Surely his job was not as glamourous as the offensive types but he was responsible for more wins than a lot of 40 or 50 goal scorers. Being a defensive specialist is a dirty job that is not appreciated by your typical fan. Just look at all the people that would have Sunstrom traded for a bag full of broken sticks. I guess Gainey suffers the fate of all defensive specialists in that he doesn't get the recognition he deserves. But in my eyes, preventing a goal is just important as scoring one although it's not as exciting. I don't know if my eyes would fully agree with that idea but they certainly see things the same way as you with regards to the validity of retiring Gainey's number because of his all-round impact on the Canadiens in particular but also on the whole NHL as well. I don't think his number will be retired now because of his presence as the GM of the Canadiens. When he retires, then it's more likely that it will because of the above reasons and, in addition, due to his having been the GM. :hlogo::ghg::hlogo:
TheMaxDaddy
They are announcing the number's tomorrow... http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/news_story/?ID=13972...722&hubname=nhl I'll be... #19 (cuz he should already be hanging up there) #33 (cuz he's the best goalie to have ever played the game and I'm sure theirs a lot of pressure all around the league, plus they need to beat the avs to the punch) #28 (cuz he actually did more for the habs than #33 and it would be huge slap in his face to hang #33 and not #28) They are apparently gonna retire more over the next few seasons, leading up to Centennial 2009. One will be #23. I don't think he'll let them honour him this season. Won't want to jinx himself, by glorifying past success.

I think they did it in their first game after Roy retired. I might be wrong though... But I agree, I thought Roy's number should have been retired the day he retired. We need to get Roy back on the Habs good side, who knows when we'll need a new goalie coach... As for the other numbers this year, I think that Robinson and Cournoyer/Moore should be retired. Also, retire #11, even though Koivu is still playing. With what he's gone through with the cancer, and coming back, and all he's done for the city. He deserves it. Plus, I think Mario's # is retired in Pittsburgh, but he's wearing it. :ghg:

I wonder if Roy is the kind of guy who would be a good goalie coach, although I imagine we will find out soon enough. Lemieux's number was retired because he retired. I believe when he came back the penguins took down the number. Irrespective, Lemieux is one of the greatest players in the history of hockey, while koivu is a pretty good pivot who has perservered though adversity. The rules are a little different. Dalhabs
33 should be retired just to get it over with and let the Roy curse out of the city.

Are they supposed to un-retire the jersey when the player un-retires? Retire #11 when he retires, but he'd better win a cup or two first. The habs don't hang banners for winning the Presidents or Wales Trophy's. They better not hang a # the rafters w/o a cup.

I read that article and, when I got to the bottom, I noticed a feedback section. The first guy called for this guy's number to be retired: "CLAUDE LEMIEUX!! I hope they retire #32. The greatest playoff performer of all time! Truly one of the greats." I thought, at first, that he was kidding but, upon reading it over again, the spirit of the comment is truly serious. Claude Lemieux.... hmmm.... performer, yes..... retire his number..... hmmmm............................. I'll have to think on that one for a while...... maybe quite a while...... Interesting perspective. I've never thought of a 'Roy curse' on Montreal. I always thought of their dark days being a result of the consequences of the decisions of those in charge of the team and those who directly affect the team. Mark Napier
Claude Lemieux had most of his playoff heroics out of a Habs uniform so I don't think he qualifies. Wouldn't know if it would be enough to retire the # even if he wasn't traded.
shortcat1
More on Claude Lemieux. Some of the responses, in jest, aside from calling him/her nuts, add the names of: Kjell Dahlin, Ed Ronan, Steve Penney, Gilbert Dionne, Jean Jacques Daigneault, Serge Boisvert, Sergio Momesso, 'Red Light' Racicot' & John Kordic (I feel badly about this man... he got caught in a stereotype vortex). Some of the more serious but won't happen names are: Chris Nilan, Bunny Laroque, Claude Provost (he's a SERIOUS dark horse), the Mahovlich brothers, Mats Naslund, Guy Carbonneau (one day, maybe). Of these guys, Claude Provost is a legitimate candidate ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Claude_Provost ). By the way, Leafs 5, Thrashers, 0 halfways through the 3rd.
