I find it strange that, these days, for something to be humourous, it almost seems that 'swearing' is a necessity.:huh:

It's not so much that swearing is the issue itself but the apparent 'gotta have' the words: f-ck, motherf-cker, c-cks-cker, c-nt, :o etc. in the text of the humour to make it laughable.

If those words aren't specifically in there, they are in a not-so-subtle implied manner.

I don't 'long for the good old days of clean humour' as such as I am amazed by the seeming necessity to be 'vulgar' for humour to be funny. :o

:king: :hlogo: :king:

I find it funny, shortcat, that you use the phrase "these days". Swearing in comedy is nothing new at all. Lets go back to the now famous list of seven words you can't say on TV as presented on George Carlin's 1972 comedy album "Class Clown".

*ahem*

1. Shit

2. Piss

3. Fcuk

4. C-nt

5. C-cks-cker

6. M-therf-cker

7. ####

Later, he added fart, turd and twat and in 1976 was arrested in Milwaukee for performing said monologue. All from a legendary comedian (voted #2 best all-time stand-up comedian). I guess nowadays you can attribute it to so-called "black humor" with people such as Dave Chapelle, Chris Rock and going further back, Richard Pryor (voted #1 best all-time stand-up comedian). Also, talking with Chapelle's show, it takes aim at racial stereotypes in America and if you think vulgarity isn't apart of it then you're crazy.

Anyway, what I'm getting at is that it's not there just for being there. Comedians don't sit at home coming up with their skits trying to decide when to add in f*cker and bitch and all that. It's just who they are and it comes out when they perform their sketch. I've seen some of Chris Rock (he's REALLY bad for it) and Dane Cook's sketches multiple times and sometimes a part of the show will go cuss-free and other times it will have some mixed in. It just varies from show to show and depends on the comedian.

I agree with the THese DAYS Dipute. Swearing in comedy has been going on for years and years anless your 100 and we are comparing things to abbott and costelo, Laraul and Hardy, The three Stooges...SP??????? A well placed ###### makes me piss my pants every time. What really blows my mind is the swearing that gets beeped out on normal T.V. Mtv, VH1, various commercials. Not just a beep either. You can hear a very loud FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFbeepKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK, and it's constant. All day long on these dumb reality shows.

All in all, we hear these words everyday on the street, in our minds, classrooms, grocery stores.........I don't know why people act like hearing the word ###### on TV is like hearing the word ###### in church. Not really all that crazy either.

The problem today with swear words is it's disrespectful at times. The way T.V is getting only shows that people don't really have much respect left for each other. It's all about money and what will sell.
