KoZed
Got this from HTR. There's surely some mistakes since its a bit dated, but for the most part it holds up. RobRock
Danny Markov - DET - 30 - 2,500,000 Sheldon Souray - MTL - 30 - 2,432,000 Scott Hannan - SJS - 28 - 2,204,000 Eric Brewer - STL - 28 - 2,014,000 Ryan Smyth - EDM - 31 - 3,500,000 Mike Johnson - MTL - 32 - 1.900.000 Chris Drury - BUF - 30 - 3,154,000 Radek Bonk - MTL - 31 - 2,394,000 If I was in Gainey's position, that would be my shopping list this July. Markov or Hannan would replace Rivet, Brewer could be had for a minimal raise, say $2.5 million. Johnson or Bonk, one of them HAS to come back. Plekanec would fill the third line slot. Smyth just doesn't take a game off, and he won't let anyone else do it either.
ch_nl
That wishlist is looking good. But... If Souray want to leave Montreal for California or another southwest team then they should let him walk. Im not THAT interested in Eric Brewer. Scott Hannan and Danny Markov on the other hand... I doubt Smyth will ever leave Edmonton and therefore maybe Daniel Briere should be targeted instead. Mike Johnsson should be welcome back. Seems like a really nice guy and doing a great job in the silent. The same thing could be said about Bonk and if he can play like this not beeing on a contract year then I should have high priority. Other than that only Datsyuk will be the only one that will hear from 30 teams including the Habs.
jetsniper
The list seems to be missing a current Norris contender actually. Geez...whats his name... Ah! Patrice Brisebois
alexstream
my shopping list (somewhat by priority/preference order): 1. Patrick Marleau 2. Daniel Brière 3. Ryan Smyth 4. Eric Brewer 5. Brad Stuart 6. Shane Doan 7. Chris Drury 8. Scott Gomez 9. Datsyuk 10. Paul Mara 11. Handzus 12. Bertuzzi 13. Hartnell 14. Scott Hannan
smon
A not bad list coming at centre...unfortunately there will probably be few of those guys left unsigned by the free agency period. If Marleau was still out there, don't be surprised if Gainey offers him a gigantic contract.

MAK
Marleau could possibly get the "maximum" as a UFA. If Im to give the maximum to a player, let it be briere. we could use a guy like brewet or smyth but so does every team.
smon
Nah, the whole small centre dyanmic would rule out Briere getting a huge contract. Marleau is the complete package really. Although he's not worth the maximum in the technical sense since I highly doubt he could singlehandedly carry a franchise, he's still a great player. BTH
I'd love a guy like Hannan or Brewer or maybe Danny Markov. The truth is that we won't be able to afford any of these guys though.
RobRock
Brewer hasn't been the same since he left Edmonton. I think he's the most attainable defenceman on the list with any kind of upside. As I said, at most he'll get a minimal raise.
smon
Any of the three could be attainable, but it would amount to signing only of the 3 impending UFA Ds.

habanero
I think Marleau is signed through next year, but his playoff numbers are actually better than his regular season numbers. Marleau's playoff numbers last 3 years: GP G A Pts +/- 11 9 5 14 +2 17 8 4 12 0 12 6 5 11 +
TheBigRedC
I personally would go after someone like Hannan, but my first choice would be Phillips.
Zowpeb
Guys I'd look at who could fit with this team: D Preissing Hannan Brewer Salo Note: Markov should be brought back...I'd let Souray and Rivet walk in favour of guys on this list. C Handzus Datsyuk(duh) - obviously he'll command huge $$$ so it's not likely Drury Peca - could replace Bonk nicely on our 3rd line... W Nagy - I always thought Nagy was a very underrated player. I'd let Bonk, Rivet, Souray, Niinimaa(he is UFA right?) all walk. I'd re-sign our RFA's. I'd deal Aebischer and Samsonov to clear additional salary room...replace Sammy with Nagy and Aebi with Danis. Dealing them at the deadline might even help us get a pending UFA, 2nd line C, for a playoff push THIS year...win/win move. So we'd have probably about 12-14 million to spend...sign Hannan, Preissing/Salo(Salo if the $$ allow), Handzus, Nagy.

I agree there. I'd add Brad Stuart and Paul Mara to that list. Both better than Rivet, both cheaper than Souray will be. C Handzus Datsyuk(duh) - obviously he'll command huge $$$ so it's not likely Drury Peca - could replace Bonk nicely on our 3rd line... Risking it over Peca (injuries, he sucked when he first got to EDM, he plays good right now because of the GTA factor... etc) vs keeping Bonk, I'd keep Bonk... and Bonk might very well be cheaper. However, I'd take Handzus over the two. However, we already have plenty of that. If we can't keep Bonk for cheap, spare that money, give the spot(s) to plekanec, chipchura and lapierre to fight for AND sign one of the offensive bombs out there, yes you mentionned Datsyuk but there is also Marleau, Brière, Gomez W Nagy - I always thought Nagy was a very underrated player. What about Smyth and Doan??? I'd let Bonk, Rivet, Souray, Niinimaa(he is UFA right?) all walk. I'd re-sign our RFA's. I'd deal Aebischer and Samsonov to clear additional salary room...replace Sammy with Nagy and Aebi with Danis. So we'd have probably about 12-14 million to spend...sign Hannan, Preissing/Salo(Salo if the $$ allow), Handzus, Nagy. if we really have that 12-14 M to spend, I'd go after Marleau @ whatever it takes to bring him here. (6.5M?) and I'll give 5M to that Dman who will accept to come to MTL (they will all sign for 5M... a UFA Dman nowaday is worth 5M unless he is having a Sheldon Souray season, in which case he is worth McCabbe's money ->6.5-7M... *rolleyes* ) I'd go with Brewer first, if not, then Stuart. alexstream
Marleau = wishful thinking. He's signed through next season. Yup but I SWEAR he was on the UFA list Spector uses, no latter than last week. Damn I didn't even spell his name, I copied and pasted it directly from the website
smon
Yeah, I was pleasantly surprised too but I checked this wonderful team cap website (http://www3.telus.net/public/dreyes/nhl/) and found that he is signed till 2008. Oh well, he would have been quite the catch. I highly doubt he'll ever become a free agent though.
