saskhab
BTW, does anybody know the details of Scott Gomez contract? I mean, somebody wrote here that the last years of his contract are cheaper than the first ones. Is it true? They are cheaper, but the cap hit is the same. It might make him more marketable as a trade asset, as teams like Nashville could theoretically come into play.

Look at the very team that played in Montreal tonight: the New York Islanders are still using Alexei Yashin's buyout to reach the salary floor. They're going to want someone like Gomez who makes less than his cap to keep up this low-payroll thing. Gomez is making 8mil this year, 7.5 next, 5.5 then 4.5. His cap hit will be 7.357 mil for each of those seasons. So any small market team will get excited. Not saying we should trade him. He's useful and we don't have a replacement. It's really not something to get concerned about. It is two years away. We have no idea what the team will be facing in two years.
Wamsley01
BTW, does anybody know the details of Scott Gomez contract? I mean, somebody wrote here that the last years of his contract are cheaper than the first ones. Is it true? Sather structured the last couple years of his deal so that it could be used as a tradeable asset. The buyout is lower and a team looking to hit the cap floor can pay 5.5M and 4.5M but have him on the books for $14.6M, saving their franchise close to $5M in the process. I used capgeek buyout calculator (http://tinyurl.com/2csn7sy) If they decide to buy him out, they would pay him $6,666,667 but put 11,380,954 against their cap hit. 2012-2013: $3,523,810 2013-2014: $4,523,810 2014-2015: $1,666,667 2015-2016: $1,666,667 This would save a team scraping the bottom $4,714,287 against their actual salary cap commitment. If the Habs bought him out after the 2012 season they would save $4M in 2013 and $3M in 2014, but have to bite an extra $1.6M over the 2015/16 seasons. Either way, his contract becomes less of an albatross after next season.

In the end, it'd be no savings at all.

In any case, Maybe Gomer will snap out of his funk and go on to have a 70 point season this year and 75 points the following year. then we won't want to trade him at all!!! ;) Edited October 28, 2010 by Habsfan
Wamsley01
Paying that much for a buyout is not an option. Think about it: on top of that, you'd have to pay for his replacement. In the end, it'd be no savings at all. I tried to project things forward and was left looking clueless for trying to predict the future. Entering 2010 if I told you that Halak is going to improve his game and Plekanec would bounce back to the point that the Canadiens would not be able to keep Plekanec, Halak and Price because the three of them who cost the Habs $5M combined would cost them over $12M to retain in 2011. To say that the savings would be nothing is not accurate if entering 2013 they need to give Price another $2M and Eller needs another $2M because he just had a 70 point campaign. So they could keep both and subtract Gomez and opt for a buyout. The best option would be to try and trade him, but I certainly wouldn't write it off as no option.
