phrib
True .... Let's put him a collar and give the leash to Markov or Hammer
johnnyhasbeen
In a year or 3 maybe. What's the rush?
Easy Ryder
Seeing him dominate at junior level is great. Something we have not seen from our american prospects yet. But he doesn't need to be rushed yet for NHL. Next year all of our core of defense is under contract. Markov, Hammer, Komisarek have contracts for next year. Komisarek has to be locked up long term this summer or he becomes UFA at the end of next season. Bouillon has a year remaining to his contract. Gorges and O'byrne are RFA's and they will be signed. Valentenko looks ready next year he has a contract for three years. Mac and Fisher will probably be ready at the end of Hammer contract. So there is PK that we have time to develop into a project offense-defense. We do not want another Souray, a defensemen with a blast shot and poor defense. With his size and gifted talent to put points on the scoreboard he can be a new breed of player that can score playing offense, dominate the point on power play with a thunder shot and play defense if needed. A lot like Streit but with more size. We would get big offensively on the wings for the future with Pac, Lats, Conboy, Wyman and Subban. Ouch things look great!! BTH
Now we just have to play it safe and continue stacking the system with prospects as more and more of them graduate.

goalerexpert86
I saw Subban wednesday night at the Belleville Bulls game. If it's even possible his skating looks better, stickhandling looks to be improved. He's even keeping his shots from the point low. I will be attending most Bulls home games this year, so I will keep you all up to date.

I'm still wondering whether we should try to convert Subban as a winger since we have so much depth as the defense position, and also since we already have Carle and Weber who are also powerplay specialists (and I don't see them playing forward). Subban could play defense on the powerplay if necessary. With some work, Subban could perhaps become a decent power-forward type winger in the Brendan Morrow mold (without the leadership, and probably les effective offensively). He's built similarly (strong although not big), he's tenacious, extremely fast, prefers to play offense anyway, and would probably display great vision considering he's a natural defenseman. It would probably be worth a try...

But the Habs should not try to push him away from the back end until he fails or can not crack the top 6 in the next 2-3 years.

But the Habs should not try to push him away from the back end until he fails or can not crack the top 6 in the next 2-3 years. If the Canadiens were really thinking about converting him as a forward, they should do it right away. If he makes the switch immediately, including the training camp (where he can get lots of tips from our NHL coaching staff) and his last full season with the Bulls, he might actually be able to become a good winger; if we wait too long, then he would probably be a marginal forth liner, not unlike Streit and Dandeneault. Over the next 2-3 years, his competition (as things are now of course) for a spot in our top 6 will be as follows: Markov-Komisarek Hamrlik-O'Byrne McDonagh-Weber Fischer-Carle Valentenko-Gorges Paquet-Stejskal And that's assuming that Emelin and Torp will stay in Europe, that Belle isn't in our plans, and that Kischel won't cause a any upset (although I'm still trying to figure out why we made a trade so that Timmins could make that additional pick). Let's just say his chances are slim, especially since O'Byrne should secure his roster spot this season, that McDonagh is considered a blue chipper by the organization, and that Carle, Weber, and Valentenko will be ahead 1-2 years ahead of him in terms of experience at the pro level. Psycing
I'd say Subban is already ahead of Paquet...
KoZed
This isnt the old NHL. Puck-moving/rushing defensemen like Subban are a pretty hot commodity right now, even if they have some defensive issues. Brian Campbell is the best example. Having 2-3 of them in Carle/Weber/Subban might not be a bad thing. Carle might be 1, 2 years away from being a serious contender for a roster spot in Montreal and he's the closest of the group, so that gives plenty of time for roster spots to open. JoeLassister
A friend of mine, who used to post occasionally here, suggested that we might start a thread highlighting the fact that Subban has now 18 points (3-15-18) in only 14 games. That places him in a tie for the 19th spot in the whole league despite being a Dman and having played 3 less games than his team mates. Edit: maybe merge this thread with the one GE86 already started, but wasn't used in the last 30 days... sorry. Edit 2 : for those who don't know, you can watch Belleville (Subban) highlights on their website. http://www.bellevillebulls.com/ P.S. Go ahead and try to place the word Highlight 3 times in a post... Edited November 3, 2008 by JoeLassister

JoeLassister
Im really pleased with his +11 rate !! Yeah +11 is amazing so far. But I don't expect him to get this kind of stats once he'll reach AHL or NHL...
JMMR
Yeah +11 is amazing so far. But I don't expect him to get this kind of stats once he'll reach AHL or NHL... Why not. Sure he will be risky but the kid will do anything to win. Don't expect him to not care about defense. Every player likes to win BUT HE HATES TO LOSE. goalerexpert86
He's actually playing shorthanded now too. And I can't believe how well it is working. He will get the puck in his own zone and can deke out players and kill an extra 30-40 seconds before icing the puck.

Don't forget this is OHL, Alexandre Daigle could have deke anyone there too... And JMRR, I love the kid, but just don't think he will be that much of a +20 player when he reachs the pros. At least not in the 2-3 first seasons. Unless he is paired with a reeeaaal stud. Prove me wrong PK and I'll be SUPER happy !
