Being the home team for me, I intended to cheerabout as much as I can for a non hab team. The Demko loss is a bad one. -
2023/2024 season Playoff discussion
BCHabnut replied to Prime Minister Koivu's topic in Habs & Hockey Talk
This sums it up for me. My hate of the bruins comes from decades (minus the last ten years) of intense competition against a worthy (dirty) foe. The hate of the leafs is based only on the media and their fan base. If I was hate cheering properly, I would be hate cheering against boston, because I truly hate many players who have played for them. Including rat boy and their president Neely. And a huge list of their alumni. I don't actually hate anyone on TO. I actually like Matthews. But I still want boston, who I have reason to hate, to beat the leafs just so the media and fans can be let down. They won't shut up, but at least I can revel in their pain. -

The standings don't show it, but I think this is a better team this year than last, and I expect an improvement next season. The habs won and lost a lot of one goal games this year. While there were blowouts, they were also very competitive against good teams. They are a 1 line team right now, so I don't expect it to be quick, but the top players are all on reasonable contracts, which should mean that there will be cap space to add talent or sign players who develope within the prospect pool. -
Montreal Canadiens Select Juraj Slafkovsky

His statement every year has been that if BPA stands out as better than others, you draft him, but if there isn't a clear cut BPA, you draft by need. -
I loled.

GDT Game 67 Habs at Calgary 7pm Sat March 16
BCHabnut replied to Prime Minister Koivu's topic in Habs & Hockey Talk
This is a tough one. I think it's great that he's showing his versatility by playing pretty good on the right side, but I would prefer that he play his strong side more while he's developing. -

Matheson is so skilled but at times his decision making annoys me. He tries that one on three junk way too often in OT. Peal back and keep possession. Also on the PK, he held and tried whiplashing around the net instead of clearing it. I don't dislike him, but those type of plays can be super costly. -

Also grew up in northern BC. It has changed a great deal. Sorry about the weather talk. I'm old. To heck with tank. Let's learn how to win. Go habs go! -

This was the strangest winter in my half century -
I was just having this conversation with someone yesterday. If Suzuki can become Bergeron, Kopitar, Barkov level, he may not get 100 points in a season ever. But if his defensive game against the other teams' best players continues to develop, maybe that skill negates 25 goals against in a season, and his 75 point season results in the same goal differential. Still elite in my view.

My cousin's son Brett Leason is a good example of this. He was always slow to develope in each league that he played, but his final year in the dub, he lit it up. Was drafted mid second round by the caps. Now he is a 4th liner in Anaheim. He may ha e a career, because he's not bad away from the puck, but if you saw his last year with the raiders, you'd mistakenly project him as the next Nash. Classic example of men against boys.

Waivers Gignac on waivers, White claimed

I liked him. Can’t remember if he was overpaid, but I thought he was a solid 4th liner with ability to move up the line up. Slow though, I think. Maybe selective memory. -

Maybe he needs to play on instinct and emotion. Gets screwed up when he has to think. Just say, remember all that stuff I said about changing your game? Don't do it. Go back to what worked for you b4. Crash bang speed instinct. -

I agree right now. As long as Ghulie, Slafkovski, Caufield, Dach (please dear lord), newhook continue to develope, there is benefit to having him. But if he pushes back about hiring a tactical associate coach in a year or 2, he better create some defensive systems. -

Just too many missing pieces and players developing. Without a superstar, they will need depth. They have no depth is any position, except potential for future depth at defense. My attempt to place non injured players in positions that they're qualified for right now, rather than potential or where they currently play. 1 _______ , Suzuki 1a, Caufield 2. Slafkovski, _____1b, ________ 3. Newhook, ______ Gallagher or Anderson 4. RHP Evans Armia What is Anderson? I don't know. I wouldn't have him on a top 6. Doesn't play well with others. Pezzetta Defense 1 ________ 2 Matheson 3 _________ 4 Ghule 5 Savard, 6. Kovacevic, Harris 7. Struble, Xhekaj, Barron Goalies Monty 1a Allen 1b MSL (head coach on a good team? Doubt it. No PP or PK coach on a good team. Unsure of other coaching staff. -
This is the key. If a player is clearly better, you take BPA. Everytime.

I'd say he's far far more likely to be a mike McCarron than a Brady Tkachuk. Based on his current performance. -

I was a young boy during this time, but I played hockey. Watching my dad and my uncle's fanatic behavior about the Canadiens, I really had no choice but to jump on the bandwagon at 6 years old. -

I think the key with Xhekaj, Struble, and Harris will be to make sure that all 3 get enough ice time to develop this season. The tough decision of which one to trade, is likely coming this year. I hope Hughes gets it right. If Xhekaj is Bieksa2.0, I'd sooner keep him. But he's gonna need to stay out of the box to get that chance. -

So the thing that I worry about most is trading the wrong player. But the time is coming. Matheson, Harris, xhekaj, ghule, now struble is looking very promising, and hutson is 1 to 2 years from joining the team. That's 6 nhl calber defenseman for 3 positions on the left side. This team is weak up front. They have 1 offensive line, 1.5 offensive lines with dach and maybe newhook, and no help coming from the farm. It's obvious that the trade winds they're a blowin. Eventually a couple of these quality left d will need to be traded. If you're the gm, do you trade a dman in the summer for help up front, or do you give it another year to make sure you're keeping the best players? -
Trade Monahan Traded to Winnipeg for 2024 1st+
BCHabnut replied to Commandant's topic in Habs & Hockey Talk
2 1st round picks for some cap space and no salary retained. That is some great asset management. I reckon the 2nd half may be worse than the 1st half. Evans is a 4th line centre, not a 2nd line.
