I look at team like STL as being a good fit, lots of good young players, but given some of their current struggles, they could use some veteran leadership to steer them in the right direction. NJ would be a good fit with Gionta's history, but they are already going to lose a 1st rounder because of the kovulchuk contract, so I can't see them willing to give up another 1st rounder.

I agree 100%. That was the same mistake Savard made when he traded or let Robinson, green, Ludwig and svoboda go all at once, because of the young dmen in the system. Then turned around and traded Chelios, Schneider, and Desjardins. Markov should retire a hab. The number of young dman we have is also why I wanted Robinson as an assistant coach. There was another interview with Robinson last month when he again reiterated how much he wanted to comme back to Montreal, but they weren't willing to wait until he dealt with his flood issue.

Actually, I though he did try and sign Komi, but was offered 500k less than Toronto (thankfully). With kovy, the issue was Gainey was only offering one year, while he wanted 2 years and also tried to get more money, so Gainey went and signed Gionta instead. Can't think how much better things would have been if we still had koivu and McDonough.

100% agree! Koivu also should have been allowed to retire as a hab. That is something that you would have thought would have been a no brainer for a guy like Gainey.

There is a difference. Eller is a better defensive player with good size and can be a physical presence. Issue with him on the 4th line is that we would be turning a potential 2nd line centre who can score into a Brian skrudland who can skate. DD is not as responsible defensively and will be overmatched if he has to play against other energy guys.

DD cannot be on the 4th line. He would be useless in that role. Either you bench MaxPac, or you play him. There are no "medical" reasons to sit him. Options for Eller are to play him on the wing with either pleks or DD (who he played well with earlier in the season). The reason pleks and Gionta aren't clicking is because that is a line that all three guys natural instinct is to shoot. They need a passer. I'd propose the following: Eller-pleks-bourque Maxpac-dd-Gionta Cole-galy-galy jr Prust-white-armstrong Issue is if you move Gionta away from pleks, you have to put two smurfs together - no way around it. For this reason we need to move the papa smurf from the three smurfs. With Gionta having a full NTC, and NJ losing Parise, I wonder if they would be interested. That's one team he would probably waive his NTC.

I would NEVER trade Markov - unless the sens were to offer Karlsson or something (no fringing chance!).He is a leader and there is no one with his hockey smarts. MT needs to either play Subban and Markov together, or use them smarter so that both play 25 min a night. Subban NEEDS Markov to take the pressure off him so he can take the next step. Serge Savard's downfall started when he either traded or let go Robinson, Ludwig and Green around the same time, thinking he had a lot of good young dmen in the system.

I'm all for trading gio and Moen - not because I want to tank, but because their best before date has passed and I think others have passed them. I also NEVER want to endure the possibility of seeing moen in the top 9 - let alone top 6 again.

Agreed. I think this team has enough toughness. Don't need to be a brawling team to be a tough team. If we play our game, we beat the leafs. But for whatever reason, this team just doesn't seem to get up for the leafs.

Cole's play this year is exactly why i didn't like giving him a 4 year deal. He was amazing this year and hopefully he's having another slow start. But frankly, I want to separate Cole and DD from MaxPac. Don't need them dragging him down as well right now.
