Trade Talk

NO WAY!

Latendresse is going to be great in the NHL and Koivu is already great.

I would do this trade. Ovechkin is a rookie and arguably the best player in the world. If we get him for our aging heavy-priced captain, a risky prospect power forward with lots of potential, a good but small prospect, a good young two-way forward and a player who can only play in the playoffs... actually it osunds like a lot. But it isn't. We lose nothing that we don't already have (Latendresse with be replaced by Ovechkin not a power forward but certainly a physical one).

In reality, if we traded for Ovechkin it would cost us something like Markov, Kostitsyn, Bulis, 1st rounder. But then again, look at what Thornton got traded for.

Selänne doesn't bring what we need?!

Can I asume that you're satisfied with the scoring?

With Selänne on the team the Canadiens would be complete in the scoring department. He has chemistry with Koivu and Zednik could be demoted to the second line where he belongs. The reason why Zednik has been on the first line is that there hasn't been any options. But his talent och scoring touch makes him a second liner. That's my opinion.

But the really hard thing for the management is how to move Radek Bonk. Chris Higgins has been better and he's younger and therefore cheaper.

selanne's a small player who like to score goals.

we have: ryder, ribeiro, koivu, zednik, plekanec, perezhogin and kostitsyn in the minors

all of those players are the same type so he wouldn't our team that much better

what we need is size, gritty and players who are willing to get in front of the net and d-men who can clear the crease...and THAT, we don't have enough

as for the scoring, we don't need to beat the opponent by 5 goals for me to be satisfied

Ovechkin is unacquirable even given the names mentioned IMO. Koivu, Latendresse, Locke, Zednik & Higgins wouldn't get him. Washington knows you build around Ovechkin. If I were McPhee I wouldn't do this trade.

I only say Selanne because he's probably easier to acquire at less cost to us than others. Of course, there has been the occasional Chicago rumour. Chicago is lost and Anaheim is on the cusp as we are right now. Anaheim will have to come out of the break with a flat tire if there is to be any Selanne hope.

The question is what Burke would want in the return?

Or is it Tallon?

Will it be Chicago? Anaheim? Jokinen? Under the radar Gainey?

I'm so confused.

We'll find out soon. :P

Gainey will deliver :hlogo:

We'll all be happy :hlogo:

All those guys you mention all play for a Habs team that is near the bottom in goals for....Selanne, like Ryder, actually does score and is still pretty good at it....he's also well respected around the league, which adds another inch or two to his height....he'd also love it in Quebec, not only because he'd be playing with his fellow Finn Koivu, but also because he'll have less of a chance of getting a speeding ticket when he's racing around in one of his sports cars.........but seriously, I do agree that one of the things we need right now is a gritty Ryan Smyth-kind of player who will park himself in front of the net during PPs and be willing to take a beating.....I remember how he drove Giguere crazy (literally!) a couple of weeks ago....Ottawa uses Neil & Chara to do the same...maybe we can clone Begin so he could he could play both PK and PP.

Right on SoCalHab

Anyone remember Nagano, Salt Lake...Now? Koivu and Selanne can read each others' minds. We've seen it before. The Rangers have Rucinsky and Jagr. They burned Canada in last years World Championship and how bout them Rangers? Sykora?

Selanne at the right price - is nice!

latendresse is/and will be a streaky player

but when he's in his zone, like right now, nothing can stop him.

Not to jump all over you for this but, since when is an 18 year old consistent in anything they do?

Latendresse has had a rough time accepting being sent down when he was the best player on the team. I understand that.....but now he is streaky???? You made this generalization on what, 50 games this year? geez.

Yeah I think most Habs fans would make that deal. but I don't think Washinton will. he is their future. :hlogo: :D

I wouldn't make a deal like this if it included a percentage of the Caps ownership with it.

Don't get me wrong,I think Ovechkin is great.........this year.

For some reason I seem to see too many simularities to Kovalchuk with this guy.

Kovalchuk is a very talented player but his driving to the net and need for the puck [like his first few years] has disappeared almost completely. Aside from floating into the offensive zone and waiting for a one-timer pass where did all his determination go? Illya is a player that puts up points but he doesn't put forth the effort to be a total package [unlike his first few seasons] and that's what is needed to win championships.

I hope I'm dead wrong, but I think once a fat contract is signed he will start to follow Illya in that role.

You're right: Ovechkin reminds me of Ilya too. Except to me, Ilya is a candidate for the best player in the world.

selanne is a short term solution. I believe he is a great one but still short term.

we need that big, right handed center we all talk aboot (yes aboot, I'm feeling extra Canadian today).

We have long term skilled forwards coming out of our ass.

Yeah, I know I've been going on about Selanne. But IMO, Montreal is moving in the proper direction. But this is not a projected cup year for them. Of course, you always still try to win the cup...but, the reality is we are not there yet.

I'll be the first one to step up and smile if we get "that big, right handed center" you are referring to. But, he'd obviously have to be a high calibre player and the pickins are slim.

I guess my true wishes are to get a player of a Selanne calibre type player. That level, so to speak.

It'll be interesting to see who Gainey gets for the defence too.

he had the same kind of season last year and it's the of reputation he carries. that's why he wasn't picked in the first round last year.

bertuzzi is also a streaky player but when he's on, he can win you games by himself...just like latendresse does with drummondville.

since gainey's looking for a right handed centerman, a trade with edmonton would be possible if they toss peca in the mix. peca could be a perfect third line center.

I looked around to see what other right handed center man montreal could land

jason arnott

stu barnes

conroy

shawn bates

jeff halpern

robert land

mike peca

scatchard

stumple

york

mike johnson

travis green

hrdina.....and jim dowd !!

Id' love to see peca or scatchard...maybe halpern if the price'S not to high

I like Arnott, Peca, Scatchard, and Selanne would be nice for the end of season but dont take him for more than 20 games

Does anyone remember the year Kovalchuk was drafted? I remember hearing that Andre Savard was trying to make a pretty strong pitch for him. Anyone remember what it was, and what the clincher would have been?

I remember hearing Theo, and Koivu's names.....

Would have been nice to have made that extra push in retrospect!

It was 2 first rounders (7th overall = Komisarek, and a later one from Washington = Perezhogin) + Garon.

Atlanta wanted Theodore instead of Garon so no deal. But it almost went through, Waddell had to delay the announcement of the 1st overall pick.

I'm not sure exactly as to offered deal (no one can be for sure), but here's what I dug up:

"Forget the rumors that Waddell was hoping for a deal for Sabres goaltender Martin Biron and center Michael Peca. Forget the talk he was inviting Montreal to offer goalie Jose Theodore or asking Nashville to offer goalie Mike Dunham.

There was no real Kovalchuk Sweepstakes.

Though Waddell talked to about 11 or 12 teams and talked extensively with Buffalo, Montreal and Nashville, it would have taken something extra special to make him pass on taking Kovalchuk."
