There would a cost attached to LA retaining $2m for more 7 years, even if Anderson only has 3 more years left.  The shorter term wouldn't make up for the skill difference and retention alone.  You'd also have to believe there's no way LA sells PLD low after paying so much for him just last off-season.

Anderson's value is at it's lowest point now, after last season.

both players are at their lowest value and are reclamation projects. If there are not physical or mental health issues or substance dependencies, the trade makes sense:

LAK gets a player at a lower cap, with less term that under the right circumstances may help them in the playoffs since he has performed well there in the past when he was clicking

MTL gets a center with size and who is not prone to injury locked up for a long time and with good potential under the right coaching, It is a high risk/reward bet. With salary retention, he becomes an excellent option at 3C, on the power play, and as a good option for 1C/2C if there are injuries. This is one player the Habs can sign because of Price's LTIR

Both guys are in a Jonathan Drouin situation, back when MB acquired him. There was a reason TB was moving a 23-year-old 3rd overall pick. His relationship with management had soured - but also they may have wisely discerned that he was a basket case.

Normally a 23-25 year old C with high pedigree is not going to be available at all, if their team has no concerns about them. (Exceptions do arise, e.g., the Black Hawks dumping Dach).

I'd be worried about that trade disrupting our salary structure - Suzuki should be our highest-paid guy - but would probably make the deal. I don't see LA making it, though. Sure, they are relieved of five years of PLD's contract on the back end, but they want to contend now. This deal would commit them to $7 mil in cap costs over the next three years without making them a better team. That doesn't make sense to a team that wants to contend.

I thought about trading Dvorak to them, but he would not fit in their cap. Also, they seem to have young Cs that can probably take the 3C

With LAK retaining salary, PLD would fall under the cap hit of Suzuki and others

For LAK, Anderson would provide the physicality PLD sometimes provides, in a contending team he would produce at 20g40p rate which is fine on a 3rd line. He would do well in the playoffs for them.

I also doubt LAK makes this trade, but I can make the argument and feel it is possible and not too far fetched

And using $8.5m of your cap (would also be the highest paid player)( for a third line centre isn’t costly?? We need to boast the second line, and add more scoring. Don’t necessarily need a centre as the priority. If we do get a centr it’s someone go can be a 1b type of second line centre and then Dach can play the wing.

those two aren’t the only two options. PLD is with his third team and has yet to have a good year where he was a consistently good player for the ENTIRE season.

    We were talking trade, right?

Like, either the LAK retains salary, and we do something like:

to MTL: PLD ($8.5M/8yrs), I would be fine with $2M retained over those two years

    to LAK: Anderson ($5.5M/3yr)

Straight up, one for one with the salary retention. If LAK are not willing to do the salary retention, I would ask for one of their draft picks or prospects to take on salary. With Price on LTIR the habs can take this salary.

From TVA Sports, via Google translate:

Oliver Kapanen's head coach at KalPa in the Liiga, Petri Karjalainen:  “You hit the jackpot with Oliver,” he said. "What I told him at our last team dinner was: “First, win a spot with Finland at the World Hockey Championship and second, make sure that in October you play in Montreal.

    ...

The rumour is that Kapanen will sign with the Canadiens, but will play one last season in Europe once his camp is over in Montreal, if he does not obtain a position in the NHL, of course.

    ...

In the home stretch of the season and during the playoffs, he was the best player in the League,” said the hockey man, without an ounce of hesitation in his voice. "If he continues on this path and continues to make giant strides, he will at least be close to a position in Montreal. I don’t see why he wouldn’t be involved in a hot fight.”

    ...

He's a kind of Sebastian Aho, Karjalainen continued. “Aho and Kapanen have similar strengths. These are two players who are not necessarily spectacular, but very effective in both directions of the ice. You win hockey games with players like them in your club. Oliver will not lead the first line in Montreal, but he can become a second or third line center for a while."

I have said before that I think is is a "dark horse" prospect like Struble was. Not talked about too much but developing very well.

But those names had nothing to do with "sentimentalism towards the history of the franchise or are any interest in dipping into nepotism" ... nor did I ever suggest that Koivu Jr would or should in any way be favoured by HuGo et al ... he had been described as "81st, so a NHL long shot depth player" and the names were just intended to point out that picks in the early-80s have panned out in the past and that is why teams still draft instead of just passing.

I wanted the Habs to pick David Spacek last year.

I still do not believe HughGort cares much for nepo-babies.

Longer shot for certain ... but Alexei Zhitnik, Joe Juneau and Steve Kasper were 81st overall picks ... Brian Gionta and Adam Henrique were 82nd ... and Matthew Barnaby and Matt Murray were 83rd overall picks ... so, there is always HOPE.

I do not believe HughGort have any sentimentalism towards the history of the franchise or are any interest in dipping into nepotism.

I think that ship is parked on the marketing department and away from hockey decision.

I'm not rooting for Roy. While he was a superb player for the Habs, ultimately he put himself ahead of the team and left. It wasn't all him, but the decision was his. Had he stayed, we might have won another Cup.

I understand the situation, so I'm not holding a grudge, but neither am I going to root for him.

I am rooting for Roy, very unlikely he wins this series, but I am rooting for him.

He is a passionate hockey "lifer" and has a very intense coaching style, while showing his deep knowledge-of and respect-for the game in interviews. I think he is an interesting coach to follow.

Both Kovacevic and Barron are affordable RD choices. And neither one is old, especially for D--Kovacevic is still only 26. I think either one could be a fit for the Habs' D corps, but probably not both. The decision between the two will depend not only on their skills but also on which style (offensive or defensive) is a better fit--and which of the two will have better trade value.

But, yes, I agree that both can be credible NHL D-men, although probably not both of them in Montreal.

don't forget that MTL is cursed and that key players get hurt at the worst of times. Having extra depth on RD can only be positive

I agree there is hope, you just have more of that hope than I do.

If the plan is to move Guhle back to the left side that would leave Reinbacker, Mailloux, Kovasevic, Barron. With Harris as a pivot.

    Barron has opportunities there

Guhle is more effective on LD. Once Savard is moved or retires (if he stays) Reinbacher, Mailloux, and Barron would be a solid RD. With Kovacevic as a ackup in case of injuries, if he is not traded by that time.

Of course, it depends on how well they all develop

This makes perfect sense and I expect it will be how HuGo approach it.

I know that I’m in the minority here but I think Kovacevic is far ahead of Barron.

Kovasevic is pushing the boundaries of second pairing (he can’t handle it yet).

Barron is pushing the boundaries of #7 Dman

    IMO

If you take their age difference as an indicator of the potential for the younger one to improve. Kovacevic (26) has had 4 more years than Barron (22) to develop.

    At 22, Kovacevic was in the AHL: 29Games 2g 12a 14pts

    Barron's combined AHL;NHL:       80Games 9g 15a 24pts

So, IMHO, there is hope for Barron.

  11. 14 minutes ago, Prime Minister Koivu said:

Im not sure that Barron has a NHL career, I think he is on the borderline.

Having said that, I noticed an improvement in his Dzone play when he got called up in the late season. He made simple box out plays and was much better at covering his man.

Maybe he has enough growth left to have a bottom pairing role.

in my potato head eyes, he would be a good replacement for Kovacevic down the road.

  12. I watched the end of the NYI game. I am cheering for St-Patrick.

They were in defending mode early in the 3rd and static in their zone (per RDS commentators) ; so at that point I thought that they may screw up. But I was still hoping for a main for them.

    10 hours ago, Sir_Boagalott said:

Well, that certainly wasn't what I tuned in to see.  Geez, what a collapse that was.  After the Laffs game I put on the NYI vs Cannes game.

When I put the game on it was 3-2 NYI with about 3:30 mins left. After watching for 1 min the Cannes scored to tie it up and then 10 seconds later they scored again to go up 4-3. They got an empty netter 1 min later. Apparently, the NYI were up 3-0 before the 3rd period started and only had a few shots on net the entire period. The Cannes are now up 2-0 in the series.

I will never understand the hate until they elimintate us.   This is why I want them to clear Boston.  Once this is done,  they can get beaten by anyone else, but I don't want the Bruins anywhere near another Stanley Cup.

yes, I don't that  little puk :1vomit: Marchand anywhere near the cup.

  14. Last game with the Habs organization for Norlinder, Cederqvist, Durandeau, Bourque, Galipeau, Andersson

  15. Joshua Roy is suspended by the league for tonight's game for an elbow in yesterday's game

That doesn't necessarily mean there is no chance of his trading a "crown jewel" ... just means his price point would be higher.

are you saying that there is a chance of trading a "crown jewel" (if I take out the double negative), or with the qualifier "necessarily", that it is necessary that he trades a "corwn jewel" at a higher point?

IMHO, there is no rush to move any of the young Ds before the return for Savard is maximized. Then, a decision on any of the prospects will be easier to take with more games to base a decision on.

  17. some disappointment among the Laval Rocket veterans, feeling that some of the veterans that didn;t play may have done better than a few of the 10 rookies that played tonight.
