habscout
http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/sto...orts/columnists Good article about the maintenance of the Stanley Cup silver rings. Every 13 years, a set of previous Cup winning teams has to be removed to make room for newer championships. The decision to do so was done back in 1992, otherwise the Cup would have become too big to carry. One of the highlights is the fact that if Toronto does not win another Cup within the next 26 years, then all their current Cup winning teams will be gone! The remaining rings are on display in the Hockey Hall of Fame.

Pierre the Great
wait. So how far back does the cup go now? Why don't they just have a cup at the hockey hall of fame with every ring on it? Is this another one of Bettman's great ideas I bet it was.

It goes back a lot further then that, it was first awarded in 1892 and was known as the Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup. Now theres three at the Hockey Hall of Fame (which used to be a bank). The original is considered too fragile to present anymore and is kept in a vault, they have another one on display which is the one they award to the players. Then theres ANOTHER they have on display when the second one is on it's playoff trip.

What I meant is the on the rings that wrap the Stanley Cup that they award to the victory at the end of the playoffs. That one features about 45 years of Stanley Cup winners and rosters. jeffy
wait. So how far back does the cup go now? Why don't they just have a cup at the hockey hall of fame with every ring on it? Is this another one of Bettman's great ideas I bet it was. as much as you want to blame bettman for this one, you cant, because the decision to remove rings was made in or before 1992(when it first occured), and bettman's reign as "supreme ruler" began in 1993. As to why not make a cup at the hhof with all the rings on it, well, probably because they all the cups to look the same as the others... it would get ridiculously large. And, no one would ever get to see the oversized cup anyways, because it would be the original one, because it cant be the one that is presented to the players, and the third cup has to be identical to the players cup...
