Defenceman reluctant to unload slapshots during optional workout at Bell Centre

Sheldon Souray's upper-body injury has been confirmed, sort of, as a wrist problem.

The all-star defenceman returned to practice yesterday at the Bell Centre and, while nobody in the organization elaborated on the nature of the injury, he was wearing extra tape on the left wrist that has gone through four operations, including the surgery that kept him on the sidelines all of last season.

Souray might have shed some light on the injury and his availability for tomorrow night's road game against the New York Islanders, but he played quick-change artist after the optional workout and disappeared without sharing his thoughts. A team official said Souray had an appointment.

Rick Green, the Canadiens' assistant coach in charge of the defence, said Souray seemed to be skating well, but conceded the rearguard was reluctant to wind up with his slapshot. With the Canadiens already assured of a playoff berth, Souray should be regarded as no better than questionable for the Islanders game.

Good turnout for optional skate: Goaltender José Theodore said he decided to practise yesterday because he wants to stay sharp with the playoffs around the corner.

That point of view proved popular with his teammates as 12 players joined him on the ice. Defenceman Patrice Brisebois, who has been hampered by a groin injury, skated by himself earlier in the day and another four or five players worked on off-ice conditioning in the Bell Centre gymnasium.

Theodore said he was feeling confident as the Canadiens return to the playoffs after a one-year absence.

"I'm where I want to be at this time of the year," said Theodore, who turned in a strong performance Saturday night in Boston, where he stopped 36 of 39 shots in a 3-2 overtime loss.

"We've lost three games in a row and we need to finish strong this week so that we have some momentum going into the playoffs."

The Canadiens finish the regular season with home games against Philadelphia Thursday and Buffalo Saturday.

Islanders still outside: The Islanders are hoping to wrap up the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. They are three points up on the ninth-place Sabres with each team having three games left.

Sweaters go to good cause: The Canadiens' jerseys from their

Jan. 24 game against the Toronto Maple Leafs are for sale on e-Bay. The proceeds from the sale will go to the Ahuntsic Braves minor hockey organization.

The auction is a co-operative effort between the Canadiens and the National Hockey League Players' Association whose Goals and Dreams program is designed to help disadvantaged youngsters play hockey.

The Ahuntsic organization was selected as the beneficiary of this particular sale because it has a history of helping youngsters who wouldn't ordinarily be able to afford to play the game.
