Kyle Chipchura

Name: Kyle Chipchura

Position: Center

DOB: February 19, 1986

Height: 6-3

Weight: 200

Shoots: Left

Hometown: Vimy, Alberta, Canada

Team: Prince Albert Raiders

Profile:

Picked by the Raiders first overall in the 2001 WHL Bantam Draft. A very complete, two-way player. Budding power forward. Has very good instincts. Is like a shark on the ice. Appears from seemingly nowhere, arriving in the precise spot where his presence will create an impact. Has no real flaws in his game. Very crisp passes. Skates strong and has quickness. Very adept stickhandler. Has good defensive awareness and forechecks hard. Willing to drop the gloves, whether sticking up for himself or teammate.

Last season he registered 30 points in 63 games with 89 PIM’s. This season, he upped those numbers to 15 goals and 33 assists to go along with 118 PIM’s, in 64 games. In the opening round of the playoffs he was voted 1st Star Of Game 5, tallying 1 goal, 4 assists and a penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct, for good measure. Continued development could lead to him becoming the premiere power forward from the 2004 Entry Draft.

Told you so: Goalies making the leap with ease

By Kyle Woodlief, Special to USATODAY.com

Prince Albert's Kyle Chipchura is a bit of an enigma to RLR. In our most recent viewing, he once again didn't do much, but we can still see why he's a top 15 talent. Skating was a bit better than expected. Is dangerous every shift, and has that "hunter" look when he's on the ice, just looking for a place to make the big play. Very good puck handler, and can make some nice moves at top speed. Very confident on the ice. Our impression was that he's a bit of a floater, until he turned it on in the third period. Also stood up for a teammate when there was a knee-on-knee hit — that's something we always want to see.

Chipchura has been invited to the U-20 camp in August, we haven't had much luck with getting players on Team Canada's U-20.

Chipchura is coming off a solid effort at the U-18's, 2nd on the team in scoring (5 pts), led the team in pims, and PP goals, tied in GW goals.

I was hoping for Korpikoski, oh well.

History

Chipchura had a career year in the WHL… suffered a groin injury which kept him out of the Top Prospects game in London, ON…Played for Canada at the U18 Championships in Belarus.

Talent Analysis

A big, strong 2-way centre with some offensive upside but who many project to be a third liner in the NHL. Chipchura’s biggest asset is his strength, which makes him an ideal checking forward and a good penalty killer. He’s a player who is solid in all areas of the game but doesn’t really stand out in any one specific aspect. Highly regarded all year by some scouting services, many feel he’s been overrated at times and his performance in Belarus for Canada was not very noteworthy.

“He played one really good game and that was against Sweden but against USA and Denmark he did nothing,” said one scout. “Foot speed is going to be a concern.”

“I think you’ll see some team take him on reputation alone but he’s not going to be any more then a 3rd line player,” commented another scout. “He played on the 3rd line at this U18 tournament! He played a 3rd line-checking role and when they played USA and were beat by them, he really wasn’t a factor at all.”

Future

Quite possibly the player who slips the furthest in the first round from his ranked position heading into the draft (4th in NA by CSS), Chipchura will still be taken because he is a dependable forward with good size. He is the kind of player who goes on to have a long, if not outstanding, professional career.

From TSN,ca:

18. Montreal - KYLE CHIPCHURA, C, Prince Albert

Lowdown: Fourth-ranked North American prospect lists Peter Forsberg as his favorite player, which is appropriate for a center who plays well at both ends of the ice. Solid faceoff man, he sees action in all game situations. While not a smooth skater, he has above-average speed and is hard to knock off his skates. Scouts praise his character and call him a "team player." Had three goals and two assists in seven games at the World Junior Championships but missed the Top Prospects Game due to injury. Was NHL Central Scouting's top-ranked North American prospect at midseason.

If you are looking for a guy who does a lot of little things right, you've come to the right place.

Kyle Chipchura wins faceoffs, checks well, kills penalties and has good hockey sense. His downside? He isn't expected to be a big scorer at the next level.

"I don't think he has that kind of finish around the net," said a scout. Chipchura helped himself at the world under-18 tournament by being one of Canada's top players. Earlier this season, Chipchura was in the running to be picked in the top 10, but disappeared in the eyes of some scouts.

"He was really good in the first half and then he slipped," said a scout. "Then he was good late to save his year."

Chipchura is pegged to be a third-line NHL player who will get the job done. "He can check well and kill penalties," said another scout. "He has some offensive upside, but he'll have to work on it."

Skating isn't a problem and scouts like his hockey sense and the fact he goes hard.

Chipchura is a perfect fit

a) He is big and plays down the middle

B) Brings much needed grit and leadership to the team

c) A nice change from the high-skilled, questionable character forward we've drafted recently.

Trevor Linden sounds perfect to me. I'd rather have a Linden who brings a complete game, rather then some one-dimentional European floater.
