The "CHaracter" mantra almost goes so far it has this holier than thou feel. As if they believe certain players aren't good enough people to play for them. Thats just a vibe, not saying it's definitely true. Definitely share this perception. Good post.
xXx..CK..xXx
People with huge egos can be good at their jobs. It's the same reason many narcissists end up in high positions... even presidents. It can also make them blind to their mistakes but I'm just saying even if he does have an ego, there's a chance that it doesn't mean a thing. Well, the issue comes up when the ego gets in the way of organizational success. E.g., a hockey team has a poor track record of player development. The GM responsible, rather than admit his mistakes, rewards those responsible with promotions. Or - another hypothetical - a GM keeps a coach after a disastrous season and blames the players for failing win without a goalie. Or, a GM trades a superb defencemen entering his prime for an older one exiting his prime, because he doesn't like the former's style. Or, a GM commits long-term to a forward who gave his previous organization lots of problems, while no one really believes he would have done the same had that FW come up the same way through the GM's organization. (In this case, that same player would have been blamed for his lack of character and insufficient deference to the all-knowing authority of a management team that has no idea how to develop players). And so on.
