markierung
There is always room for a guy like Kovalchuk. If it means trading a guy like Andrei Kost. for a pick and moving Hammer out for a pick...then so be it. The guy instantly makes the team a contender. Plex is the only guy on the team who's earned a raise so far. And I seriously doubt that Price's new contract will have a cap hit that is much higher than is current 2.something million. Burrying Laraques' contract in the minors is always a possibility too. The think of contracts coming off the books. Bergeron, Chipchurra, probably D'agostini, Paul Mara, Metro. They're all small contracts but it adds up Kovalchuk(9) Gomez (7.357) Gionta(5) Camm(6) Plex(4) Poulliot(.9) SK(.9) Laps(.9) Pacioretty(.9) Pyatt(.7) White(.7) Moen (1.5)..........37 million roughly Markov(5.75) Rookie(.9) Spacek(3.83) O'Byrne(.9) Gill(2.25) Gorges(1.1)..........15 million roughtly Price(2.5) Sanford(.5)........3 million roughly That's roughly 55 million in salary! Below the current cap (and there is no proof that the cap will go down). And this is assuming that guys like Laps and SK and Poulliot will get raises, which they probably won't. We can fit the guy in, it just means that we have to get creative Edited December 3, 2009 by markierung

markierung
And then you woke up no seriously? What's wrong with my reasoning? Is it that unlikely that Hammer and A.K. are unmovable? And if Marc Savard got 5 million, is it unreasonable that Plex is a 4 million$ player? We just have to commit to not having expensive contracts on the bottom 2 lines...which is very doable because of the strong play of White and Pyatt. And Curtis Sanford has proven to be a very capable NHL backup Also, on D, someone like Weber or Carle (or maybe PK) could be ready And maybe less realistically....with that length of Kovalchuk's shifts, there probably won't even be enough ice time to have a 4th line! (that may be wishful thinking but i'm kinda right in a sad way) Edited December 3, 2009 by markierung
Habsfan
And if Marc Savard got 5 million, is it unreasonable that Plex is a 4 million$ player? Actually, Savard's Cap hit will be 4.2 million$ Wasnt, Curtis Sanford dropped by the Habs. I don't think he's still with the organization. Which means you have to find aother back-up goalie. Also, we have to add Laraque's 1.0 million(2/3 of his salaray if you buy him out) to the cap, and a few others to whom the Habs owe money! Fanpuck33
And if Marc Savard got 5 million, is it unreasonable that Plex is a 4 million$ player? Thanks to two years at the end of the deal being less than a million each, his cap hit will actually only be around 4 million dollars. In a sane world, even with a point per game season this year, Plekanec won't top Savard's money. Plekanec's career high in points in 69, which will hoepfully be surpassed this season. Savard has been a point per game player each of the last five seasons. Sure, bring up his talented linemates, but he's doing more than riding coat tails. Plekanec still has a lot to prove. If we can get Plex to commit to 7 years at: 7 6 5 4 2 1 1 That averages out to 3.7/year for 7 years. It's more than he makes now, and very reasonable given his performance. Of course I'd wait a little before giving it to him, because if he starts playing like a girl again, it won't be so pretty. It's also very buyout-able in years 5,6 and 7 if he does turn into a HUGE plug. This is what teams have been doing, and it's worth looking into it. Montreal's got the money. saskhab
Plex is 27. I don't see him accepting making 2, 1, 1 when he's 32-34.
Fanpuck33
Plex is 27. I don't see him accepting making 2, 1, 1 when he's 32-34. Yeah, that's the type of deal a guy signs when he'll very likely be retired by the time he makes it into the low paying years of the contract. Teams just use those to artificially deflate the cap hit.
Seb
But any way you slice it, he won't make 7 and 6 in the next two seasons. This sets him up with alot of cash in the near future, and he's free just in time to sign a final 4-5 year deal in the league. Could be moved around to average out closer to 4 mil, or make it longer.
