Boone in the Gazette

Questions to ponder:

• Do you seriously see your Montreal Canadiens as a Stanley Cup contender?

• In these troubled times, how much of your equity would you bet on them making the playoffs? Your house? Your devalued stock portfolio? $5 ... but only if you got good odds?

• WWND? What would Nilan do if opponents roughed up his most talented teamate and ran his goaltender?

• What ails Carey Price? Did he catch it from Mike Komisarek? And has it spread to Andrei Kostitsyn?

• Who is most likely to energize a troubled team, Bill Guerin or Alex Tanguay?

• Were the Canadiens who weren't traded relieved or disappointed?

• If Jaro Halak falters, can we start dreaming about John Tavares?

• On the morning after a loss and a plane trip, would you bag-skate 38-year-old Patrice Brisebois, 34-year-old cancer survivor Saku Koivu and 36-year-old Alex Kovalev?

• Is there another team in the National Hockey League that has a forward coaching the defencemen and defencemen playing forward?

• Is it true you're allowed to call timeout in hockey games?

• Is it true you're allowed to make in-game adjustments?

• If his name were not Guy Carbonneau, would he still be coaching the Montreal Canadiens?

• If his name were not Bob Gainey, would he have the best job security – outside of maybe Gary Bettman – in the NHL?

• Who'll play better on Sunday, Mike Ribeiro or Steve Bégin?

And finally: Which Montreal Canadiens will show up for the stretch srive?

Im more and more thinking that we shouldve been sellers at the deadline. Maybe some boardmembers have told Gainey that if he fails to make the playoffs he will be fired and THATS why he didnt dare to trade any players with value.

Even though I love Koivu and alot of others Im starting to think that a REAL rebuild of this team should start as soon as possible. Lapierre for captain?

I blame it all on Komisarek and Higgins.

Two guys who were supposed to be our next captains...

and who suck majorly this season.

I also agree with Boone that Jarvis is the first guy that really should be fired.

Jarvis? WTF? *He* is to blame??

Boone is a bit of a fanboy, not offering the detatchment from day-to-day ups and downs that we really need from professional commentators - but he is hardly the only member of the Montreal media guilty of this. On the whole, his is a good voice. And his overall argument is increasingly that Carbo is inept. Frankly, we can all overthink this. A team that, on paper, is close to a contender if not an outright contender systematically underperforms and can't produce a single game of consistent discipline and coherent defence? That's a team that is either badly coached, or has quit on its coach. And there is no practical difference between the two.

The other possibility is that someone is sleeping with someone's wife, something like that.

Because this isn't normal. This is a total team collapse. And these things don't happen unless there is a serious underlying problem relating either to coaching or deep internal team divisions.

Gainey has a major fix-it job to do over the summer. That much is clear.

Tons of things to blame before the coach.

  1. 100th anniversary celebrations, public appearances, specials, etc.
  2. Super high expectations (and pressure, and impatience) from fans and experts
  3. Laraque comes in as a supposed enforcer, but misses a total of 29 games before going down for the rest of the season.
  4. The kids have swollen egos, party too much and take their job lightly
  5. 10 vets are on their UFA year and are too busy playing for their own personal future to keep an eye on the kids.
  6. Streit isnt replaced on the PP, PP sinks to one of the worst in the league
  7. Tanguay misses 28 games due to injury
  8. Lang misses 32 games (remainder of the season) due to injury
  9. Koivu misses 16 games due to injury
  10. Higgins misses 19 games due to injury
  11. Komisarek misses 16 games due to injury and struggles since he came back.
  12. Latendresse misses around 20 games due to injury
  13. O'Byrne self-destroys.
  14. Other teams sees the Habs as a top team and play harder
  15. Price chooses the West Coast trip to completely self-implode
  16. Crazy sex, drugs & crime rumors
  17. Kovalev can't score, pouts, drags down Plex & Kosty with him.
  18. Koivu's decline as an offensive catalyst continues
  19. Hamrlik goes from rock solid last season to creampuff this season
  20. Sergei Kostitsyn takes the season off, doesnt warn anyone beforehand.
Blame that.

The coaching staff fails to get the best out of their players, precisely the defense totally collapses... one big suspect of that is the defense coach.

I agree with Kozed, too many injuries, too high of expectations. Last year, they were the little engine that could. This year, they were the mighty diesel that ######ing better....

I find it interesting that boston is in a deeper funk then us right now, but they are not calling for the coaches head. :)

Sometimes, a team gets down and loses confidence. It is very difficult to pull out once you are in that mindset. That doesn't mean this team won't get better, hang on, and go a few rounds in the playoffs. I doubt they are going to the final, but then, I didn't believe they would in September.

I would also add them when Gainey added BGL, that was suppose to fix our big problem from last year. No more pushing us around. Looked good at the time, but apparently BGL is too out of shape, injured, and "code bound" to do the job. I don't blame Gainey for going that route. To get top six guys with both skill and grit is very hard to do. They are as rare as top 2 D.

Agreed. For the longest time I thought I don't want to be one of those blame the coach guys. There is something wrong here. These are talented players are there all sucking. By the way, sign Komisarek now. Do you how many teams would be all over this guy?

and fortunately he has not signed any ufa's so if he wants to he can blow this up and start over although blow it up is a bit of an exageration, he has a ton of young guys wanting to get their shot. Also it should be noted that he has stated that the year is over admin speaking so he can now look at the contracts etc tht he needs to do.
