Funny thing about OT wins and losses. The 2021 team had a ton of OT losses and people routinely use that distorted regular season record to denigrate that team, as proof they weren’t “real” contenders in the playoffs (even though 3 on 3 and SO have no connection to the playoffs whatsoever). Now the team has a ton of OT wins and that is proof the team is not a “real” almost-bubble team. Let’s make up our minds. Does OT count or not?

They all count. Regulation, OT, whatever, good teams find a way to get it done. The 1993 Habs won 10 overtime games in a row. They got it done.

Were the OT points from 2021 repeatable in 2022 and 2023?

No, they are an anomaly so counting on them again next year is a fools errand.

They might lose some of those games, they might win some in regulation and yet others might still go to OT. So, sure, the total points would likely be somewhat less, but it wouldn't be zero, either.

Yes, they count, but the issue is can they be repeated?

MIGHT is doing a lot of work here.  Like CC has, when you have too many if this happens and if that happens we can make the playoffs, you aren't likely to make the playoffs.

The reality is that we are a bottom five team in regulation wins, there is lots of work to do to improve that.  One goal games can go either way, and we see teams with great records in close games have poor records in future years and vice versa.

The goal is to be a team that can win enough games comfortably, that when you add in the close games, we have enough points to make the playoffs and we aren't there yet.

Looking at the analytics we are also not there yet in xG% to be a consistently good team.

We are getting closer, but next year seems a bridge too far without a significant acquisition this offseason.
