20.mtl.gif Montreal (from San Jose): David Fischer, D, Apple Valley (USHSW) -- 6-3, 185 R

Fischer succeeded Ottawa Senators prospect Brian Lee as the 2006 recipient of Minnesota's Mr. Hockey award as the top high-school player in the state... will attend the University of Minnesota in 2006-07... displays the all-around ability from the blueline that scouts love... skates extremely well and is capable of logging huge minutes... needs to make a smooth transition from high-school hockey to the WCHA... must add more bulk to maximize his pro potential... should spend at least two years with the Golden Gophers before turning pro... his right-handedness adds to his overall value...

From NHL Central Scouting - Strong skater with a wide base, quick first two steps and his pivots and turns are sharp allowing him to gain time and space...has excellent balance, soft hands and a lot of confidence in his skill when rushing the puck...reads and reacts well to the play at hand...blocks shots and plays in all games situations.

From ISS: A workhorse who's only going to get better. An offensive d-men who opened many eyes this year thanks to improved defensive play and excellent puck skills. Fischer played in a relatively poor competitive level but his skill level can't go unnoticed. Has a hard, heavy shot from the point that helps make him a tremendous PP triggerman.

From TSN: Won Mr. Hockey Award, given to the outstanding senior boys high school hockey player in the state of Minnesota and named St. Paul Pioneer Press boys hockey player of the year...played in the Upper Midwest High School Elite League for St. Paul...battled through a difficult flu, hip pointer and his mothers' battle with breast cancer to captain his high school team to knock off Bloomington Jefferson and heavily favored Academy of Holy Angels in the Section 5AA semifinals in Minnesota High School Tourney...will attend the University of Minnesota.

21. nyr.gif Rangers: Bob Sanguinetti, D, Owen Sound (OHL) -- 6-1, 174 R

22. phi.gif Philadelphia: Claude Giroux, RW, Gatineau (QMJHL) -- 5-11, 169 R

23. wsh.gif Washington (from NAS Brendan Witt trade): Semen Varlamov, G, YAROSLAVL 2

24. buf.gif Buffalo: Dennis Persson, D, Vasteras (Sweden) -- 6-1, 181 L

25. stl.gif St. Louis (from New Jersey): Patrik Berglund, C, Vasteras (Sweden) -- 6-4, 187 L

26. cgy.gif Calgary: Leland Irving, G, Everett (WHL) -- 6-0, 177 L

27. dal.gif Dallas: Ivan Vishnevskiy, D, Rouyn-Noranda (QMJHL) -- 5-11, 176 L

28. ott.gif Ottawa: Nick Foligno, LW, Sudbury (OHL) -- 6-0, 188 L

29. phx.gif Phoenix (from Detroit): Chris Summers, D/F, USNTDP (NAHL) -- 6-2, 180 L

30. njd.gif New Jersey (from St. Louis (from Carolina in the Doug weight trade)): Matthew Corrente, D, Saginaw (OHL) -- 6-0, 189 R

ROUND 2

31. St. Louis: Tomas Kana, C, HC Vitkovice (Cze-Rep.)

32. Pittsburgh: Carl Sneep, D, Brainerd (USHSW)

33. Chicago: gif.gif Igor Makarov, RW, Krylia Sovetov

34. Washington: Michal Neuwirth, G, Sparta (Cze Jr.)

35. Washington:: Francois Bouchard, RW, Baie-Comeau (QMJHL)

36. San Jose: Jamie McGinn, LW, Ottawa (OHL)

37. Boston: Yuri Alexandrov, D, Severstal Cherepovets (Rus)

38. Anaheim: Bryce Swan, RW, Halifax (QMJHL)

39. Philadelphia: Andreas Nodl, RW, Sioux Falls (USHL)

40. MInnesota:Ondrej Fiala, C, Everett (WHL)

41. Detroit: Cory Emmerton, C, Kingston (OHL)

42. Philadelphia: Michael Ratchuk, D, US Nat'l Team (U18)

43. Atlanta :

44. Toronto:

45. Edmonton:

46. Buffalo

47. Phoenix

48. Los Angeles:

49. Montreal: arrowright_black.gifgif.gif Ben Maxwell, C, Kootenay (WHL)

Scouting Report: In his second WHL campaign, Maxwell recorded 60 points in 69 games for the Ice. He then tied Ryan Russell for the team lead with eight points in six postseason games... can do a little bit of everything, but doesn't do it consistently enough to be considered one of the top prospects available in 2006... skates very well and understands the game with or without the puck... must take the next step with Kootenay in order to cement his prospect status... needs to get physically stronger so as to continue playing a rugged style in the pros...

50. Boston:

51. Colorado:

52. Washington:

53. Montreal: Mathieu Carle, D, Acadie-Bathurst (QMJHL)

Not to be confused with 2006 Hobey Baker winner Matt Carle (San Jose Sharks), this Matt Carle is a bigger, right-handed version of the slick offensive defenseman out of Denver University. Like the Sharks prospect, Carle has great vision, makes a terrific first pass out of the defensive zone and owns tremendous offensive potential... led the Titan defensemen, and ranked seventh among all QMJHL rearguards, in scoring with 69 points in 67 games in 2005-06... owns great size for the blueline position, but must start utilizing better judgment when in the defensive zone in order to avoid the tag of power-play specialist...

54. Rangers:

55. Philadelphia:

56. Nashville:

57. Buffalo:

58. New Jersey:

59. Colorado:

60. Islanders:

61. Chicago:

62. Detroit:

63. Ottawa

Tanguay traded to Calgary!!!!

They trade a superstar to a division rival for Leopold and a 2nd. I feel bad for the new Avs GM as he got seriously schooled. I feel bad for you Jetsniper. The hilairous part is that Colorado had to dump salary BECAUSE THEY HAVE THEO!

" Wow... for a while there I though the Blues' first pick was Jarmo Kukkolanen or something!"

The same thing happened to me. I was shocked for a second.

Chicago on the clock. Since they got Jack Skille, who has issues with Kessel, I doubt the Hawks will pick Kessel. I think they'll go with Toews instead.

Kessel then might fall on the Caps' lap. I wonder if they'll pick him or go with a playmaker for Ovechkin and draft Backstrom instead.

Caps on the clock.

Kessel or Backstrom?

Is Ovechkin popular or what?

Caps pick Backstrom. Should make a nice combo with Ovechkin for some years.

Kessel still on the board. Wow. Talk about being humbled. Looks like he's falling on Boston's lap.

You guys are my eyes, ears, and - because I know little about the prospects available - my brain.

To think, I go home to no satellite tv and dialup internet the day before the draft. I should have stayed in Toronto.
