in 2018-19 and 2019-20 he was on pace for 25 and 20 goals per 82 games. 2020-21 was worse, but arguably he suffered from his COVID infection.

Bergevin's contract will only be dealt with after the season
tomh009 replied to GHT120's topic in Habs & Hockey Talk
I honestly believe that Bergevin wants to make the team better, and not just make himself look better. And not just this year, even if he doesn't have a contract for next year. It's fine that you have an issue with this ... but I do not. 😁 -
Apparently enough of a warmup, though. That was a beauty of a seeing-eye pass to Anderson! (Assuming it was intentional, of course ...) This is the first pre-season game that bears some kind of resemblance to the regular season.

We have Allen ... but I'm less confident about Montembeault as a backup (and Allen should not be playing 80% of the games, either). If Price is away for an extended period, our chances of a playoff spot will be significantly worse. -
From the article ... If you can believe it, Kulak has only played a total of 41:19 on the penalty kill over his entire regular-season tenure with the Canadiens. And despite his skating and puck-moving ability, he’s played less than eight minutes on the power play over that same period. When Ducharme was asked why that was the case on Wednesday, the answer was somewhat hard to dispute. “I think the offence he brings is off a rush, off a broken play,” Ducharme said. “He skates well, he can jump in. That’s where he can bring some offence. “But we don’t see him as a quarterback on top of the power play.”

Wideman is definitely not a D-first defenceman, but then we already knew that before he was signed. And yet he was +0 on the night, whereas Romanov (-3) and Fairbrother (-2) bore the brunt of the Toronto scoring. I still think Wideman is credible. And if we want puck-moving D-men, we will always give up some defensive attributes when we play them.

Second-generation pro players in particular grow up in a wealthy family -- and some (but certainly not all) have unreasonable expectations of how easy it will be to become an NHL player.

Waivers Habs claim Samuel Montembeault from Florida

Not one of those goalies left in the organization today ... -
That's fine. I follow the KHL a little bit so I can supplement there.

Given that they extended a qualifying offer to Leskinen only a few months ago, I don't think the Habs have completely given up on Leskinen yet. I don't think I would put him in the same bucket as Biondi or Olofsson. He may come back yet, the way Wideman did. Of course, we can all choose the players we want to follow. 🙂

Leskinen 0g+1a, 22:12 TOI (tops on the team) in a 3-2 OT Jokerit loss to Traktor Chelyabinsk.

Armia-Evans-Gallagher -- that is a serious in-your-face third line. -
Good on the kid -- he's worked hard to get to this point, being drafted neither in the OHL or the NHL. Whether he can make it to the NHL is still a big question mark but it's not inconceivable.

Savard's defensive play so far is worse than Wideman's I think. He was -4 in the first Ottawa game and not playing at all the way I would have expected of him. But, admittedly, it's only the pre-season.
-
Exactly. He's likely to get a call-up at some point during the season due to injuries.
-
Yes ... not able to watch tonight, but I'm pleased with Wideman's game. I have a concern about Savard at the moment but it may just be pre-season. Niku only played a single period for us so far but I expect he will get a chance to prove himself yet, even if it's in the regular season. And, yes, Fairbrother and Xhekaj in Laval, please.
-
Niku did get a shot on goal on the play -- one of the relatively few the Habs got on PP. And the pinching play would have likely been OK, had Anderson stayed at the blue line, but he skated for the net after Niku had pinched.
-
I am very interested in seeing how our D perform tonight!
-
Basically the coaching approach is equivalent to "the beatings will continue until morale improves."
-
Leskinen has only played a handful of NHL games, not really enough to judge his ceiling, I think. But, while he played well in the AHL (and maybe in the KHL), Niku was pretty much an AHL superstar.
-
Leskinen has 1g+3a in eight KHL games so far, averaging over 19 minutes per game.
-
Should this be in the "Where are they now?" thread? 😄

Weber was down to six goals in 48 games, or a 10-goal pace over a full season. His offence really was down substantially, and losing five goals or so of that will not be a major impact. The silver lining is that not having Weber on the PP will remove the temptation to keep feeding pucks to him and make our PP more difficult to play against. Offensive defenceman options, in addition to Petry? Wideman, Norlinder, Niku. Will one of them play well enough to be in the top six D-men? Don't know yet. In an ideal world two of them would make the cut, and we would have Petry + 2 as offensive guys, and pair them up with Chiarot, Edmundson and Romanov for balance.
