Habs Rookie training Camp

Good morning Ladies!

I took the day off from work today, and decided to check out the Habs rookie training camp which is being held at the Complexe 2 Glaces in Candiac (which is like 2 minutes away from my place).

I must say that seeing these "kids" up close is pretty impressive.

I thought i'd share with you what I saw out there today!

I first watched the forwards with the goalies.

The forward who impressed me the most was Fortier. He was good at every drill they had him do. Pacciorety was also impressive. This kid will be a damn good powerforward in 2-3 years.

I didn't spend much time looking at the forwards as I was more interested with the Defensemen.

They were all there except for Carle.

The d-man who impressed me the most was without a doubt Subban. This kid has a heavy slapshot, a precise wrist shot, and is probably the guy with the most raw talent out there.

McDonaugh didn't really stand out. He doesn't do anything extremely well, but does everything at a decent level. True that i didn't really get to see them in "game" situations (it was pretty much all drills today) but I get the impression that in game situations he is much more impressive.

Fisher was also good out there. He's a smooth skater and has a pretty good shot. But he still needs some time in the college ranks.

Pateryn (the guy we got for Grabovski) will definitely play in the NHL. Probably not in 1 or 2 years, but 4 years down the line, i can definitely see him in the NHL.

There was this other d-man who looked good. He's this 6'3'', 220 pound guy called Paquet. he also has a very good shot.

As far as the goalies are concerned, there were 4 of them out there.

There was Missaen, the 6'8'' giant. He is freaky!! His ass comes up to the crossbar. Not much got through him!

There was Mayer, he seemed decent, but didn't really stand out.

There was Quattrocchi (some 17 year old kid who got invited to the camp). I don'T know how he got there, cause i don't even think he's been drafted(he's too young) he obviously wasn't at the same level as the others.

The last of the 4 was probably the best of them. his name was Riopel, and he did very well.

I got to meet Trevor Timmins(he was there with his Kids) and i told him he was doing a good job.(like the guy needs to hear that from some nobody like me  ) but at least he was nice and said thanks!

Well that's it boys.

I'm off to play a round of Golf and then I have the privilege of going to the Bell Centre Tonight to see the Stone Temple Pilots concert(my favourite band).

This has got to be one of the best days I have had in a long time!

Nice report, thanks.

I was chatting with Cerebus about Mcdonagh. Lie you said he doesn't do one thing well but he is good at everything. I guess the besat comparison is he is like Hamrlik now but a much better skater, he is very physical in the college games.

Or maybe Chris Chelios...

Althought I was hoping the Habs would draft Ian Cole and Max Pacioretty last year (at least I got one right), I am very pleased with this selection; McDonagh sure looks like a high quality defenseman. It will be interesting to see how his offensive game develops now that he'll be the go to guy for the Badgers.

About Subban: I've already heard his defensive game is pretty far behind his offensive game. Has there ever been any talk of converting him to forward? It's something I always would have loved to have done with Souray, had we gotten him when he was just a bit younger.

Thanks for the great update on the Habs young guns.

Do any of these goalies look like they will be in the NHL in a few years because the only one i've ever heard of is Missaen. Never heard of that Riopel. When did we get him.

I mentionned that possibility a few times on another message board.

Considering the depth we have that position, and that from what I've heard he doesn't really care all that much about defense anyway, Subban could be a better asset at the forward position. If things go relatively well, he could perhaps become a good energy player (maybe not a pest though, he seems to likable for that :P ) and also a powerplay specialist. You merge a more skilled Steve Bégin with Mark Streit, and you might end up with something interesting in the end...

I find that many d-men don't really develop the defensive side of their game till they're around 24-26 years old. He has lots of time to work on this part of his game...I don't think they need to make that type of conversion quickly. They have a couple of years to try and get him to develop that side of his game...if it continues to lag badly at that point then they could still convert him. No need to rush. You don't want all your prospects becoming NHL ready at the same time anyhow.

Well you've heard wrong.

There is nothing wrong with his defensive game and most of the complaints comes from his draft year. Even then they weren't fair.

In the past season PK has taken great strides in his defensive responsibility (not that he was bad before) and has still been able to put up great offensive numbers while leading his team to a Memorial Cup berth.

I've always heard that the complaints about Subban's defense were misleading and that he was perfectly fine.

Nice report, thanks.

Maybe a slight mix of young Hamrlik and old Hamrlik

He's a wild stallion.

Methinks you tame him, rather than reign him in.
