Should Theo be traded for Luongo?

If you are going to trade Theodore, then I want Luongo in return. I don't think any team, other than Florida has what the habs need if they trade Theo. I'm more interested in Bouwmeester; I think this guy will one day win the Norris trophy. I would trade anyone on the Habs to get Bouwmeester and Luongo. I don't think there is anyone on the habs who is untouchable. I would even try to expand the deal to include Stephen Weiss and Nathan Hortan. Mike Keenan loves to bring in his own guys, and I'm not sure he's a big fan of these guys. I just keep thinking of Chelios, Pronger and Bertuzzi, who Keenan picked up for popular guys like Savard, Shannahan and Linden. When it comes to iron Mike, nothing surprises me. He's either a madman or a genius.

Every team he has played on since he was 14 has missed the playoffs, until he was traded to Chicago at the end of the last AHL season for their playoff run. Then he went on to score 0 points in about a dozen AHL playoff games. Can you imagine a top 3 draft prospect going about 8 seasons without ever making the playoffs? Has yet to record even a single playoff point at a level higher than Midget? Something wrong there.

Beckham... Have you ever watched him play? What about the success of the world cup and world juniors. This guy has always played with guys much older than he was. Most defenseman mature at an older age and this guy is like 22. Imagine him in a few years and on a better team. There must be a reason Gretzky picked him ahead of Souray for team Canada. Oh yeah, he's much better.

Regardless of his lack of points or lack of playoff experience, I would take Bouwmeester in a heart beat. He is big, fast and makes good passes out of the zone and with this "New" NHL he should pick up a bushel of points. As for the playoffs, yes he has not made it but again you can't blame that on 1 player. It is a team sport and he has been " Blessed " with playing on shitty teams. Can't blame him on that one. I may try to package Markov and Ryder for Bouwmeester and Weiss. This would give both teams fair value. Markov has disappointed me so far and he fakes a bit too much. He must produce this year or I would ship him as he will never progress into what we thought he would. Anyways, Go Habs Go !!

Bouwmeester does great in international competition, and I'm sure he would be a superstar in almost any European league, but he lacks something as an NHL player. For Team Canada on international ice, all he has to do is skate. Which is about all he does at the best of times.

Malkin is a much better prospect in my eyes, and considering the current situation in Pittsburgh (and Russia), is much more likely to be available at a reasonable price.

At his age most defenceman would be playing in the AHL. This guy is top 8 in Canada and moving up. How can you say he lacks something as an NHLer. The world cup was played in North America with NHL rules. What do you know that Gretzky, Lowe and Quinn do not. Then again, you think Pittsburg is going to trade Malkin.

Why is that any more ludicrous than Keenan trading his "franchise" defenseman or goaltender while they are in their early 20's? At least Boumeester and Luongo aren't signed to play in Europe with no definite date of return set....

Markov has not underperformed. He's been our second best defenseman and he's still young too. I'd rather have Malkin than Bouwmeester. I watched him in the WJC last year and he was amazing. He played better than Ovechkin and the others. This kid can deke and he might have fun with Ribeiro and Perezhogin.

But I'd be happy to have Bouwmeester too. Assuming we lose a defenseman or two in the deal. We just have too many.

What I don't want to see is Theo gone and Thibault back in Montreal. We lose the third-best goalie in the world (I don't care what you say) and the (second?) best rookie of 2003. Those are our two most popular assets that other GMs look into. We can get better than Thibault, Morozov and Malkin (as much as I like him.)

Anybody here understand (or rather thinks they have a rational explanation for) what Keenan is doing?

I don't get it. Pissing off your star goalie like that!!!! His agent is now talking more and more of a trade. What's the deal. You figure with a guy like Luongo on your team, you thank your lucky stars and treat him right. What's with this 3.?M/yr multiyear offer or worse taking him to arbitration and suggesting 2 point something. Luongo wasn't being unreasonable, he just wants his market value.....and Luongo is one of very few players that actually is worth (cause of what he brings to a team) his full market value. I don't get Keenan. Guess he feels that star goalies aren't that important to a team as to warrant a big piece of the cap pie. I think he is dead wrong!

I'd also forget about Luongo in Montreal (although I would love it). Keenan doesn't want to pay more for Theo than what he's willing to dish out for Luongo. I think Luongo will be dealt within the next two years but it will be for a player playing a position that Keenan feels is more "important". The Luongo to Mtl rumours were started by his agent (a Montrealer) to try get things moving with Florida. That's all.

If the Luongo, Theodore deal was straight up I'd go for it in a heartbeat. Luongo is atleast as good as Theodore, probably better, which he's proven with Team Canada and has pretty much beat him out of the backup goalie spot. Theodore is the 3 rd goalie.

Luongo is younger, and at $8 Million over the next two years and maybe $5 million each for 2 years after that, would be a savings over Theodore of at least $2 Million total or as much as $4 Million for the next 4 years.

Anyways if Keenan doesn't want to pay Luongo more than $2.1 million per season or whatever it was, then why would he accept Theodore in trade at more than $5 Million, and to add on to that Michael Ryder at $1.1 Million + per season? This just doesn't make sense.

There is no point in dealing Theodore for Luongo, it is a sideways move, and as far as I know Theodore is not unhappy in Montreal. Although I'm sure he would love to live in Florida.

I say Ryder for Morozov + a pick, or perhaps an insurance netminder like Andy Chiodo.

Ummmm, excuse me...but Newfy is not exactly a word that should be brought up into this forum. I'd appreciate if this was removed from your post. i'm originally from Newfoundland and don't appreciate the negative connotations it brigns

sportsnet is reporting that Luongo refused a 5 year / 25M offer from Florida minutes before arbitration. Same article states that Luongo is rumoured to be requesting a trade.

I can only speculate, but it seems, from the outside, that Roberto is extremely upset with the disrespect Keenan has showed him by bringing him to arbitration and seems to want nothing more to do with the Panthers. It's looking like Luongo will be traded (and I don't think mtl will be the destination).

If this happens, Keenan should be fired. I can't even begin to imagine what he was trying to do playing Luongo like that. Figure he just stupidly tried to play hard ball in negociations and it backfired. Letting relations with your young FRANCHISE goalie get to this point is unexcusable. This is horrible management from Keenan. If Keenan is now forced to deal Luongo, the Panthers should deal Keenan to the garbage can.

Ryder for Morozov? Are you nuts? This kid Ryder is dynamite. Every habs fan I know loved watching him play last year. A young gunner with a nose for the net from down East? Sounds good to me.:hlogo:

Luongo isn't requesting a trade.

In a sportcentre interview he said he's gonna play this year in Florida but in the future he's not sure. He made it sound as though he already decided this is his last contarct.

Could we please let the team play without trying to trade everybody. Unless the Habs get a special player I want to see Bob sign our RFA's and stand pat. If he brings back Thibault and dumps Theo I'll become a Leafs fan... no.... a Panthers fan...:) if Houle couldnt drive me away then nothing will

I agree 100%. We have a very good young team. Let these boys play and see what happens. If Bob sees an opportunity to improve the team down the road, I'm sure he will.:hlogo:
