Pierre the Great
Usually if you're making money playing sports, it's because your stats are damn good. nope, its all on 'potential'.
dark_faerie87
nope, its all on 'potential'. You're not getting what I'm saying. Let me rephrase it simply for you. A ) You said that Roddick is the greatest American failure ever. B ) Roddick is a professional tennis player. C ) Professional tennis players are professionals for a reason. D ) Professional sports players are not failures in terms of wealth and talent/skills in said sport. Therefore, if B, C and D are true, A cannot be true. Pierre the Great
He is the biggest failure in american sports history because 1. He's all hype 2. He's the face of American Tennis 3. He's never cared that he is the face of the sport here 4. He whines 5. He can't win when he's counted on its pretty much pointless to have him plastered on every commercial, every second, when he's not playing because oh he got knocked out in the first round, AGAIN. Pierre the Great
You just called him the face of American tennis right after saying he's the greatest failure in American history. I know that's why he's the greatest failure. He's the Tiger Woods except he doesn't deliver. He's a frat boy pure and simple and only cares about the bright lights and not the game. He was suppose to be the heir to Agassi and Sampras but he instead has wasted it. He's Rick Ankiel of Tennis. That's better than someone who hasn't won any. 2) And that's a bad thing how? And besides, you don't necessarily have to be the best to be the poster boy (or girl), but rather the most accessible. 3) You're making an assumption there, unless you know him personally. 4) My god, he whines? So do many, many, many other players. 5) So he's a choker. So what? Plenty of people choke, that doesn't make him the biggest failure ever. When you are the poster boy of american tennis and you are the face of the sport, you must carry it. Like a Gretzky, Tiger Woods, especially in a niche sport that is Tennis in this country. He's tabloid fodder, Britney Spears of Tennis He think's he's entitled to calls. If the umpire said the sky was blue he'd protest. Pierre the Great
not really. He's won 1 Grand Slam and that was with a home court advantage in Queens. He refuses to change his game. You can't win by just blowing by people. He must go the Phil Mickelson route and change. But he won't he refuses. He's in denial. Now he's not even the best american tennis player. Blake is. He's like Bode Miller and would just rather party.

If the umpire said the sky was blue he'd protest. Watch one of his matches he's always pissed at something You can't choke when you are the face of a sport I just checked the official tennis website and apparently he's #3 in the ATP rankings behind Federer and Nadal. I'd hardly call that "hype." Also, according to these rankings, he is the best American, so that shouldn't be a problem in regards to his poster boy status. Tabloid fodder? What does that have to do with anything? Again, lots of people whine. Gretzky whined. Crosby whines (as does Ovechkin). He can't be choking that much if he's ranked #3. not really. I'm not really sure what a Grand Slam is, but he's got 21 singles titles, which is 12 more than Blake despite being three years younger. So because he doesn't want to change makes him a failure? Not according to the ATP rankings. And according to you, the only thing that matters is stats.
Pierre the Great
Only stat non tennis fans care about are the Australian, French, Wimbledon, U.S Open. He lost in the first round in Australian this year. He won't make it out of the first in the French. Nadal was only known as a clay court specialist (French Open) but guess what? He learned how to play on concrete (Aussie, US) and grass (Wimby). Like I said he's never evolved past the I'm going to blow by you be damned. He's like John Daly in golf, he's a side show. People just come to watch to see how far he can hit a golf ball (Daley) or in Roddick's case how hard he can hit a tennis ball. He's a more of a Daly now that I think about it. Daly has won a PGA Championship and a British Open. But drinking and weight problems have turned him into a side show. He was orginially going to be the Tiger Woods. But he fell apart. That's truly Roddick to me. He's a mix of J.D Drew (was suppose to be the next Mickey Mantle), Bode Miller and John Daley.
Dutch_Habs_Fan
in sports your not judged on how good you are in money terms. Stats come first. So your probably unaware of his results, otherwise you wouldnt say such a thing. Go look it up!! Your making more and more fun of yourself...its just ridiculous what your saying about andy... Fanpuck33
I like Blake better than Roddick also, but he's not proven he is better than Roddick yet, he's still too inconsistent. Blake was ranked 4th late last season and almost dropped out of the Tennis Masters Cup by the time it rolled around, then bounced back and made it to the final. Then he won a tournament early this season, and hasn't faired so well since then, he hasn't made it past the third round in six of his 9 tournament appearances. Until clay court season started, Roddick had made it to at least the quarterfinals in every tournament he played in, aside from one where he had to retire due to injury. And you say Roddick is all about power? Blake's game is built around his overpowering forehand. He has a little more finesse to his game, but he's still a power player. And as for your emo punk comparison, it's still way off. He's totally more of a preppy white boy. I'm not really sure what a Grand Slam is, but he's got 21 singles titles, which is 12 more than Blake despite being three years younger. Grand Slam = Aussie Open, French Open, Wimbledon, and US Open, the four biggest tournaments of the year. And in Blake's defence, he matured much later than Roddick. Despite the 3 year age difference, Blake only went pro a year earlier than Roddick. He didn't win a tournament in his first 3 years, and then only 1 in the next three years. Then, in 2004, he broke his neck in practice after slipping and hitting the net pole. While he recovered, his father died of stomach cancer. To top it all off, he came down with shingles and had temporary paralysis on parts of his left side. He overcame all that to win a tournament late in 2005 and make a solid run at the US open. He followed that up by having a fantastic 2006 season, winning 6 tournaments.
Dutch_Habs_Fan
James Blake, i loved it when he had that little afro. I dont follow him closely, but i do like his technique/style. Nice to watch!! But i have to say that Roddick has a Grand Slam behind his name, and some semis/querter finals...how can he be a failure...

Fanpuck33
Because he hasn't lived up to the expectations. He was suppose to be the torch bearer for US Tennis. It's Roddick's fault that Federer came onto the scene and became perhaps the greatest of all time? It's his fault that teenage fenom Nadal has become a top player? We can't expect America to always have the best player in the world.
BTH
Even if Roddick is a failure. Calling him the greatest failure in US history is just dumb. How has he failed any worse than the average American. What have you done that he hasn't?

Dutch_Habs_Fan
Isnt he the torch carrier of the US, he's your best player right? (with ups and downs) But there are some players that are just better, evolved better...and there is nothing you can do about that. His style of play isnt good for every underground, and he's not that allrounded as Federer.

It's his fault that teenage fenom Nadal has become a top player? We can't expect America to always have the best player in the world. But you as I know that's not how niche sports in America work. Why is golf so popular? Because of Tiger Woods. Soccer needs a star still. We've never had an american hockey star but as long as its a north american player they work fine. Roddick represents US Tennis along with the Williams sisters. They have the burden to carry the sport. They have to be good and the best in order for the general public to take notice. Fanpuck33
It's unfair to blame Roddick for being 3rd best. He's an elite player. It's not his fault Federer and Nadal are so good. Federer may be the best of all time, we need to be ejoying him rather than bitching about Roddick.

Funny, cuz i was going to suggest that your the sideshow for HW.... Anyways, on topic, im looking forward to the French (as i have for the past few years) because to me it truly represents the only even matchup of the year (Nadal versus Federer on clay). This year it could be even closer with Nadal having lost on clay to Federer a couple weeks ago. Im rooting for Federer as i always do. I don't know if anyone read Rick Reilley's column in SI about Roger not long ago, but he truly seems like one of the nicest guys in sports. Plus i want to see him win the grand slam. Pierre the Great
To me the French is the best Grand Slam. Because you can't blow by people with monster serves because of the slow surface. So its more of a finesse game. Now that Federer has dethroned Nadal for the first time on clay I can't wait for the rematch. I really like Nadal he's proven himself not to be a clay court specialist. Don't see any americans going far. Roddick is allergic to clay. I can see no americans going into the second weekend.
Dutch_Habs_Fan
Yeah the french open is the best, nice long rally's and real battles on the court, thats what i like most. Who remembers Thomas Schuster, damn he never gave up. Nowadays you got Nalbandian and some more south-american's. I look forward to it!
