Beaulieu now, you can break in the second one next year, and then the defence is damn good even faster.

I know I didn't like Crisp's pick at the time, and I still think that Andrighetto who was drafted after him is a better prospect, but I don't mind trying to find a home grown grinder in the third round the more i think about it. He wouldnt have been my pick, but I won't get too angry. I just hated the home grown grinder in the first round. The McCarron pick pisses me off. I hope I'm wrong.

Murray missed practice. Speculation is he's a little sore from the fight.

Gaborik is a UFA who hscores less goals in recent years than Pacioretty. I wouldn't trade Pacioretty one for one for the guy... Never mind throwing in our best prospect (and I wouldn't give him 1 for 1 even if Gaborik had an extension). Pacioretty is a a 30-35 goal guy with a contract that is absolute gold right now.... absolute gold.

Wheeling Nailers/ECHL General Discussion Thread
Commandant replied to dlbalr's topic in Habs & Hockey Talk
If only we can find a way to get him to Hamilton next year and cut Mayer. -
He's 19 years old in Junior Hockey. Even guys like Kypreos and Moen put up good stats in their fourth season of junior hockey. Heck Ryan White was a big time scorer at that age. Same with Lapierre and Gabriel Dumont, and others. Saying I hope he becomes a "Moen" isn't saying he's a goon. Moen is a useful 3rd/4th line tweener. To even make the NHL as a grinder, you are gonna need to score as a 19 year old in the CHL. He's not a superheavyweight like John Scott who can get by with still being garbage at all levels.
-
I hope Crisp becomes Travis Moen, not Brendan Gallagher. Jeremie Gregoire is looking good for a 6th rounder.

The Leafs have been outshot by 20 or more shots 6 times in 25 games this season.
-
Exactly, there are exceptions to the rule, which you can identify by watching the player and team.... ie Higgins... but that doesnt mean the whole idea behind these stats is useless, just that you have to learn how to use them. As for the Leafs that tire fire got out shot 17-0 in the third period, including what TSN tracked as 10 scoring chances. They blew a 3 goal 2nd period lead (and 2 goal third period lead) giving up 5 goals to the Pens and losing in a shootout. That defence? TIRE FIRE. Dion #3 miscast as a #1 Gunnarson a #4 miscast as a 2 Franson... good #3 Rielly, will be great, but is NOT ready. Fraser Should not be in the NHL Ranger Should not be in the NHL Gardiner.... in press box cause every time he makes one little mistake Carlyle treats him like shit and benches him. Carlyle is ruining the kid and he needs out of Toronto.

What ****ing Bullshit... .the guy says to a Swedish Newspaper that he had to live in a crappy area full of crime, and that he never had enough money to go out with his teammates. He makes 70K per year, plus his team gives him per diems too. Also got 180K from the Habs this summer as a signing bonus. And he can't find a place in the good areas of Hamilton (ie Westdale or the Mountain or Ancaster) and he doesn't have money to go out with teammates? BULL ****ING SHIT. He's a ing liar.... there is no reason he shouldn't have enough money to go out with his teammates. NONE. ------ This was all about the fact he could make more in the SEL... 100%. Not about how bad Hamilton is and his lack of money there. Its all a gross exaggeration.
-
Meh, its an excuse. He can see the writing on the wall.... He's fourth on the bulldogs as far as being a defence prospect goes (behind Beaulieu, Tinordi, Pateryn) he's good offensively but bad defensively. He gets way more money in the SEL than the 70K he gets in the AHL. He gave it a shot, saw it was going nowhere and he was a long shot to make the NHL full-time and bailed. Oh well, no biggie.

bournival does produce on any line he's on. Bourque doesn't. A combo of Gally - Eller - Bourque Moen - Bournival - Prust Gives us more than Gally - Eller - Bournival Moen - Prust - Bourque IMO.
-
Thats true. And that is why they are part of the answer and not the whole answer. In most cases though, you will find that the number of scoring chances.... ie... the number of shots with traffic, and from high quality areas, usually tracks extremely close to corsi and fenwick.... over large sample sizes the correlation is extremely high. Sure they won't replace scouting by eye, but they are useful. The idea that they are worthless is just as misguided as the SB Nation philosophy that they are the be all and end all. This isn't black and white. This isn't extreme positions.... they can be a valuable tool without being perfect.
-
I figured thats what it was, that you copied and pasted last games format. Also i hear scott is in and foligno (unclear if healthy scratch or injury) is out.
-
eff Zatkoff isn't the backup either.

The last thing to notice about the Philly/Florida game is that Florida was actually a better team when the game was close (tied or 1 goal game).... Philly really racked up their shot total after Florida got a two goal lead. There are stats that have recognized the fact that when teams get ahead two or more goals there is a natural tendency to go into a defensive shell.... and teams that are trailing usually up the offence in these situations. This is something that happens around the league. And thats why numbers like "Corsi Close" or "fenwick close" ie.... what the results are when the game is tied, or within one goal, are more valuable than just the pure Corsi or Fenwick number.
-
yes they are supplementary information, but what you are describing isn't advanced stats. Advanced stats are more than just pure shots on goal. The shots were 39 to 31 for Philly However They were 10-6 on the PP, and PP doesn't count in this stat. so that breaks down to 29 to 25 meaning it was a pretty even game at ES for just shots. and then you have 7 missed shots for Philly and 10 for florida and its 36 to 35 in terms of fenwick there is no huge difference here that says a team was lucky to win... the possession was pretty even. But thats not how these stats are supposed to work.... they don't tell you who is winning any one individual game. They do tell you over the long run... over full 82 game seasons, that the correlation between teams who do well in these stats and the number of wins they get in a full season is very high. They only become statistically significant in high sample sizes. In individual games there is too much white noise. The trends have to be looked at in at least 10 game segments.
-
They are moar big so surely that means they are better playoff performers. Of course this ignores how Briere and Gionta are small and have spent their careers as playoff studs, and the 2nd smallest team in the NHL won the cup last year, but yeah .... Big always wins in the playoffs. The Leafs defence is a tire fire.... seriously Phaneuf is a poor #1 (he'd be a great #3).... Franson is good in his role... but the other 4 are all over their heads.
-
Well he had prior dealings with their GM who is now fired, and the front office was cleaned out since Nill took over. As for moving Diaz, I think he's valuable to us... he's a top four defenceman... one of only 2 RH shots on the team... and he brings offence, which 3 of our guys don't really (unless Emelin suddenly shows what he did in Russia, cause he hasn't brought it in the NHL yet).
-
Boosted the lineup to the point hey are down 5-0 to Columbus
-
They may not be better bets than the vets come playoff time (given where they are in their development right now). However, this is why i want to see them in the lineup now.... after 40-50 games in the NHL they might be better bets come playoff time IMO. Plus next year you may need to break in 2 rookies. Better to do one this year and one next IMO. Sitting Bouillion and Murray both, and playing the rookie doesn't hurt our playoff chances this year IMO. As for Pateryn, he is the best of the three in the AHL. I'm not sure he'd be the best of the three in the NHL though, I'd give all three a shot and then run the one who plays the best for the last 40 games.
-
Unfortunately that "something" is usually injuries.... Bournival will get top 9 time and White his minutes before we know it.
-
It was unsustainable in 2010 too. Philly series showed that. I think part of us all knew that the 2010 team was both playing well and getting their fair share of luck along the way. We don't win if Washington and Pittsburgh got anything resembling reliable goaltending... not great, just reliable. Fleury in particular gave up some stinkiers, including a memorable one to Tom pyatt in game 5 and his whole game 7 performance.
-
Thats still only one end of the spectrum... and montreal is about even in both Corsi and Fenwick. The Leafs are both getting amazing goaltending, and getting other teams to play awful.
