Pierre the Great
Talk about a denier. http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/ap/world/4597277.html Historians say some 200,000 women — mostly from Korea and China — served in the Japanese military brothels throughout Asia in the 1930s and 1940s. Witnesses, victims and even some former Japanese soldiers say many of the women were kidnapped or otherwise forced into brothels, where they could be raped by scores of soldiers a day. Abe on Thursday said there is no proof the women were forced into prostitution: "The fact is, there is no evidence to prove there was coercion." His statement contradicted evidence in Japanese documents unearthed in 1992 that historians said showed military authorities had a direct role in working with contractors to forcibly procure women for the brothels, known as "comfort stations." The remark also cast doubt on a 1993 Japanese government apology to the sex slaves.
JLP
If there were Denial Olympics, Japan would take the gold every time. Here for a long time and still confounded by this puerile and obstinate refusal to take responsibility or admit mistakes. Japanese will say they 'regret' the war, the underlying meaning -- they regret they lost hehehe, have no feeling that they did anything wrong. Young generations have a total lack of knowledge on the Rape of Nanjing or other Japanese war atrocities, but can recite to the last detail the horrors of Hiroshima. Victim culture. The Germans apologized post WWII, now they are accepted by their European neighbors. Japan did not and continues to be a pariah state in Asia. Abe's latest crack won't help. Pierre the Great
Yeah everyone loves the Germans now. I dunno the ultra conservatives in Japan now have an ally in Abe so maybe just maybe the conservatives can be dethroned.
JLP
Abe is the grandson of former prime minister Nobusuke Kishi, arrested for war crimes after WWII. Abe is on record saying that the 14 executed Class A War Criminals, including Hideo Tojo, are not considered war criminals in Japan. He regularly pays homage to their spirits at the Yasukuni war shrine. (Imagine the German Canceller laying a wreath at Hitler's grave hehehe.) Somehow Japan gets away with this, shows how useful it can be to have the USA on your side?
Bacchus
I live in Korea, and I can tell you that they are pretty pissed with the Japanes ... and this is just going to make it worse. There is a lot of tension, a lot of anger, and a lack of hope for the future here.
Pierre the Great
I think Japan can get away with these stunts because of the pacifist constitution, but they can't keep doing this. The problem is this isn't Uganda or Iran. This is Japan, just like its China, Israel and the United States. Pretty much if you are important to the world you get a pass on things (why no sanctions on America during segregation?). Basically Japan is too crucial to be slapped with something. Its got to happen from within. (See Germany and denying the Holocaust which is a crime now). Until the conservatives aren't kicked out of power (which has like never happened in Japan.) Nothing will change it will only get worse.
Pierre the Great
The Backlash continues: Growing chorus slams war-brothel remarks "Anyone who doubts that the Japanese army forced Asian women into sexual slavery in World War II should "face the truth," South Korea's foreign minister said Friday as outrage grew over comments by Japan's prime minister that there was no evidence of the enslavement." But one of the harshest comments came from 81-year-old Hilaria Bustamante of Manila, who said she was kept as a sex slave in a Japanese garrison for a year in 1942 as a 16-year-old. "What he (Abe) said has angered me," she said. "They think we are just like toilet paper that they can throw away after being used." http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070302/ap_on_...apan_sex_slaves

Pierre the Great
Japan refuses sex slave apology Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe says Japan will not issue another apology for its World War II military brothels. Mr Abe said none of the testimony in recent US Congress hearings showed solid proof prostitutes were abused. Elaborating on comments he made last week, he said he would not go beyond a 1993 apology on the issue, even if Washington asked for one. Many historians say Japan compelled up to 200,000 women, mostly Chinese and Korean, to become sex slaves. But some Japanese scholars deny that force was used to round up the women, blaming private contractors for any abuses. Last Thursday Mr Abe sided with these critics, saying there was "no evidence to prove there was coercion". http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/6418337.stm
