dlbalr
After a two week road trip, the IceCaps (7-5-1-1) are back on home ice. That's the good news. The bad is that they match up for a pair of games against the Marlies (10-3-0) who are lighting up the AHL, scoring just under 4 goals per game. This marks a string of 19 straight games against divisional opponents. (Based on previous +/- data.) Leivo - Nylander - Panik Leipsic - Arcobello - Bailey Hyman - Carrick - Frattin Clune - Gauthier - Soshnikov Percy - Loov Martin - Valiev Brennan - Holl Bibeau Andrighetto - Hudon - Holloway Carr - McCarron - Thomas McNally - Dumont - Gregoire MacMillan - Miceli - Fournier Barberio - Ellis Bennett - Dietz Hanley - Lernout Fucale Puck drop is at 6:00 PM EST for both games. AM 930 and the ever-so-scratchy feed has the call. Note that Friday's game will be televised on RDS on tape delay; coverage there begins at 7:30 PM EST. dlbalr
Scherbak slots in on the 3rd line LW for this game. It's interesting that Dumont moves up to the 2nd line instead of Hudon shifting back to centre on that trio.
IN THE HEARTS OF MEN
said it from day 1 that Hudon would be the guy shifted to wing to make room for Delarose and big mike in the middle... Wouldn't mind seeing what Hudon McCarron holloway would look like...
Dalhabs
That Gauthier playing on the Marlies fourth line. Wasnt he supposed to be a good draftpick for the leafs? Or is he still in his teens?

Wouldn't mind seeing what Hudon McCarron holloway would look like... Hudon was back at centre by the end of the game. Dumont dropped back to the bottom six while Thomas moved up when Eisenschmid got hurt. Nice to see common sense prevail. The top two lines ended up as Andrighetto-Hudon-Holloway, Carr-McCarron-Thomas. That Gauthier playing on the Marlies fourth line. Wasnt he supposed to be a good draftpick for the leafs? Or is he still in his teens? It's his first pro season and Toronto's lineup is pretty well stacked up front. As for the game itself, St. John's blew yet another third period lead. Fortunately, they were able to win it in OT, 3-2. Hudon, Dietz, and Thomas with the goals.
DON
Fucale 1st star of game eh, nice to hear. On paper seems like was a good game, a PP goal and an OT win, cool.

Does make sense to promote Thomas and slot Hudon back rather then promote Dumont who hasn't earned the promotion just as Thomas didn't really deserve the demotion. But with us down a centre and having sherbak return.... Common sense is right but the starting line up didn't shock me at all either
DON
7 shots for Holloway & 6 for Andrighetto. Nice give and go goal for Holloway to Hudon for that one handed tip in and sweet pass off boards from Fucale (2a in 8gms) to Thomas in OT for winner. Dietz with semi-breakaway on his PP goal and he seems to be producing a bit more this year, he has 3g already and only had 4 all of last year
dlbalr
Some comments about the game: - The top defence pairing plays way, way too much. Barberio/Ellis both probably were around the 28-29 minute mark it seemed last night. - Andrighetto looked a lot more assertive with the puck. Even Thomas seemed like he was looking to shoot a lot more than I'm used to seeing. - Fucale had a strong game. He was flopping around poorly on Toronto's first goal but that's really the only complaint. Against a high scoring team like Toronto, that's pretty good. He was worthy of the first star. - McCarron was strong on the faceoffs which was good. He got caught a couple of times trying to jump to offence too early before having control of the puck. His linemates were more noticeable than him but McCarron wasn't bad either. - Holloway was hit or miss. There were a few shifts where he looked leaps and bounds above everyone else and a bunch where you didn't even know he was on the ice. - Scherbak didn't play a ton (he too was injured) but the little he did play, he failed to impress. That said, it was his first game back from injury so there was some rust most likely. His linemate, Eisenschmid (who also got hurt), was a lot more involved in the play. The two teams play again tonight. I'll update the first post with some new guesses at lines as there will be at least two lineup changes tonight. dlbalr
Two lineup changes for tonight, Miceli is in for Eisenschmid while MacMillan's in for Scherbak.
dlbalr
Some good news - the radio feed is slightly less scratchy tonight (for now at least). Still not good quality by any means but it's a bit easier to listen to at least.
dlbalr
Hudon opens up the scoring for the second straight game, 1-0 Caps early in the 1st. Holloway and Andrighetto with the assists.
dlbalr
T.J. Brennan ties it up for the Marlies.
dlbalr
Fucale coughs up a softie from the sounds of things, 2-1 Marlies. Arcobello with his second in as many nights. And as I type that, it's now 3-1 as Soshnikov wrists one past Fucale.

dlbalr
3-1 dosent look good..Pacquale coming in maybe? I thought they might have put him in but it doesn't sound like it (yet, at least).

DON
3-1 end of 1st, Leafs with 13 shots but IceCaps had 16 shots.
dlbalr
Ellis (2), McCarron, Thomas, and Holloway all scored in the 2nd. It's 6-4 St. John's after 2. That was unexpected.
dlbalr
And then Fucale falls apart in the 3rd, allowing 4. Marlies win 9-8 in OT. You read that correctly. Pasquale took the loss as Fucale was yanked after 8. McCarron had himself a game though, 2 goals and 3 assists. He's up over a point per game now. http://theahl.com/stats/game-summary.php?game_id=1014884

IN THE HEARTS OF MEN
All the clamour about what he's projected to become as nothing more then a 4th liner or no better then Brian Boyle 2.0 is a bunch of Bull S... Fact is pundits, scouts, experts, they are right usually less then half the time!!! Actually less then less then half the time! And usually become true experts after the fact. Pierre McGuire for example "always said it after the fact"! I don't think the Habs have ever had a player drafted quite like him. He is playing great hockey, more so at C then at wing and I cant ever see him going back to the wing! He also seems to play much better against men then against kids for some reason. His play on ice is nothing short of spectacular for a young rookie just turning pro who was pegged to fail from the start before he even stepped onto the ice for his first pro AHL game. All this even after impressing in preseason nhl games were he was able to find the back of the net a few times (LY and TY) as well as throwing his big frame around (remember the Lucic hit LY preseason) and dominating in the circle and being strong along the boards! He's already our #1 C, playing against the other teams top lines, taking all the hard face offs, leads our team in goals, 2nd in points... geez he's 3 points off the league lead. Sure he could regress and as Don most likely will point out as "beginners luck", or "its only 20 games" expect him to fail Mumbo jumbo.. but at this point in the season their is zero evidence of that happening as he is actually coming on stronger as he plays more games. This is huge to our team depth in the years to come.
DON
Fucale really stunk it up, but love seeing some nice offense, 5 points for McCarron and he continues to produce. Also great to see Hudon backing up his nice rookie year with solid start to season, Thomas again had a sweet shot for his goal and Ellis/Barberio/Holloway all with 3pt games. BlueKross
I think we would have taken a split with the Marlies coming in ---
dlbalr
I think we would have taken a split with the Marlies coming in --- I know I would have, 3/4 points isn't bad at all. How they lost that fourth point stings though.
