Exactly Management shouldn't be chasing short term moves with the goal of just a playoff spot. It should be long term thinking with the goal to build a cup team. We aren't a cup team, we have a couple holes. When the goalie got hurt it was another hole. You can't plug every hole (including the goaltending) to get the team to cup calibre level in december. The issue was never about what Bergevin did or didn't do in December Its entirely what he didn't do well enough (get scoring) last summer.

The team also had the worst goaltending in the entire NHL in December. Did they have scoring issues, sure. And no one thinks they should have had a winning record for the month, but league average goaltending gives them a few more points as well. They have scoring issues but even with that, they would still be in the playoffs with league average goaltending, and they got far worse than that. You keep saying its NHLer's jobs to score goals. Well its an NHL goalies job to shut the door too. Even a team with league average goalies gets 4-5 shutouts a year. We didn't get any games with shutouts and what 1 in all of december where we limited the opponent to a single goal? I'm not asking for that every night... but league average goalies do this once in a while.

I don't expect Bergevin to throw away good pieces in pursuit of a backup goalie. that said the level of goaltending being completely inadequate must be acknowledged, and thats why I think the team only needs a couple of additions and can compete for a cup next year. the whole idea is that the goaltending has made their record look worse than it really should be for this team. And while not a contender, not as far off as the record suggests.

No doubt in my mind that .916 save percentage goaltending... just NHL average... would have us in a playoff spot. Wed have won some of the close games... and also picked up some OT points in december when we lost every game in regulation as well. Better goaltending leads to more offense as anyone who has played on a hockey team with bad goaltending knows. You can take a little more risk if you trust your goalie. Whether this team can score enough to be a cup contender is something we can debate (And I tend to think its a no unless price pulls a miracle), but this is still a playoff club if they get average netminding.

Seeing as the team's save percentage since December 1st is DEAD LAST in the NHL and not by a little bit. That might explain why the goalies get blamed.

Orr's bruins teams were very good. They weren't the greatest team the NHL has ever seen in the 1976 habs. But sure. Also being +124 on a team that is +170 is DAMN impressive.... being on the ice for over 2/3rds of the plus of the entire team... thats pretty darn good. And yeah there were weak teams in the early 70s but no one player dominated those teams in the way Orr did. But sure, keep saying he isn't the best defenseman of all time. The Bias is comical at this point.
