Socialists urge end to riots in France

PARIS - The leader of France's defeated Socialists appealed for calm Tuesday after a second night of post-election violence left cars burned and store windows smashed.

While the unrest has been small-scale, it sent a message to Nicolas Sarkozy: He may have won the presidency, but he hasn't won over the many French who consider him — and his free-market reforms and tough line on crime and immigration — frighteningly brutal.

Sarkozy, who beat Socialist Segolene Royal in a runoff Sunday, is a divisive figure whose tough language and crackdowns on crime and immigration have angered many on the left — and in the immigrant-heavy suburban housing projects that erupted in riots in 2005. An anti-Sarkozy rally in Paris was planned for Tuesday afternoon.

Some 730 cars were burned nationwide Sunday night and 592 people arrested, police said.

Late Monday night, several hundred people massed again at the Place de la Bastille in Paris, breaking windows in nearby shops and starting street fires. Riot police dispersed them, and about 100 people were arrested, police said Tuesday. A handful of cars were ignited in the area.

One police officer was slightly injured and eight cars and two scooters were torched, according to the Paris police headquarters. Police officials said the perpetrators appeared to be anarchists and far leftists.

well one thing I admire about the french is that the politicians pay attention to what's on the street. But too much street politics isn't a good thing. There must be a balance.

The street and the people in the suits have to come to an understanding at one point because when the street has too much power, anarchy sets in.

Now the US the street has no power. Its merely laughed at by the suits. And that's not good either because it leads to cynics and people become apathetic and then do not participate in democracy.

I wasn't talking about that kind of street violence. More of protesting. In France politicians actually listen to what the people at the protests are wanting. (and it works in Canada too, think of student strikes).

Here in the states the politicians just go on Fox News and mock them or where ever. Protesting here is pointless because nobody is listening.

Oh god, that reminds me of when there was a "student strike" back when I was in Grade 9.

well at least they got heard. I believe they protested the unfreezing of tuition fees by the Liberals (conservatives) after they swept to power.

If anyone talks about 'freezing tuition here' they're deemed a communist.

So it's gotten to the point that I can go to another country to go to school cheaper then my in state university.

University now is for a select few.

when I was in community college they had a rally to bring the troops home, 5 people showed up and they canceled the event.

and a teacher at my high school got fired because he wouldn't succumb to black mail by the archdiocese so the students had a sit in.

It lasted 15 minutes. They got hungry.

Sure, a large, varied and high quality food court would certainly settle down the palestenians. No more motivation to suicide bomb jews when you are digesting that delicious quiznos sub you just had.

Pierre, during the Quebec student strike you speak so fondly of there were masked deliquents (oo I mean "activists") running around french universities like UQAM and laval vandalizing property, setting off fire alarms and storming into classrooms to intimidate people who were still carrying on their lessons. At the english universities we didnt care and just ignored the whole thing lol.

Making the Middle East into a big mall probably would have cost less than the invasion and occupation of Iraq, with fewer lives lost and more jobs for locals, and yes, quiznos subs for all (but no bacon)!
