Exactly again. When you talk about 'home' my 'home' so to speak is Southern Illinois, yet I don't claim them because thats not me. I talk a lot about my grandpa when he was 13 got tired of the dirt floors of hungary said goodbye to his mum and him and his brother walked across the border at night into Austria then eventually fled the German army during the war. My grandmother who was born in Akron, Ohio went back to Hungary before the war she was a little younger then me at the time got picked up by Stalin and his idiots and placed into a forced workers camp in Eastern Poland. Worked the mines there, saw people starve to death, finally was 'released' after it was learned she was a US Citizen after 3 years. Her sister who was born in Akron Ohio as well was caught on the wrong side of the wall and had to flee under the wall at night almost got shot. The thing was that they didn't speak english at all. They came back to Akron my grandparents met at the german church service. My uncle had to take english as a second language classes in school. And yet every day my dad and his brothers would recieve insults of people calling them nazis. And this hurts me that people would say such a thing without even knowing my family background. For years at school I was afraid to bring up my heritage because of backlash and sure enough the instant I brought it up once I was heckled for being a nazi. If anyone is anti nazism and fascism its me. Maybe thats why I'm different, I could never get along wit the white kids, never. My friends growing up were twin muslim kids (hysterically funny), a british girl, a new zealand girl, I sat with the city kids most of the time at lunch, asked a black girl out once, one of my best friends growing up was a jew, and I had the rich goofy asian friend who was great for saying the most outlandish things.

I guess I'm different. I've never seen colour as a barrier, so I never got the white pride kids at school, the segregation I see on a daily basis, the xenophobia.

I got weird looks from some of my family members when I said I visited the indi/paki store to get some Indian food. One of my best friends growing up was from India. Went to the Mexican store 2 weeks ago talked to a girl there in Spanish. When I told my cousin this he gave me weird looks. I always had a Hispanic friend. Now that I think about it I've had friends from just about every country. Is that abnormal? Apparently to my cousins it is. They think 'turban heads' are out to get them, and mexicans are in the bushes going to attack them. They call black people the n word and Chinese people the c word. When the 300 million person was born my uncle said its probably a terrorist.

Bottom line isolation brings on racism. As my mom said to me growing up don't close the blinds on the world bad things will happen.

Wow, that is quite the story about your grandparents. My goodness, I can only imagine what they went through. I've heard about the "Nazi" attitude before and it's incredibly unfair. It's like calling Iraqis terrorists when a) they had NOTHING to do with 9-11 in the first place and bush's screwed up logic that sent him there to protect the states from another 9-11, and B) they are most likely the people who've suffered the most from terrorism and the horrors of a brutal regime.

I've heard before that a lot of people with the last name "Miller" were originally Germans called "Muller / Mueller" and changed it to sound more "English" so they wouldn't get in trouble.

there's also a small town in Ontario Canada called Kitchener, but before the World Wars, it was called "New Berlin" and had a huge german population. Of course they changed the name to avoid persecution / prejudism. And then there's the story about the Japanese Canadians, who were interned during hte second world war for being suspected spies... disgusting, absolutely disgusting. ... and we teach these things at school and talk about how bad they are, but then we continue to apply racial profiling today, as if it's somehow different than it was in the 40's... Do you know Maher Arar? The canadian syrian who was taken from an airport in NY on a transit and sent to Syria for a Year and tortured into falsely confessing he was a terrorist? That guy used to pray at the same mosque as I did. His wife is a friend of mine. His kids are adorable, and he's SO NORMAL! But if you're 'different', or if you have a beard, or your name is Mohamed or Ali or Omar you're basically an automatic threat to the West and their way of life in some people's minds...

My dad is a frequent flyer, and he's very "arab looking" and has a nice little beard, and after 9-11, he was the "random" security check on every leg he flew on for at least 6 or 7 months, and that's like 60 or 70 legs becuase my dad flies so often... He was always very cooperative, and he took it with a smile, but don't tell me that's random...

My dad is the most gentle man I know too. He's like a big teddy bear; and he treats my mother and my sisters and I like royalty, and in fact so do all my sister's husbands, and they're all "stereotypical Arab men" if you just look at them and make assumptions. My sister was working at a coffee shop while she was a student, and one woman who came in regularly once asked her "You always seem so happy and you're smiling, and I can't understand it, because doesn't your father treat you badly, and doesn't he force you to wear that on your head, and hit you?" and my sister explained to her that no one beat her, or forced her to wear anything... it was amazing... but the woman was seriously just repeating what she's been fed agian and again on the news. I'm not denying that there are abusive Muslim men, but please, there are abusive non-muslim men too. It's not something you can correlate at all. When Timothy McVeigh bombed the Federal building in Oklahoma, they didn't go on and on about his religion. In fact, they didn't even mention what religion he was, and so I have no idea". but if a Muslim does something wrong right now, it's not because he as a person is wrong, it's because Islam is evil. That's the way it's treated in the media most of hte time, and it's hurtful. that's why I'm so happy this show is happening; i think it's one more way to show most people that Muslims are jsut normal people when it comes down to it.

Yup I know about the Maher Arar case.

My mothers maiden name used to be Heinz but around the turn of the century the family dropped the z and added an s. My grandparents who were born in the 20's were the first generation born with 'american' names. For example my great grandpa's name was a very common german name. There's a lot of people I knew growing up in a lutheran church that had a german name but they said it americanized. Lots of Mueller's said 'Miller's' but you can't get enough german then my name its not very common there's on 15 of us on this planet with it but I'll say my grandma's maiden name was twenhafel and my hungarian grandmother wagonbach. You can't tell me thats not german lol.

Sad thing is after world war II everyone has assimilated. I this when my hungarian grandmother dies my cultural link to the old country is gone. Nobody speaks german anymore, nothing to make us seem special anymore. I guess thats why I've always been drawn to other cultures. Its an identity, when you lose that identity you lose heritage.

Assimilation has to happen but in the process of it we as a society must not lose our cultural links because a society without culture is boring.

Integration is SOOOO Much cooler than assimilation. Then everybody takes the good from everybody, and it's not just like "you non-americans, become americans" or "you non-canadians, become canadians", know what I mean?

I know what you mean about losing the language. I'm really trying to improve my arabic, because if I don't use it, I'm sure it'll be gone and I won't be able to teach it to my kids... So I use it when I can, and I think the more languages, and the more diverse experiences you have, it's better for you, and it's not like you're just doing everyone aroudn you a favour by being "tolerant" of them, you're doing yourself a favour too, by accepting to learn from multiple sources, and realizing that wisdom comes from everywhere. otherwise, you stay so self-centred, and you become almost insulated in your thinking, and you miss all the amazing innovations out there that you refused to look at just because they weren't like you. It becomes your loss more than anyone elses.

if we all integrate then there would be no racism. (i know thats utopian but truly the best way to turn around a bigot is to do the exact opposite they preach against and show them why they are wrong)

For example my family down on the farm (southern Il) wouldn't like it if I say married someone who wasn't christian for example. The best movies I like to watch are interracial inter faith movies. Everyone around the two people in love despise each other but there's one thing that keeps the couple together: love. As they say love conquers all.

But then again my family probably wouldn't like my religious views and political views so basically I'm a rebel to begin with but the thing I struggle with is that I see this battle that cannot be won and it hurts, hurts badly.

Its also the second most clicked on show on BBC News.com

got to love the last paragraph:

"But there's been no shortage of attention for the show, including plenty from south of the border. US TV news organisations have been intrigued enough by the show's subject matter to send crews up to a neighbouring country they largely ignore."

Yeah, there was an article about it in the paper today, basically saying it's a good idea but not executed well at all. I guess like every other CBC show, they failed on this one too (stereotyping Canadians from the prairies doesn't help either, especially considering the content of the show).

Why would people get up in arms? It's a CBC show, no one will even know or care about it.

*ba dum pish*

>_>

What the heck is CBC?

then Citytv plays pornos and skinamax type shows got to love the campiness of those shows.

CityTV is my new favourite channel!

forgot to mention showcase too or sexcase

Caught the show last night.... it was okay?

Certainly has the potential to be good, but it needs some work if they hope to make it last.

Still pretty rough around the edges and it jumps around too fast(no real flow to the scenes?)

Kind of an Islamic take on 'Corner Gas' which I love.....

What about undressing with my eyes? :king:

What, me? Or the other people there?

I can't say I'd really care, as long as I didn't get a play by play. My friend (who's gay) always tells me that his gay friends think I'm hot. Which I really don't need to hear but he knows it bugs me so thats why he tells me. So anyway, I'd have to say that'd be cool then.

Like I said, no touching.

The CBC is good for one thing and thats hockey. I'd say the Olympics too but now they don't even have that.

The CBC goes for quantity over quality with a bunch of crackpot HBO rejects that no one wants to watch. I know I'm a bad Canadian for wanting to watch those hated american channels ( ) but I like quality shows, not something Mrs.Stewart's 3rd grade class whipped up in half an hour.

If you have any interest in Quality TV why are you watching the crap that the American networks put out??!!??!!
