Just read that Montreal inquired about Ilya Samsonov from Washington. Does this mean they are leaning towards Price not coming back, either by trade or LTIR? I think Samsonov is too good of a goalie to be a backup replacing a possible Allen move.

It would also increase his value.

I believe there’s a spot in somewhere management for St. Louis and he’s being appointed as intern coach until the season is done so they can transition him. For right now they fill a need for a coach without getting a new coach.

If salary is retained, it’s retained for the duration of the contract.

Retooling typically doesn't include drafting. The whole point of a retool is trades and free agency to fill the gaps in the team and adjust the lineup. When retooling, drafting can play a part, but it's not what a retool is about.

Evander Kane is in unconditional waivers with the intent of terminating his contract. Sounds like be breached the AHL covid protocols. I see where you're going with this. The problem is the retention. Retaining $22m of salary has value. Price at $5.25m has value. On the flip side, Price is 34, with a history of injuries and his best days behind him. In a world where Price is $5.25m the return isn't going to be great, a first at absolute best. The problem comes in with Montreal needing compensation for the $22m they are paying Price to play for Edmonton. Montreal wants compensation for it and without it, Price has little value. Price's value, no matter what way you swing it, is a goalie, with a history of injuries and a cap hit of $10.5m for 4 more years. The only way he is valuable right now if his next 4 year's actual salary is far cheaper than his cap hit, going to an Arizona or Ottawa to hit the cap floor without actually paying out that much money. I know I could look this up to see what it is, but I'm being lazy about this hypothetical situation. Bottom line is Price won't get traded during this season, maybe at all.

Don’t think the cap would work without retaining 50% of Price’s contract as well, so the question yikes have to ask is $5m for 4 years worth a 1st round pick by itself? I don’t believe it is. I think a more realistic trade is Allen for Koskinen and a 1st/2nd maybe a throw in prospect, while Edmonton retains salary to make it work under the cap. I’ve been thinking of Edmonton wants Chiarot as well, with a bit of retention on both ends for Chiarot and Allen, they could do; Allen + Chiarot for Koskinen + Broberg Adding filler picks to even if either way. Edmonton gets a goalie and a top-4 defenseman and gives up their best defense prospect. Montreal should go for a 1st as well but Broberg would be the prize. I don’t think Price can work under the cap.

Oilers are the best example of bad management pissing away a great opportunity. They mismanaged everything at that point, including draft picks.

I am not a fan of a 5 year rebuild, but this recipe of retooling hasn’t worked the last 20 years, so why try it again. The reality is we are in a position right now to do it right. We have some decent players signed to decent contracts that could fetch good returns. We have a couple of good prospects that should blossom to good leaders in 5 years. We are in good position to potentially land a franchise changing player in the draft. The time for a well thought out rebuild is now more than ever. I don’t want to endure another rebuild, but I will if it’s done right. Retooling isn’t working, time to do something else.

Sounds like the asking price for Jacob Chychrun is similar to what Vegas paid for Eichel. At the price point, maybe he would be worth kicking tires on for Anderson, Romanov and Carolina’s 1st?

They were saying the setup is for 8 teams, so 7 wouldn’t work as well. Rest between games and standing could be affected by a team dropping out. Plus it’s one of the top-4 teams too.

TSN is saying that if any more positives tests come from team USA, they may have to forfeit the rest tournament. If team USA is forced to forfeit, they may halt the tournament completely.

Chiarot is going to be gone before or at the deadline. I think the interesting ones are going to be the rumours of Gallagher and Toffoli. These 2 could get decent returns if moved.

The bigger part of the proposed trade is getting the 2 picks. Same AAV, plus 2 picks. Part of me thinks it's smart trade, but also thinks $5.25m Price is worth more than a 1st and a 2nd.
